Pickwick

An epic day at KY Lake.....below dam at Pickwick so technically KY Lake. Over 70 big Gills...8-8.5 inch fish with a girth of 9 inches! A couple of dozen Red Ears. The lure of choice...as always...a Trout Magnet. The colors were Bison and Purple Redemption. Had a fresh spool of SOS 2# test on and my drag was screaming all day! Life is good!

How do you fish the trout magnets ?

I envy you! I get over that way a couple of times a year on business. I'll have to bring a rod along next time!

I use 2# test line and crimp a size B split shot about 18 inches above the Trout Magnet. I count it down to where I think the fish are and start twitching it back to me....it is just a constant twitching of the rod tip...a cadence if you will. I also fish it under a float just like you would any jig.

I know you're asking Alphahawk, but they've been my "go to" bream bait for the last few years, so I thought I'd chime in.

I sometimes tip with bait and sometimes I don't. As a general rule, I think live bait helps a lot. Sometimes, however, I will get a lot of short strikes on a jig tipped with bait. If that's happening, I just use a plain jig.

I use a slow, steady "do nothing" retrieve (same as I use for every other jig.) My #1 color is red, and #2 is black.

I don't really find the need to tip them...but.....at certain times of the year when they go to about 30 feet on a bluff I will tip them. It just makes the Gills hold on a little longer so I can get a good hook set. Thirty feet is a long way down for a Trout Magnet.

If I was getting a kit it would be the Panfish Kit. It has colors that are better suited for catching Gills plus it comes with the longer shank Panfish jig heads.
