New to crappie fishing and MS.

Hey ya'll... just moved down here this past summer, and have yet to catch my first crappie. We have a boat but it's not water ready yet. Also have a canoe. But, I guess what I'm most interested in right now would be fishing from shore. I live just minutes from Enid Lake, near the long branch landing. So also close to Grenada as well.

Does anyone have any recommendations of where would be a good spot to fish from shore around here this time of year? Also, what sort of technique? Was thinking jigs under a bobber and slowly twitch, retrieve it? Brand new at this so any advice would be welcome!

Get your rig'a ready. When the water starts coming up go to the landing and go to your right. Fish up and down that bank and the flats. Spring fish will move up that creek and out into those flats as the water comes up. Go now and walk it with a camera. Take pictures and get a picture in your mind of how the land lays and where cover is. That way you can have a good idea of where to fish when covered with water. Once it starts there will be a bunch of Waders out there fishing.

Welcome.....you'll get educated real quick if you hang around here....some of that education MUIGHT be about fishin. At Enid, I see folks bank fishin in the Wallace/Hubbard creek area. That's just to the left of the ramp at Wallace and up and around the first cove. Other than that, I've not paid much attention to "bankers"....especially Wannabe. Scout the lake NOW to see where good structure is gonna be when the water comes up. Make good mental notes, or actually map it out on paper. It looks real different when the water comes up. Again, welcome to the site and the lakes. You'll get ate up with this crappie thingy real fast!!!

They also fish on the sides of the boat ramp at Water Valley when the water rises. I watched an older lady catch three in a row one day when I launched my boat in her fishing hole. She didn't mind and neither the the fish. She kept on hauling them in

Welcome from Eastern Arkansas. In a month or so you won't have any trouble telling where the fish are. The good spots will be marked with people.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. Great idea about taking some pictures of the structure now that it's exposed, gonna do that tomorrow I think. So guess it's just a bit too early then huh?

Get a hand held gps and go mark you some spots while the water is down

Its fun marking and fishing other folks stuff but more fun to catch em off a bed u made. Go down and make you some stake beds and pull some brush out and stake it down. These lakes need more folks trying to improve the habitat. Plus it will reap a lot of benefit for your freezer. As far as right now, you can catch them at the spillway. Go down the river where the water is not so swift. Find some eddie water and pitch a float and jig, twitch it, and let it sit. They will be a few ft out from the rocks so fish 16 to 18 inches deep. Lots of folks snagging this time of year and they will keep them run out. Try and find a quiet place. good luck. Ur life is bout to change forever

Jig the river where it meets the lake find structure in the river and they will be there soon. Get you some waders. Your about a month early but nice days like we're having makes it good to get out and walk the creeks and river bank. It's not easy walking the lake bottom close to where the river meets the river it can get soupy and you can be waist high in mud quick. I would suggest spillway fishing also this time of year watch others for awhile and see what works.

When the water is low and fishing is right I've seen boats in the small creek of the long branch almost to the #32 bridge.
Use the ramp at Cossar and launch your canoe for fishing Bean creek up into the timbers and out to the point. If a little breeze paddle into it then set your rods and let the wind drift you across.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Got some stuff to do today then it's cooling off again but if it warms up next week have to take a pole and go do some exploring.

my grandpa and some guys used to take four wheelers back in to all the creeks up around water valley and long branch areas during the spawn. they would take 10-12' jig poles and dab around the trees and brush along the banks. also could take a light tackle casting rig and fish a minnow or jig under a cork. spawn i figure is the only time u can do this with decent success. ive also seen ppl just anchor up at the mouth of the creeks and fish minnows under a cork. they caught quite a few just sitting there as fish would come in and out of the creek from the main lake. i personally have not tried this, but i do know there are four wheeler trails right off the highway at watervalley that lead down to the creeks and even the main lake.

I've caught lots of fish right against the bank at the Point Pleasant boat ramp. There's a good ledge that runs from the boat ramp out towards the point there. I've caught them right next to the no wake bouys at that ramp. Deroc and I did pretty good there one day. We were in separate boats, but close enough for a cast from the bank.

Bird Down is right about the spillway at Enid this time of year. Should be getting right really soon. If you follow the road along the spillway to where it dead ends, there is a ditch that holds lots of fish out of the current. It's almost to the interstate. I've caught lots of fish there and watched Feelay waylay em there one day. Put two 1/16th oz jigs about a foot apart under a 3/4"-1" pear shaped float about 6-7' deep. Just attach your main line to the bottom catch on the float. Cast out and jiggle the float. You'll catch lots of fish this way. They don't always pull the float down. If the float lays over, give it a jerk. They feed up and take the weight off the float which causes it to lay over.

Sis, last year we made a trip to Enid, on purpose, when the water was VERY LOW. I took pic and gps points and it REALLLLY helped when the water came up. It looks total different with water. That little trip gave me a pretty clear understanding where the slightest little ditch was and how they use those subtle changes in water depth to migrate or "their road maps" to move. If you can, I'd suggest a trip JUST to get a feel for the contour.
