My buddy has a compartment that is close to freezing. He can keep them for about a week. Put in a freezer bag with just a little water and they will stay firm for several day if cold enough.
I leave them in the fridge for a couple of days and have never had an issue.
Three days no longer before I freeze. Will keep longer packed in ice even in fridge. Thing to remember is if you freeze , time does'nt start over when you thaw so don't wait too long before freeze'n.
I keep Saturdays fish in the refrigerator till Thursday all the time and have been doing it for years. I do keep them in ice water in the refrigerator. If I have not cooked by Thursday then I will freeze them.
After I get my fish clean I keep them in ice water for a day or 2 max then I put in a stainless steel strainer to keep them dry they will keep several days, my personal opinion is water is the cause of early spoilage . With this process they are easy to vaccum seal.
say i catch and clean some fish and immediately freeze them.....a couple weeks later thaw out to cook...how long will they last after being thawn out?
I've kept them in the fridge for upto 3 days before freezing. However I do change the water daily. I freeze all mine in quart freezer bags with water and most of the air purged out. I have kept them in the freezer this way for upto a year. Still make great table fare when thawed and cooked.
hysterical name...noticed 1st post. Welcome and agree with up to a year. I dry mine thoroughly a la ccollins above. Then vacuum seal for up to a year. Can't tell the diff from the ones you catch that day mixed with some that have been vacuum sealed this way for 9 mos to yr.
3 or 4 days, and you might as well fry some before you freeze them all!! I bet that stuff the stores display and sell is older. We also keep them iced down for up to 3 days before we clean them. That way on a 3 day trip, we only clean fish once.
I've kept fish iced down in a cooler over night before cleaning them. After i clean them i rinse the fillets off good and put them in the smaller glad containers with the screw on lid. I fill the container half way with fish then another quarter with water. Screw the lid on and freeze. Last a year. I usually only east fresh fish camping.
I never clean fish same day I catch them. Usually 2-3 days later. Just be sure to keep them out of the water and in ice or the meat will be soft.
Easier to fillet when they are cold and stiff.
if I catch a mess on Saturday,i will ice them down real good and clean the next morning before church.then I will rinse them good and put the bowl in the refridgerater add alittle salt(depending on the amount of fish, how much salt)let set in the fridge for 2 days, rinse once again then freeze.
usually clean fish same day, then put in bowl of salt water in frig, keep them several days that way, don't notice any difference and then freeze in water. can;t tell any difference in fish for year or two.
