Sardis Spillway

The COE has reduced the spillway flow to minimum and started the spring fill for the big lake. This has effectively ended the winter spillway fishing season. For the first time in the 30+ years that I have been fishing the spillway, there were no fish to be caught (or snagged) from Dec.-Feb. There seemed to be similar results from the lower lake. When there are only a couple of vehicles (or none) at the Sardis spillway in January, there is a problem. I wonder if this is an early indicator of bigger problems to come at Sardis Lake.

The last 4 times on the lower lake or at the spillway has produced no crappie for us.
At the weir there is a channel that goes to the overflow creek. We caught a lot of 9 3/4" crappie. They have to be 10" there.

Back in 2003 and 2004 dec-feb was this bad, the fishing in the lake was terrible for 3 years. But it will get better in 3 or so years.

With slower fishing comes less pressure, with less pressure comes a recovery. It's just a cycle.

I guess I should put the washing machine in moth balls this year.:biggrin

I heard that several people caught thier limits snagging on the spillway.... but it hasn't been as good s years prior,,,

I troll, pull cranks, single pole, heck i even use a minner and cork sometimes, but never had to resort to snagging to put fish in the freezer.:biggrin

What different does it make its all legal if a man wants to snag, troll or single pole who gives a crap, All i hear is let a man fish how he wants well let him fish how he wants as long as it legal

Hey now, snagging is fun. Them fish aint coming back once they get down there and that's a fact.

Alot of you that are here all the time are being internet bullies.If this man wants to discuss sardis spillway he should be able to,without a bunch of criticism.This is why new members don't stay around long.

And back on subject,nobody ever wants to admit when fish numbers are low.Yall need to get real if you think these lakes are not seeing the affects of all the pressure, you are sadly mistaken.

The way I look at it is look at arkabutla never fished it but based on this web site ain't no fish in it and nobody fishes it so its been rebounding for 3 years now. Should be right in a couple years and then look out here comes the pics and there goes the fish. I know when sardis wasn't giving keeper numbers people quit coming. Last 2 years been bumper now it seems to be declining so that's good news for next year should start losing pressure.

Wonder how all these "fishermen" would do without all their electronics, fish finders, could only use one pole, and jigs only (no minnows)?

Most of em probably would starve if they weren't using a mobile trot line

I've tried snagging several times. Didn't catch anything. It ain't easy at all. I can't stand standing elbow to elbow casting to one spot with 20 others trying to hit the same spot.

Lots of folks think its as easy as it sounds. Its not. I don't use a spin rod I just use a jig pole with a mini reel. Put about ten ft of line out and feel my way up the rocks. When something kinda gives way u set the hook. Theres an art to it for sure but more importantly its timing. Its almost what I would call a college sport because the best time is around 2 a.m.

I've heard after midnight and colder the better
