Thinking about ordering some 16ft Southern Crappie rods and have a couple questions. Currently have 14ft b n m prostaff trolling rods and 16ft b n m bucks graphite jig poles. Is the action on these closer to the prostaff trolling rods or the bucks graphite jig poles. Looking for something stiffer than the bgjp but softer than the trolling poles. Will these rods handle 1 oz weights?
In my opinion they are in between. Just what you're look'n for. I've got 14's and 16's.

o and i have been using 1oz. here lately and they do fine,wouldnt recommend anything over 1 oz. though.Call the owner ed duke and he will answer any question u have,seems like a good guy.
I use 14ft SCP's and normally use 1 oz egg sinkers, I have used 1.5oz but they put a heck of a bow in them. Also when I run double minnows I occationally find a hungry Channel cat, last one was 24"+ I use 8# Hi Vis mono which helps land the cats, but the poles take the abuse.

I don't know, so I'm asking more than saying, but I thought hybrid had a broken stripe pattern..? that looks like a white bass to me... can one of the resident expert(s) weigh in?

Body is a little too deep to be a Striper, so it's logically a Hybrid Striper ... even though it doesn't have the usual broken stripes. Barren River Lake is home to the state Hybrid Striper record fish @ 20lb 8oz

So what's the fail-safe sign to go by? Patches on the tongue like a spot vs. largemouth or something? (sorry, slow learner I guess)

Stripers are also capable of having broken or incomplete lines on their sides, so body shape, tooth patches, and lines reaching the tail have to be taken into account to distinguish a Striper from a Hybrid Striper. But, usually body shape is the first means of distinguishing between the two.
It's difficult to tell the three of them apart when they're small ... so tooth patches can help in those situations.

A lot of it has to do with where your fishing. Barren is stocked annually with hybrid. White bass have been re-introduced into the lake since they became scarce and to my knowledge don't think the lake has any Stripers. Your right, the broken lines are usually always present although not as obvious in the pic. Main thing CP nailed was the body shape. Stripers are more streamlined cylindrical shaped. Hybrids are chunks more football shaped.
Bought 2 12' rods this weekend from Ed - and plan to be waiting eagerly on the UPS guy every afternoon this week! haha.
I got 6 12 footers from him couple weeks ago and the dang lake froze back up the day before I got them!! Imagine that. If you are looking for cheap reals for spider rods. Go to cajoutdoors. Only problem is you have to order 100 bucks but that may get you 20 reals!

I got to use my new 12 footers today. I used them casting a cork about 8 inches deep for fun!! Caught one on the first cast!! New rod, new reel, new lure and old line!!! 27 within the first hour!!! What a hoot on the 12 foot southern crappie rod!!! Thanks Mr. Ed Duke!!
I just ordered 2 16 footers and 2 8 footers. I caught a 20 pound drum on the 16 footer while fishing with wiskers. I had a great time in Kentucky!!! Thanks Mr wiskers!!
