I have a "Snakes of KY" poster in my shop and it is different coloration and pattern than what I see there. May be an Indiana snake?
If I was to guess I would say it's a rat snake or commonly called a chicken snake. From the size and head shape I would say that guess is as good as any. I hope you let it go on about its way. They are much more beneficial than harmful (unless you are a rodent or another snake). They kill and eat lots of poisonous snakes.
Rat snake....good one to have around. Unless it surprises me and makes me jump...then they end up like the copperheads,rattlers,and congos !!

How long is that snake?
It was about 4' long. mrducks, it's a KY snake over by Marvel Estates, and yes I left it alone, no reason to kill it unless its a danger. Thanks for the info guys.
Glad to help. I seem to have a different opinion about snakes than most. I tend to side-step them and leave them alone when out in nature like deer or turkey hunting. I've had huge water snakes and even cottonmouths near my boat and just make sure they go on about their business.Quote:

I saw what I think was a 30 inch Cottonmouth sunning itself in a brush tree on Barkley yesterday morning. It was three or four feet up into the tree and then slithered down and away. Not 100% certain on what it was but I don't think water snakes get that high into those little trees/brush.
you'd be surprised! only saw a couple on the water this past week on KY Lake. We got so busy catching catfish where we usually catch big gills. My arms are sore!

If it swam away with it's head sticking out of the water & most of it's body mostly submerged ... it's likely it was just a water snake.

Water snakes out on Green, saw a nice 5 footer on a ledge and had smaller one swim by the boat yesterday.
