0,0,0,0,9 Trend Broken 05/01/2015

Attachment 201190Started the day with a rare 7 hours of unbroken sleep. Didn't expect a fish with the trend I've had, but managed 9 and I was super excited to be catching a few again.
Went to the Southern end of the Mermentau Basin near Little Prairie and fished a canal that has 2 fish as my all time best there.

The water was coming out of the marsh black but it didn't stink this time. I think that's a big plus. Anyway the fish were 24" to 18" under a cork with Popachop. Tried a couple of other canals but nothing there.

Glad you started catching. Monday is my last exam so Tuesday I will be fishing again. How was the water level and clarity of the river?

Very nice! Feels good to see a cork sink again huh! Sometimes I just put a big ol weight on there to sink it just to see what it looks like!!:Rofl Glad you didnt have to do that this time!!

Don't know about the river. I was on the East side of White Lake where a lot of the Mermentau Basin passes to the bay. Figured the rivers are still too high.

I have never gone that far south in Grand Lake. It is always too rough to cross. I want to fish the canals on the west side of white lake and south west end of grand lake.

Have you fished those canals I am talking about. They are east of little pecan south of grand lake and west of white lake. It looks like an old oil field on google. It can be accessed from grand lake just west of Cheniere du Fond.

I think that's what we called the Superior Canal. That canal crosses hwy 82 where there is a draw bridge. Used to be they would let sportsman launch at the bridge, but seems like it's closed off now. That would be a long boat ride from any of the launches on the North side. I guess Tallens would be the closest. They had closed that launch. Someone else built a launch down toward Tallens if I remember correctly. Anyway I saw a guy with a boat turn South the other day at Klondike.

I've never ventured down there as the word in my day was that they would run commercial folks out.

That is the Superiors. I wasn't sure if it was them or not. I know you use to could fish them years ago with a permit. Is Gary's Landing still open? I heard the old man died. That would be a long ride. I would need an extra tank and a calm day. As soon as my friend gets in from off shore we are going into the burns off Lake Misere straight south of Misere Bayou.. We are going to put his 10 ft bass buggy and my canoe on his party barge and drag them across the levee. I will let you know when we go.

Gary's is still open judging by the cars in the lot when I went by shortly after Streeter's opened. I hadn't heard about Russel Gary. I think of him when I go by. He would be very old by now if he was still alive. Your best bet would be to see if you can launch at Tallen's landing once called "The Boat Store". If you could then a route through Mallard Bay and Colligon's Lake is mostly protected. I used to run that route all the time. When you pop out into Grand Lake from the Old Intracoastal it's not that far to Superior canal.

We should have lot's of options soon as the Mermentau is falling fast now. Did you ever try Bayou Des Cannes? It settles down fast and years ago had some nice water.

2 of the fish today had eggs for whatever that's worth.

I can help a little on this one....those canals you see are part of Miami Corp. We always called the main canal that runs south from Grand Lake the Superior ditch. There are many canals off of it and they hold a lot of fish. You can buy a Miami permit at Gulfway in Kaplan and they give you a combination to the locked gate at the bridge off of Hwy 82 west of Pecan Island. There is a shell launch there but it is nice. I have never had any problems launching. There is a 25 Hp limit in Miami Corp. You can also launch at Talens and run through mallard bay and Collican lake and then enter the Superior ditch through the south end of Grand Lake. It is a long run and Grand Lake can beat you up really good if there is any kind of wind. Much easier to drive down to other launch. Be warned that the launch next door to Talens is sketchy at best. The holes in the road leading to it could swallow a vehicle. I haven't been there in a few years so they may have fixed it.

Saute...that area you are talking about off of Lake Misere is also part of Miami Corp. That is the area I fished as a kid with my dad. I caught my first bass over 5lb.in there!
Mr. Gary did pass away recently but the launch is still open. I was there a couple of weeks ago. GLTA...

Thanks for the info whosdat. Oh I know the back side of the burns well. We use to camp on a houseboat back in the 70's at the mouth of the canal where the camp is. Whosdat where are you from?

Dern whosdat you sure filled in some blanks on this one. I don't see where you live from your location, but you got to be fairly local to the Mermentau area. Do you get any maps with a Miami permit? My motor happens to be a 25hp. I used to see quite a few boats cut through Lake Misere to fish the Miami canals. I had to stay out though as I was commercial with a 90hp or 115. There's no shortage of places to try in South Louisiana. Does it ever get where you can't find parking down on the Superior Canal landing?

Mermentau the cut across Misere is a culvert now. They put a levee across it. Thats why we hauling paddle boats. Yea I was thinking he was from my neck of the woods too thats why I asked.

I grew up in Hathaway, which is north of Jennings and live in Milton now. I am familiar with the Mermentau and everything connected to it. I have never seen more than 3 or 4 boats at the Superior launch. A map does not come with the permit. I have used google earth to scout everything. The area off the Superior is bigger than it looks on google. An extra can of gas is not a bad idea. You can fish all day and not see another boat, so the chances of getting help if something goes wrong, is almost zero.

I know it well. I am a distant cousin to the Augustines. Went to school with all of the Kratzers and I grew up in Thornwell. I fished the Superiors way back when and I too caught my first bass in the Burns off Misere with my Dad.

OK I went back today for 15 sacs and a bass. Only one spot there that I can find the fish.
