Be nice if members could give some general information about their success on the water fishing for crappie. Such as, Lake name( if comfortable doing so) water temp [if known), presentation (live bait or jig under bobber, shooting docks, casting crankbaits,beetle spinners,jigs etc. Heading out tomorrow, probably Sodus Bay or Honeoye Lake. Will post results.

Fished Honeoye yesterday, got late start, didn't get on water till 8:30 about 40-50 boats in parking lot. NO DOCKS INSTALLED. We're a NORTHERN state that has our water covered by ice for approximately four months a year, you would think we had politicians with the intelligence to realize that a portion of their constituents actually take advantage of the outdoors. Then again the safe act and how it was passed into law, should be all the voting public needs to know.
All state docks should be in place by April 15. Date sound familiar? Give the general public some return on their taxes. Quite a few state launches have installed automatic teller machines for collection of launch fees. Well that was at least $300 in revenues lost at one lake times how many state lakes?
Well back to the fishing, very slow day. Only saw two other boats catching fish all day long. One boat put on a clinic, watched them catch 20-25 between the two of them. Throwing small plastic minnow type bait on 1/32 oz unpainted jig head,retrieved on a steady slowl retrieve. We got schooled on crappie fishing by these two guys. They totaled 42 crappie for the day. Slowed down dramatically around 11am. Fish were in 6-7 feet of water until 11am. Tried to move out and relocate school unsuccessfully.
Well there's a start to sharing your experience on the waters with others, hopefully others will follow. But I fear the number of viewers to actual respond will illustrate the difference in mindset between the northern and southern state fisherman. Even though, the southern states have many money crappie tournaments yearly.
From the launch head north along the East side, when you get 3/4 of the way up try for Crappie this time of year. I am usually there this time of yr but not leaving FL til 6/10 this yr. The Canal in Penn Yan is Fantastic this time also.

Yes, wish those southern guys would become more hospitable and less rude. Oh, did you mean New Yorkers are sarcastic and rude? Yes I understand, those New Yorkers just generalize about a whole region of the country they know nothing about and criticize those people on websites. Southern boys would never do that, being so refined. I spent two years in the army station in Fort Polk, Louisianna, and met many fellow soldiers from Texas that were extremely obnoxious about Texas this and that.(remember the Alamo ). But not everyone from Texas was as short cited as the rest, so I didn't generalized about people from Texas. As far as fishing is concerned us northern boys have to contend with the pleasure of having four distinctive seasons. Winter, spring,summer, fall. Not want to brag but us Northern guys have been known to walk on water(at least 3-4 months a year. I could go on making negative insinuations of the southern fisherman but have to much class and knowledge of southern fisherman to know their is no difference between them and the northern fisherman, they both have the good,the bad, and the ugly.
Just stating my opinion and why this board is not very active,Not intending to send you on a rant but your reaction is exactly what I was talking about.Which is along the lines of YOUR post #3.

I guess you didn't notice where I was from.As a NYer I was agreeing with you but with the speciffic traits I've noticed and NY is legendary for.I missed easily offended.
Culture across NY alone varies let alone the country.It's not bad it's not good it just is.
I've watched this board with some disapointment for 8 years.That along with the crappie fisherman I know,Who fish for crappies a week or two a year then move on to and stick with Bass or Walleyes the rest of the year brings me to the conclusion that NY is not a crappie hot spot and doesn't generate wide spread interest.
I'll move on to Bluegills myself by June because there hard to fing during the spawn let alone after.

Fished 7;45 to noon
Water temp was 58 to 65 degrees
weather was cloudy to start and then sunny--65 degrees to about 75
my brother was using live minnows and my Nephew and I were using plastics--
brother started right out with 12" crappie and caught several before we caught anything--we caught several pickerel a few large mouth and a few perch--NO blue gills at all:eek:--my brother kicker our ass today---only caught maybe 35 fish total and caught 20 of them---live minnows was the thing today--it was also windy but not bad at all --had a good time but not a lot of fish---we were fishing from 2' of water out to about 12'---most fish were in the 4 to 8' deep range----

WE crappie fished tue-thur. and did really well. fish were in 4-6 feet of water around weeds. we were fishing some of the bays off Ontario water temp was 64. jigs with minnow and jig with crappie nibble were working for us.
Back to fishing, have had success fishing Honeoye twice fishing 5-7 feet on the north east sore and north shore using 4 # test and 1/32 & 1/16 jig head with2 & 2 1/2 inch plastic curly tail smoke grub. Haven't tried live bait but see many bobber caught fish being taken by boats in my areas

