JR's Boat and Advice on Getting a Small Powered Boat Rig

Hey JR what kind of boat and motor do you have? I saw it once and think it might be the size for me. I'm planning ahead to the fast coming time when paddling alone gets too hard. I would still prefer to paddle if I have some body along.

I'm thinking a 20hp rig. That would seem like a good size for me. I don't want anything big, but would love to have advice from anybody that fishes the smaller end of the spectrum. Not going to move on it right away, but want to have all the thinking done in case I get crazy quick.

I would like to be able to bring one other person with me. I've been riding around alone for nearly 40 years and am talking to my self more and more. :) I need a human once and awhile to make me appreciate being alone.

I have a 16 ft crestliner with a 30 tiller, if you want to go fish it just let me know. I tow it with my wife's 4 cyl Toyota tacoma

Hey Mer,

Gonna take the big step? I have a 14' Xpress Jon boat.With a 25hp Yamaha Tiller. I put a deck up front with a pedestal seat and foot motor. I use riding lawn mower seats. They hold up.

I'll take some pics later today and post.

If your going to step up go to a 16ft with all the bells and whistles. Steering column, live well, and enclosed storage. If you are patient and look you can find a good one used that won't break the bank. I purchased the rig for a little more than the cost of a new 25 hp 4 stroke motor. Its just as easy to handle as a 14ft with a 25hp but as comfortable as big boat when fishing alone. Plus when you have to bring someone along its not too bad. Only problem is if its 3 it gets really crowded. Gas isn't bad at all and runs around 35 mph.

50 2 stroke. 16ft with a 50 inch bottom. Its narrow enough to get up in the trees on the north end of Lacassine. When I re-power I will go to a 40hp Tohatsu 4 stroke so I can go in the reserves. This is my last boat I plan on buying. It does everything I need and love the layout. I even thought about the same boat with a center console for a better view when running but I like to get in with the wasps and a center console is too tall. You do sit low when running but I found that 2 boat cushions on the seat puts me at the right height. I almost installed a short pedestal but its nice to hide behind the console on chilly mornings when up and running. That is something you need to consider when buying a tiller boat. I know you like to fish in the winter. Its cold with out a console to block the wind.

My first boat is an Xpress jon boat with a 15 hp Johnson. Have caught more fish than I can count out of it. It does good with 2 people though you won't break any speed records. My advice is make sure there is plenty of room between the back seat and the transom as mine is pretty close and you have to sit sideways to run the outboard. Looking around to see where you are going is literally a pain in the neck if you run any kind of distance. Put a cypress floor that is easily removeable, swivel seats, 36 lb thrust motorguide and 2 depth finders.

I probably want do anything until after the spawn, but it's fun to look to get the feel for prices and all.
