Dead Sea
even saw a new york tag :yikes
I'm leaving tomo to get down there, oh well flock it at least I'm not at work and I'll be relaxing.
Some of us have been predicting the dead sea thing for Sardis. Well' the sky finally fell. Been fishing this lake 40 years and have never seen it this bad as far as numbers of fish. The fish are not there at all! Hope I live long enough to see it come back. There has to be a better answer than allowing this type thing to happen. Enid and Grenada are a little better this year, but not much. I saw the New York tag as well.
Went to a lake today and my truck was the only one in the lot from Ms. Every other truck was from Il.
Lol awesome can't wait to get down there and be disappointed
They biting at Butla! Probably your best bet!
There aren't any fish left in Butla . Keep moving.
I've been bitching and warning that this was coming for several years. Anyone who has fished these lakes for any amount of time should have seen this coming.
Everyone gets online and brags about what they catch, cell phones on the lake calling everyone you know and alerting where the bite is.
#1 TROLLING IS THE DEVIL.
That's all folks.
This will only last until it starts getting hot then the spawners will high tail it to the air conditioning and we can continue on whacking and stacking in peace until ski flea season.

This weather blows, every time I pull up weather forecast the weather changes for Sardis
Some lakes are treated like a never ending resource and that is just not the case .
I think I heard that once before lol
This is exactly whats has happen to this website if your not part of the majority then your a outcast and get slammed for saying something that the majority doesn't agree with. This use to be a fun website but it has started to lose something. And FYI i do it all singlepole, troll and pull crankbaits and trolling and pulling crankbaits is the eaisest way and most productive way to catch fish
Pretty simple. Limit used to be 40 fish, then the pontoons showed up with 50 poles out. Limit drops to 30, then pics start showing up bragging on the internet, limit drops to 20, now it's 15. Hell I hardly ever keep more than 10 anymore. They're aren't anymore people fishing spawn than before, it's the prespawn trolling that's killing these lakes. The sooner yall get that through your head the better. If you want to troll after spawn I'm all for it, but prespawn has to stop.
It'll stop before long anyway cause there won't be any fish left.
I don't think you will see any trollers whack and stack anything but gas bills going and coming with empty coolers. The fish are not there. it is bad enough right now, they should close the place down for a couple years and allow it to recover. I am a single pole man, I understand people like to troll and if that is your bag, then so be it. I do believe that some regulation has to be put in place or we are all stuck with what we have now. NOTHING
My boat won't run north of the Mason-Dixon Line:biggrin
I don't normally get into these kinds of conversations but going to make a exception to my rule. I'm not quite following you on this one. So you are saying I shouldn't go fishing until the Spawn then when the Spawn starts I can go catch all the Spawners I want up to my limit as long as I single pole but a limit trolling is out of the question. Really don't follow that logic but I am getting up in age.
A tad over simplified. Are you familiar with Sardis?
Reason I ask is 10 years ago there were zero people trolling prespawn at Sardis. The crappie there will usually stack up just ahead of where the river gets out of its banks in about 6-10 foot of water. All out in the open and not related to structure. You could might go out and catch a few jigging but not likely. Now it's boat after boat , I mean several hundred boats out there catching those fish before they move into the shallows to spawn. Very few people fished from say November to mid February. Now people troll year around and the lake can't sustain that forever. In a little over 20 years the limit has dropped from 40 to 15, and I'm fine with that. 10 might be better. I think there should be a troll free season from Jan 1 to May 1. This lake has steadily declined over the last 10 years and the only thing different is more pressure from trolling. When the parking lot at the dam and Holiday are full in February it's not good for the fish.
I still catch all I want spring, summer, and fall. I'm not saying this because I want the fish to myself, I just want the fish to be there when I retire. Problem will fix itself in a couple more years if MDWF doesn't do something. There will be so few fish people will go elsewhere. Grenada is getting bombarded now and watch what happens to it in less than 10 years.
I hate government control of anything or tell someone how they can or can't fish, but I'm witnessing the decline of the lake I learned how to fish on. To me trolling has become more of gathering fish than fishing fish. Why not allow people to run nets too.
I know trollers won't agree and that's fine, but you'll understand shortly. If you've fished Sardis more than 20 years constant and don't see this happening I don't know what else to say.
No hard feelings either way.
:popcorn
Caught 2 today. 1 yesterday. 6 Saturday. 5 Thursday. The other times had 3 or less.
I've been trolling Sardis for about 40 years, back when the limit was 50 and no size limit, or number of hooks per pole or number of poles. The fishery sustained itself all those years. We've had good years, bad years, and average years. The one thing that has changed is the pressure. More pressure now for sure, but the other restrictions have balanced out the pressure to a big extent. Sardis has always had lots of pressure in the pre spawn tho, and I mean for Decades. I've fished with 5 hooks per pole with 3 guys in a boat and caught a 150 fish limit in 2-3 hours, and most were pre spawn, and saw 100 boats doing the same thing back in the day with 10"ers. being the bulk of the fish.