Had to look up muskellunge lake, was surprised to see it was in Theresa. Believe, black lake isn't far from there. Can't wait for your report.
Anybody doing anything on Sodus Bay, might spend the weekend there Saturday chasing crappie to start but might switch over to rocky ( bass) joe's to practice for rock bass tournament. Then catch a few bass.
Muskellunge Lake 5-22 thru 5-24
Friday weather was cold, windy, rainy and it sleeted--water temp was 62 to 64 degrees and we started fishing upon arrival at about 10:45 am --fished till 4 pm--Caught mostly crappie 8.5" to 14" and caught a lot for the weather --Saturday morning it was 28 Degrees when we headed out at 7 am and we caught a lot of crappie and only a few blue gills--my brother fished live minnows and John fisher Berkley Power minnows and they whipped me and Justin pretty bad --I fished power minnows and Justin fished red white tube and caught about 4 to my 1 !!! My brother caught a lot of 12 plus and caught his record 16 1/8" weather warmed to about 52 degrees and water was 62 ---Sunday was warmer -got up to 70 and water was still 63 and Justin and I caught a LOT of crappie and I got a nice 14" and a couple 12"--we fished the same bait for the most part -we fished from 3 to 18' but mostly around 4 to 8'- I DID use crappie nibletts and the worked with anything I had on for plastic--I tried quite a few different but ended up with a power minnow and red white tube---I will post pictures tomorrow nite --we had a great time and cleaned about 100 fish per day !!!!! If you have questions I will try to answer them--
Hey Seneca, Sounds like a good weekend. I fish at my camp on Hyde Lake right down the road from where you're at. I was at Musk. years ago and we smashed them! Only one way to get on and that was at Genes... Where are you finding fish during the day? I don't like getting up to early so I have a window in the evening I know where they're at. That lake is like a bowl to say. Weeds on each end, rocks and cliffs on each side. I find them just outside the weeds in the evening but only for about an hour then gone. Are they in the middle of the lake just roaming or in the weeds.? Thoughts? I haven't been on in awhile but will post a pic or two when I get up to camp more.
We caught them all day long--we fished the edge of the weeds--My brother works for AL Blades and has been going to Genes camp for 25 years !!!!

Nice fish and great pics. When I looked up thelocation of the lake, was surprised to see how close you were to black lake and that you made the decision to fish Muskellunge instead of Black. Now I can see why. Thanks for sharing your adventure with the group. Don't know how much longer i can put off the temptation to fish for bass, but I really enjoyed the learning process of crappie fishing. And there were always a couple guys that would school us on how to fish for crappie. Luckily for us they were willing to share their knowledge with us, to insure we have more successful outing than disappointments.
Come-on guys someone must be fishing and have a report. I have been under the weather but planning on getting out soon. If I catch a 6" perch it is going to be posted to get this site going. I look everyday for new posts but has died off lately. I know other guys look forward to the posts. Not asking for your honey hole but to me is fishing when I can't get out. Thanks for the guys who have posted.
I believe the number of posts coincides with the amount of successful activity the ny fisherman have catching crappie. Having just undertaken fishing for these crappies myself, I realize that my success rate was going to be a lot higher during the spawn when the crappies were in shallow water. Now that they are suspend in schools in deeper water, they become harder to locate and fish. So, the number of people catching them drops off dramatically. Further, a number of fisherman revert to night time fishing. When the schools move up to feed around the weedlines. I myself have enjoyed learning about these fish but I will also limit my crappie fishing to pursue bass then in the fall and winter, perch and bluegills. So I probably will be posting on a crappie website less.
Fished Lamoka sunday for only the second time this year--we have been busy --bought a 31 yr old bass boat and tried it out and it worked good and we caught a LOT of fish---Cleaned 4 gallons of fish---used plastic tubes--power bait minnows and a several different tubes--fished from 7:00am to 12:30 pm--

Actually thought it looked like a boat I saw 31 years ago on Keuka lake and other waters owned by a gentleman and son that owned a Lodging site in the northeast corner of the Branchport armor Keuka. The son owned the gas station in town. Both were good people and bass fisherman. But their boat I believe was a 18 footer with 150 hp motor.

8/2 Lamoka --- warm sunny--fished from 7:30 am to noon--caught a GOOOOD bunch of crappie--fished a variety of tubes--they shut down about 11:30---cleaned about 3 1/2 to 4 gals of fish---fished about 7 feet of water just on the edge of weed beds !!!!!!!
Congratulations, New to crappie fishing, nice to see someone catching crappie in August. And only in 7 feet. Are you talking bass tubes 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches. Or are you taking the smaller tubes for crappie ( 1-1 1/2 inch.) Weight of the jig head used? 1/32, 1/16,1/8,1/4? Thanks for posting your trip. Haven't fished for crappie since mid June. Probably start crappie fishing again in September.
Also you jigging the tube jigs, suspending under a bobber?
