Howdy fellows. I'm trying to decide between the gen2 an gen3 Lowrance. Don't know if the 3 is worth the extra money. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Also touch screen, good or bad?

Howdy fellows. I'm trying to decide between the gen2 an gen3 Lowrance. Don't know if the 3 is worth the extra money. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Also touch screen, good or bad?
I'd like to know too. I'm planning on buying a gen2 7 touch tomorrow
I am gonna go ahead and get the Gen3, might as well get the most current thing out there. The Gen 2 touch are already being phased out and the Gen3 can be controlled by the touch screen or key pad.
I decided to go with the GEN2 Touch9 units. I didn't feel that the wifi connectivity and the chirp sonar was worth the extra money compared to the GEN2. I'm upgrading from 2 HDS7 non touch units so the touch9s were a big step up for me.
I don't think there's any wrong answer. Get the unit that fits your needs and budget.
High points of the gen3 over the gen2.
much faster processor
glass on glass screen, more responsive, better light penetration,
new software, with updated menus, updated touch controls allowing pinch to zoom Ect.,
built in chirp
built in wireless
Dual mini sd card reader, even on the 7".
Have You experianced all this? or processor speed differance, or is this info from Lowrance? I am planning on upgrading in Spring, but from what all Ive read and by the looks of my checking account, I am leaning toward a Gen 2 with structure scan, they are priced to sell now.
check this video out about the new software update for the gen 2 ,

I guess I need to do a little updating. Pretty slick.
You can add the wifi to the gen 2 for a lot less money. Seems to me most of the upgrades are cosmetic stuff. I don't care about a background pic anyways. Who rides down the lake looking at the background, and I'd rather see all the functions at once instead of scrolling through the screen looking for them. Duh.
I just upgraded one of my units. I like. No hidden menus to set up panels. Not much fingering the screen for the hidden stuff. Easy to set data overlays.
What the purpose of a screen saver? Holy cow. Memory waster.
PS
I also like the red X screen button for exiting (closing) open menus.
Here's a video comparing Gen2 to Gen3's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZBRi1Cuns4 It seems like a lotta nothing when You compare the prices, so far Gen2's are winning by a long shot. Hopefully they will still be available in Spring when I 'm ready to buy.
I've got 2 new touch 9s on my boat that I'm setting up now. I keep looking at the new update and wanting to install it but I wonder if I should wait a little while to see if gremlins show up in it. :dono
Yes processor speeds are quicker on the Gen3
I have done nothing with chirp, and wireless yet. I was simply quoting Lowrance on those additions.
With an upgrade you will be happy ether way. Touch are faster than the button locators and Gen 3 faster yet. Personal preference to make you decision or better yet Gen 2 will make the checking account look better.
Good luck.
I appreciate the map offer. From what I hear it should have some decent fish in it this year.
I finished wiring up my new units today. I'm going to download the 4.0 software tomorrow and hopefully start setting up some of the network stuff. I was surprised the Point1 was getting a lock while the boat was in my metal building. :highfive
Not sure I'll bother to upgrade, scrolling seems nice
Everything seems to work as I view the unit update from my recliner. I like the almost not hidden main menus. Visible helps us golden folks.
Your correct. BBC users seem to be liking 4.0 but I have to wonder how many have done on water testing. That is where the "oops" will be found. On the other hand I don't read near as much about software problems on Lowrance locators as some brands.
I wouldn't be scared. As soon as I get a chance my locators will have the newest software.