A few years back, you might catch 100 fish a day pulling cranks, with only 5-10 keepers. The past few years have been boom years, but the bad spawns a few years back have done its damage and we're seeing that now. The problem is the lack of short fish. It's going to be slim pickings for a few years but it isn't because of pre spawn trolling or pressure. It's a natural cycle.
Less fish, less pressure. High water in the timber, better spawn. Better spawn, more fish in a few years. More fish in a few years, more pressure. NOT JUST FROM TROLLERS, but from Everybody, catching them in Every way.
This could be debated all day long. Various factors influencing the population of fish. Bottom line as I see it is that you have way more fishermen, fishing year around, way more technology, way more people "know" how to catch them with all the fancy technology, the lakes don't sustain high water during spawn as they did years ago, there's a fraction of trees and buck brush left in the lakes for fish to "hide". Trollers pretty much fish the entire lake now. 20 years ago, it was all down by the damns or middle part of the lakes and summer only. The only thing saving the fish is wind and bad weather. crappie.com, crappie tournaments, commercialism, social media has done nothing but put more pressure on crappie fishing. Anyone that doesn't want to accept this is just being naive. I really think, it will eventually end up being "trolling" seasons. How they manage and control it might be anoher opportunity. What style fishing you do doesn't make me like you any less than the next guy. I do know this. For about 30 years, I've been thinking how great it will be to retire and fish Sardis catching slabs. Now, I'm thinking I need to start looking at other lakes. And that is sad to me, considering my dad raised me fishing Sardis and I have so many great memories of he and I together fishing and camping out. And what my kids might miss that I had an opportunity to enjoy. We're all out trying to enjoy nature and have a good time. Respectfully my thoughts on this.
Attachment 198700I'm down here now, report or no report it's better than being at work and a break from reality and the drama stl mo has to offer. Lil hairy in the ol tent last night during the storm but all good.
I can remember back in those days when the lake was full of timber and I mostly bass fished. You could not fish in the timber for the Yo-Yo's. Every piece of standing timber had 2 or 3 boards nailed to it with 2 Yo-Yo's on ever board. Hundreds of them. People taking fish out of there by the tub full plus all the people who pole fished and trolled. And like you said all the poles and hooks you could deal with. Yes we are putting a lot of pressure on the lakes but I truly believe our resource managers know what they are doing and I don't believe with the limits and enforcement we have today, that we are doing much more damage than was done 20/30 years ago. We are truly a blessed bunch of fishermen to have the resources we have and that they are managed as well as they are.
The arguments are the same, they never change. The only thing that has changed is Sardis is the Dead Sea right now and will be next year. Grenada and Enid are not much better and they are getting hammered because of the lack of fish at Sardis. I have been fishing Sardis exclusively for over 40 years. I am heading somewhere else to learn to Crappie fish on the waterway or Pickwick or somewhere. The big 4 is toast for a while, but be my guest all of you confident trollers or crankbait pullers, knock yourself out.
With technology getting better every day. Everything is in danger of change. It is not only the tech. like sonar, better fishing equipment, google earth, and social media on fish. Deer and other game are under the same pressure with tech. like camera's, better camouflage and just better equipment. Even the new technology has endangered peoples jobs with robots. But even back in the old days when people thought that some new thing or gadget would be the end of the world. Some how "Mother Nature" knew how and managed to change things to keep on keepin on. Please don't put anyone down for the way they fish or hunt because that is one of PETA's strong points, is to divide and conquer. Back when I was a young boy I went squirrel hunting with my grandpa. He only took 5 shells at a time with him and I never seen him kill but 3 squirrels at a time when we went. So I asked him why he would never take more shells and kill more and this is what he said" If I kill more than I can eat your Grandma would not let me go back till I eat what I have killed, so I just get what we will eat at one time so you and I can go back hunting tomorrow" and the woods where we went back then still has squirrels. The way to help our fish and game is to start with myself and only take what I need(not how many I won't) and release what I don't "Mother Nature" will take care of the rest.:twocents
Agreed scrat! Internet scouting and posting pictures of a good day to social media will lead to our own detriment. The word about where the fish are biting spreads much faster these days and one post to Facebook reaches far more people than word of mouth ever could. I see the same problems when duck hunting public ground. Twenty trucks at a public WMA changes to 150 trucks overnight when success gets reported.
There is nothing wrong with saying there is a little action going on at a certain lake. Most folks don't want specifics. I want everybody to catch some and enjoy this fine sport
The only dead sea we've had was Butla and was from one season of extremely low water. The issue isn't the amount of fish in enid and sardis--it's where and how you fish for them at any given time that makes the difference on these lakes.
Now if I could just figure out the where and how I'd be alright;)
