Looking for a good set of tires for our boat trailer. Right now it has carlise tires on it that are two years old. We've had trouble with irregular wear and belts breaking. I've already replace one of em with the spare cause it was so bad. The trailer tracks straight and the thrust angle is good. Does anyone run radial tires on their trailers? I just wanna get the best tires for the money.
Its a single axle trailer with a war eagle 2072 aluminum boat.
I've had the best luck outta Carlisle Trail Rh tires.
Boat trailer came with Goodyear Marathons on it had 3 blow out in a year. switched to Carlisle in 2008 no problems since
Most are foreign made today. That said most are pretty good tires. Goodyear Marathon were bad for awhile that is all supposed to be behind them. Kumho or how ever you speel it are good tires. Most will be D rated. Just buy a decent Radial made for trailer use and keep aired up between 45 to 50 PSI. No they do not need to be aired to the max on sidewall if over 50. That max on some of those tires is for a max load on any kinda of trailer, which in most cases your not going to be at.
Irregular wear is probably not a tire issue. Bent axle, bent spindle, loose bearings or an overloaded trailer are all common causes of uneven tire wear.

My boat is a 16' fiberglass w/90hp outboard ... and has a dry weight of nearly 1800lbs. These radials require 65psi for that weight & highway speeds. I purchased them online & had them shipped to my home for around $160 (2 tires).
They replaced the small truck tires that the original owner of the boat had on there .... after I had a blowout on the highway.

I had to replace my original no name tires last year as the outside tread wore down to the cords, when I jacked it up to take them off I found the bearings were not loaded correctly, So I took them out cleaned repacked and set them correctly . I put Carlisles on it, had them on my duck boat for 8 yrs no issues and lots of miles. I'll let you know if the new set fails this year

I run cheapo passenger car radial tires. Never had any kind of problem.
I run Carlisle radials balanced on my trailer, the key is to keep the tires infladed to max on sidewall, mine call for 55psi and run 70 mph all day and stay very cool. These tires are made for trailers and have a firm side wall to prevent sway and overheating.
If you are going to put many miles on them pulling it down the interstate then don't use bias ply tires, they don't seem to take the heat generated at higher speeds. At least mine didn't and they were new Carlisle 4 ply bias, I went through 3 new ones in less than 6 months chunks of the tread would come off. I have 2 fiberglass bass boats and put about 1,000 miles a month on them mainly pulling them on the interstate around 75mph. Put new radial trailer tires on them and haven't had 1 problem since last May. Southern Tire Mart is where I bought them they had a great deal on them, believe it or not I think I only paid around $50 each.:twocents
Virtually every trailer tire out there in a 14" is only rated to 65MPH and barely has the load capacity for a glass boat on a single axle trailer. Going faster than 65 means you have to de-rate the load capacity even more.Quote:

C1BigoCarp had issues with the Good Year Marathon tires and replaced them more often than they should have been. I went to the co-op figuring that they deal with trailers a lot and picked up a pair for my glass bass boat for $130 with all the bells and whistles. That was 2 yrs ago and doing good.
x2 what caftan said about bent axle or spendles. I put three sets of tires on a rig within 3 years and finally discovered the axle problem.
I trailer long distances, and have gone to D or E rated tires. Are bulletproof, compared to C rated tires. Will never go back, except maybe for the Jon, which weighs maybe 400 lbs
With a limited budget, I think Roadstar B78-13 Trailer Tires is perfect for me. It is already mounted on rims, making it cheaper than buying tires alone. Beside, ease of assembly is one thing I love about these tires.
even a light boat on small bias tires is probably going to eat up tires quickly if you drag it long ways and fast on a regular basis ,no matter how well packed the wheel bearings are and how well they are balanced ,those smaller bias tires are not made for the long haul program .
