Simple....I fish for Crappie, not Bass. :biggrin
Seriously though, I used to call myself a Bass fisherman. Spent many years chasing them with great success. One day, my buddy says, "They been tearing up the slabs down at Lake Conway." So we went down there to get in on the action.....and got SKUNKED!! We spent many days on the lake after that trying to figure them out, and eventually we did. Havent been Bass fishing in quite a few years.
What C J said and I like to catch a lot. I love to feel the thump, watch the rod tip go to the water, see the float go under and last but not least unlike most bass fishermen[and I qualify that at most] I love to eat what I catch. :fish
I call myself a fisherman in general. Sometimes I will be out for crappie but I always carry a bass and cat rod in the boat too. I really don't consider myself to be just one type of fisherman although i do prefer the crappie bite more than the bass hunt.
I do it because it was what I was brought up on. I lived with my Grandparents from 5th grade to post military service ... and Crappie & White Bass fishing was what they did, with the occasional Bluegill & Bass fishing thrown in. I've carried my love for Crappie fishing along through my years as a Bass Fisherman, and still to this day will fish for species other than Crappie ... but, usually only when the Crappie fishing is slow. So, technically I'm a multi-species angler ... but, my Crappie fishing hours far exceed the time spent fishing for all other fish, which makes them my #1 priority over the last 55yrs.
The love of Crappie fishing was passed down from my Grandparents to my Mom & myself, and my Mom & late Step-father were adamant Crappie anglers. I continue the tradition, and share the catch with my Mom & my Sister & her husband ... as well as those friends of mine that share the boat with me.
As far as the table fare aspect of Crappie fishing ... I just prefer the taste of them over the other species available to me.
... cp :kewl
taste !
I am very species specific when it comes to crappie like pappy said my grandparents got me started as a young-un and i simply have never outgrown the feel of the thump and the non stop action that only crappie fishin can at times give me.....
Bad rotator cuffs
I consider myself an all around fisherman. I've fished for just about every fresh water species there is. My top 3 right now are crappie, smallmouth bass & lake trout. But that shifts in priority and species, depending on what our mood happens to be.
I dearly love crappie fishing, mainly because it deals with UL equipment and the action is pretty constant. Rarely do we get skunked on any species, but I find crappie fishing to be the most challenging right now.
I eat Crappie and Walleye, Crappie are my favorite! I Sport fish (C&R) for Bass, Striper, etc!
So I am what I mainly eat! :):):)lol
I've fished from lake of the woods to old Mexico.
My favorite way to catch crappie is wading in button willows.
I get to spend time with the granddaughters, they love crappie fishing as much a I do. They scream and carry on every time they catch one. Pa loves it when the girls have blast!!
They are delicious, a blast to chase and most of all I love to feel the thump of a big slab!:fish
Lifestyle. I was raised on crappie, country sunshine and watermelon wine. Farmboy I am.
The people you meet crappie fishing to me are more friendly. Bass fishing has gotten so competitive, and those that compete on any level have gotten down right rude. Trying to run people out of the spot they want to fish because they need that spot because they are fishing for money. I have heard that statement said several times. To me that gives the sport of bass fishing a bad name. I am not saying all bass fishermen are that way but I have ran into quite a few that are. Crappie are a great tasting hard fighting little fish. They are a worthy quarry also, but get your technique the way they want it and you have a nice mess of fish.
Because I got more money tied up in crappie fisin than bass fishin. DP
I grew up on a pond teaming wih bass. I can still to this day go out and catch them until my arms fall off. When I got a boat I happened on a school of crappie and caught my limit. The next weekend I brought a friend to that spot and we didn't catch one. We searched all day until finally in the last hour found them in some standing timber and caught them until dark. I find them a challenge to find and catch and love that they school up and are not "lone wolves" like the big bass are. Also agree there is something about that thump and dead weight that get me everytime. Just yesterday I said that to my buddy on the boat as I was reeling in a dink. It doesn't matter the size its that subtle thump that excites me like a little kid. Also I do catch a lot of bass while crappie fishing. Got this one yesterday right along side the crappie.

Crappie are very thinicky eaters! But what one likes usualy most like, so its like putting together a puzzle trying to figure out what works for that day and that body of water. They are a challenge to figure out but once you do they jump in the boat!
A bass is very aggressive and will eat anything. Crap throw the biggest ugliest bait you can find and catch a bass no problem.. Anyone can catch a bass lmbo!!!! I do love to bass fish.......when I'm feeling lazy! :biggrin
I fish for crappie most of the time. But I will fish for anything. If your catching carp good I'll go with you and catch carp. If they'll pull my string I'll do my thing.
Raised on crappie fishing!
I have a habitual addition I am hooked on crappie fishing. Thats all I want to do when I get a chance is go crappie fishing, eat crappie, learn more about crappie and how to catch more, and talk about crappie. Be careful as this crappie fishing addition can be contagious if you get around it very long. I can't go today and it is raining outside I hope I don't have withdrawal symptoms. :Rofl
Get in my belly....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
I fish for what ever I catch, which usually isn't much
i love the taste, and it is a laid back way to fish. less stress!! leave my troubles on the bank!!
I used to bass fish. Tired of catch and release. Now they get released to the grease. Started crappie fishing and haven't looked back. I've got around 5k in bass tackle and rods setting in the shop that hasn't been touched in 3yrs.
because i love staying hung up all the time...
I fish crappies because they can be easily caught on artificial baits and no live bait is needed. Also they provide fast action and are fun to catch on lite equipment.
