5 foot 3/8 chain on a 50 foot rope. more rope you let out the slower you go. I have one for each side of the boat to keep going straight. Hope this helps.
Yep....they told you right
Where is best place to buy a 3/8 chain? I don't think they have one that big at Lowes or Home Depot.
I don't mean to hijack this thread, but could someone explain how to do this? Is chain dragging on bottom of lake? What about getting hung up?
Yep I got mine at Lowes. It's the biggest link chain they carry.
Sometimes they will hang up but most of the time they slip thru sure not going to hang up like a drift sock. The more rope you let out the slower you will go.
Try Harbor Freight if you have one. I bought a 3/8" 14ft with the hooks on each end for $19.97 on sale several months ago.
how much structure do you tear up dragging chains? or do you?
Where is CanePole? DP
Seems like you could destroy some nice brush piles dragging a chain ... Just Sayin'
The only time I plan on using the chains is when I'm drifting flats to cover water. Fishing brush I'll put the nose of the boat into the wind and use the trolling motor like I always have while vertical jigging. I can truthfully say I've never anchored to fish a brush pile and I doubt I'll start now.
Don't tell me chains tear up structure. I have had a lot of lay downs totally destroyed by chains. Jeff White and I scanned some destroyed brush with HB SI. Stay away from me with chains. There is not that much cover left here at KY lake and no need in destroying it. Go to Reelfoot or put out your own crap and tear it up.

The chain lays flat on the bottom. Make sure when you let it out there are no knots in it. It will slither through structure like a snake. I have used a chain for years and been hung up maybe twice. If there is proof that the chain is what tore up structure then I will start being even more careful. I use one piece of chain 9 ft long out the middle of the transom. With the chain out the middle and the trolling motor on middle front that's all you need to stay straight.
Lowes is proud of their 3/8 chain, $3.75 per foot. 6ft is $24 with tax.
Green carp fishermen with braided line tear up a lot of brush piles in my neck of the woods.
