Has anyone tried the commercial scents for bluegill and other panfish??? If so, what kind and what brand???LC
Crappie nibbles work great on bluegill and crappie. I usually cut them into 2 or 3 pieces so they go further. But now that I have the bait pump, I'll just be filling up a tube jig for the bluegill most likely.
Ok, thanks for the info....I have a bottle of Berkley "Gulp" maggots an was wondering how they would work....The pump sounds interesting....I would think the "spray" bait scents like Yum "crawfish" and others might work on jigs, but not sure....Might work, I don't see why not....Does anyone make their own scents????Thanks again for the info Glowgood....LC
Seabait brand night crawler. I have it in liquid and stick form. Come and take a look. We also have bloodworm, fish egg, and sandworm. I have used them to catch bass, crappie, white bass and catfish.

Come to think of it, I used to do REAL good using Uncle Mike's glo-scent in Nightcrawler flavor for bluegill and trout. I quit using it since I found out about Crappie nibbles, but I know it is good stuff too. In fact I've used several of Uncle Mike's flavors with good results. They are oily, though. Leave a sheen on the water for a while and I didn't like that.
YUM works for me. I just spray it on a cricket and get ready.
turkeyfootnc,
What "flavor" Yum do you have, I bought some shad the other day???DemoMan
Demolition
I'm pretty sure it is shad flavor. If not then it would be crawdad. It's purple, I do know that. I also know it works!
Yeah, I would like to try the "crawfish" also....Maybe I'll just play around and make my own "scents"....It's interesting to see what all goes into these scents....DemoMan
Bio Bait in crawler scent may be an option. You can purchase it from Catch-N Tackle Co.Just click on the link under my signature
I use crappie nibles with the bait pump and it has worked out well for me.
Bill
crappie nibbles have caught bream for me.
Berkley Honey worms worked well for me last season.
I'd like to know how to make my own worm and fish oils....That way I could make my own attractants....I've got two bait pumps on their way.....I was thinking of ordering about 1000 mealworms and putting them in a blender and freeze them....Has anyone ever done that.....Or would it be better to keep em alive in bran?? I've got crappie nibbles, Pro-Cure paste, and Kodiak mealworm paste....DemoMan
Yaknow, if you've got the time you might as well do some experiments. But you might want to think about cost and keep the quantitys small at first. I would blend a couple dozen mealworms first and see how they work. Man I've thought about all kinds of substances to blend and flavor a jig with, or inject into a worm or bait. I think that's how most of the products we use got started. You have to start out knowing that most of the stuff out there has already been researched and developed for quite a while. Don't mean there's no room for improvement tho!Quote:

Chartuse Nibbles Work Great Here :)
I use a small piece of Berkley Honey Worm on small fly or grub-type lure seems to increase my bite substantially.
The crappie niblets work amazing here as well. However, the fish tend to like the neon chartruese with glitter the best here. They will bite this when nothing else will. It is amazing. Bought an entire case of them.
Also, what is this bait pump I keep reading about in this thread?
Glowgood Jigster,
Yeah, I'm just experimenting and playing....I've rode around a jar of stuff I mixed up last wkend and it's made about three thousand miles to Cleveland, OH and back to Detroit, MI and back.....lol....I got my two bait pumps in this week and now I can play with em.....DemoMan
The one thing I haven't heard talked about is what scents does bluegill's prefer????Garlic, shrimp, crawfish or what????DemoMan
Demo man, there is no one scent that will work on all bluegills. They feed on different food in different lakes and in different seasons. I for the most part recycle my soft plastic bass baits that I have "used up" by cutting them into strips and leaving them in ziptop snack bags. I leave some scent in the bags (yes, bass scent) and when I am going after gills or bream I use the strips on my jig heads. It works like a charm. When you think about it they feed on the same critters just different sizes.

http://www.cbshawgsauce.com/ this is the only scent I use.
Thanks Big Mac,
I knew I've never noticed anyone saying anything other than crappie nibbles...I don't know what scent crappie nibbles is....DemoMan
Hi. I have made my own scent for several things and they worked great. One of the easiest is to mix vegitable oil with flower to get the desired "pasty" consistancy that you want. Then just add garlic, the oil from a can of tuna, and salt, yes salt. Salt gives that flavor that makes em hang on! Thats it. Works great for just about anything. I have used it for catfish, bream, bass, and crappie.

Thanks for the info....That sounds like a good recipe....DemoMan
YES but wasn't impressed with them,
BLUEGILL are sight hunters and love to attack (ON THE DROP), and (ON THE TOP)
Has anyone fished with soldier fly worms? I found hundreds in my wiggler box when I went to feed the worms!
Love em. Maggots~Soldier Fly Larvae. They can tolerate heat better than the worms and like very wet conditions. They adults look like black wasps. Black soldier fly (BSF) larvae have powerful mouth parts and digestive enzymes that enable them to "chew up", eat and derive nutrient from raw organic materials rather than requiring that the feedstock is already somewhat rotted, as is the case with earthworms. Their digestive process does produce a manure that has a higher moisture content than does that of the earthworm, great for bluegill.Quote:
