Yep, I have had good success with the Rascals! I fish a clear water lake and my favorite colors are Acid, Black shad, and pearl truse. I use the Bandits a lot more, but the rascals have a place in my boat.
Got some samples from Robert when I ordered my Slab Bandits but I have not tried them yet.
How do you like your slab bandits?
Slab bandits are as good as any bait I have used. It seems really hard to put the Bobby Garland Baby Shad on the back burner long enough to use the SB. I also prefer to use marabou jigs a lot. That's where my user name came from !
Tennessee native Thompson was the inventor of some enduring lures, especially the Doll Fly, a jig that local outdoor writer Bob Hodge notes became the cornerstone of a company that was "at one time, believed to make more artificial baits a day than any other bait manufacturer. Unless you fished by yourself with only hooks and a worm, you knew what a Doll Fly was." Apparently at its height the firm made 75,000 lures per day--a staggering 27.5 million per year.

I was reading that article. When I came back to comment you had posted it. Interesting Fella. Said he cornered the market on polar bear hides and had a supply that would last him 5 years.
What type of jig head are the doll flies made of?
All I've ever seen/heard mentioned about what the head was made of, was that it was "alloy" .... as mentioned in this article : Hodge: Lure of Doll Fly: Thompson's bread, butter - News Sentinel Story

Interesting. Learn something new everyday.
Pappy, the couple I found in my grand dad's tacklebox aren't exactly round, Almost like a small aspirin.
You are exactly right, I wish a could find someone to make those heads. I seen the original doll flies on ebay but they want $30 for 8 jigs as much as I love fishing can't afford that.
You gotta luv this site, always something to learn here:biggrin
I see the heads as close to a walleye head as anything else I have ever seen. Beveled from the top down, and the front to the back. My last doll flies rusted away from inattention on my part. Best jig of it's kind ever.
Here you go - this is the last one I have!! I would love to have a mold to make them, but I've also seen them with ball heads too.

You could probably use the walleye head but it's balance point is different than the original head. I've been looking at the old ament catalouge and while I think I figured out which one it is finding someone that actually has that old mold is another story!!!LOL
I've posted these before these are small ballheads tied with real polar bear

MAYBE TAKE PLIERS AND PINCH FRONT, MAY HELP?
MAN, this thread got hijacked a little... Back to the original topic... We have caught lots of fish off the Lil Rascals as well as the Slab Bandits. I typically use the lil rascals when I am vertical fishing or fishing under a float and the slab bandits when longline trolling. The main thing I like about the Crazy Anglers plastics is that they are A LOT more durable than most other plastics I have used. I can catch many fish from one bait before it is ripped to shreds. This keeps me fishing instead of replacing baits. And since we longline troll a lot, I do not have to worry about dragging a bait in the water that is halfway off the hook and basically wasting its fishing time...