I love crappies. And crappie people seem a whole lot nicer than the green carp folks. Crappie people will share info crappie folks don't care if you roll up on them just to say hey , Bass folks are a bit to snooty and uptight for me. It's like commando fishing. Not to say all bassers are that way just most I've run into. Bass don't have much flavor either Crappies are king
Mine is a bit different story than some. My first fishing trip was with a cane pole and doughballs. I was 4 years old and I have followed it as best I could ever since. A move to the south changed the way I did things and bass fishing became popular along the way. Being young and liking the challenge of a new pursuit I fell into it hard. Years past and the thought of fishing all day for 5 bites and the inactive times causing me to be off guard for 2 or 3 of those left me frustrated. I started to downsize everything and the catch rate went up, and light tackle became the norm for me. Then I moved to Tennessee. I had to buy my fish at the grocery. One of the first good size fish I caught here was a Crappie over a pound and a half. I was instantly addicted. I tend to follow my passions hard and this is no different. I spend a lot of time alone in my job and enjoy the folks I have met chasing these fish. I have friends that have made and never met, and the thought of making one of the events and meeting lots of them just charges my batteries. I have met several folks in shops across the country that I knew from this site, even met one today. I also like to help folks enjoy the fishing and help them shorten the learning curve. Folks took the time to do this for me once and I just can't sit on the knowledge I have gathered. Knowledge unshared has little value. So this is so much more than the fish for me. I don't believe I will ever leave this sport in the rear view mirror as I have some other things in my past. I'm a changed man from the time before I got that first big Tennessee Crappie. The sharing nature of everyone I meet, here, in the shops, or on the water always keep me coming back.
I fished a lot for bass when I was younger. Then I saw jug fishing for catfish on TV and thought that would be fun and it was. I also trolled for hybrids/stripers in late winter and early spring, so I had rod holders and planer boards. I was out jug fishing one day on the lake during the summer and a guy who was trolling for crappie caught a catfish and gave it to me. I asked him how he was doing and he told me he had caught 8 so far that morning. I saw him again at the boat ramp at noon and he ended up with 12 crappie for the morning using two poles trolling crank baits. I told my son I thought we could do that with our set up. We tried it a couple of weeks later and caught several crappie, and I have been trolling for them ever since. I had to buy a new tackle box to hold all of the crank baits I bought over the next year.
The only reason I fish for crappies is that walleye season is closed.
My Great Uncle got me started on speck fishing about 20 years ago. There's nothing like trolling around and seeing that cork go under, seeing the bend in the rod or feeling that thump. Plus, there are variety of ways to do this type of fishing. Not to put down any other fishing cause all fishing is good BUT who wants to cast, wind, cast, wind, cast, wind, cast, wind, cast, wind, cast, wind, cast, wind, cast, wind, cast, wind, cast, wind all day long??
I grew up catching pan fish crappie being my favorite. Love the thump and watching the bobber go down.Help the crappie population eat more bass.
I love all types of fishing. There is something about that spec thump and that cork slowly going down. To me the easiest fish to filet and cook. I just don't enjoy bass fishing any more, tournaments and the personality of those fishing for bass have turned me off to it. I have been blessed to catch many lurker bass through the years and have a 14 pound 7 ounce on the wall that I probably will never beat. So the only time I primarily bass fish is taking youth or for fellowship with friends. I have been bream fishing a lot the last month and brought two bass rods and soft plastics to the lake each trip. Each trip I tried I got my 5 fish limit of bass to filet, but the last two trips I didn't feel the challenge to even pull bass rods from the rod box.
I am within an hour of the Gulf of Mexico and probably my favorite fishing has become the saltwater flats. Speckled trout are the crappie of the oceans. They have the same soft mouth that you have to be careful not hoss. Trout also open that big yellow mouth and shake on top similar to crappie. Though, there sinking of a golf ball size cork is much more violent than that of a crappie sucking in a minnow. Then redfish are the bass of saltwater with so much more power and running of the drag. I also love the taste of saltwater fish too.
Another love is striper and hybrid fishing with artificials. These guys are so strong. Largemouth are wimps compared to hybrids. I love the way they slam a bait and immediately sing your drag. You always have to have a good grip on your rod or you can lose it at anytime. They can be very challenging to pattern too. Even better is striper said and hybrids are the best eating fish once you learn the proper ways to prepare them. Once you get all the red flesh off its the prettiest white meat around. They are a lot more work to clean than most, but the texture of that meat can be blackened, smoked, grilled, baked, sautéed, and also fry tasty with Zattirans lemon pepper seasoning.
Lastly, I look forward to the fish that started all for me the bream. I love to pitch crickets or a beetle spin type bait for huge gills. A pound plus bluegill on a ultralight or light action combo just fires me up. I love to hear them popping unsuspecting bugs from the surface like shotguns going off. Due to our very humid, hot summers I can usually find them near shade, instead of open water. To top it all off they bed in enormous groups. Which makes it ideal for putting smiles on young anglers faces and to me that's more rewarding than all the catches I have ever made.
Sorry to make a long read and may be off topic, but my passion for fishing runs thick. I love all species, but mostly showing others the outdoors and Gods most perfect gifts to us.
I grew up night fishing with my dad and granddad it's just something that stays with you.I also think it's something you can do with the whole family and you can't beat the thump or the fish frys
There's just something about it. Some of my favorite memories as a kid are the weekends in mid to late April my aunt would have us down at her place on Lake of the Ozarks to catch crappie off the beds in front of her dock. I've loved catching them ever since. They're great table fare. Plus, if I catch 30 small crappie I'm thrilled- that's a big enough mess for anyone's table. If a bass fisherman catches 30 small bass, he's had a bad day because he hasn't caught a big one. I also think it attracts friendlier fishermen. It's just good clean fun all around.
