Results of New dye jobs

Got my Veniards Fly dye for Xmas and got to using it today. These are the little tubes it comes in, it only calls for a 1/4 of a teaspoon with a quart (liter) of water, and there's a whole lot more left in each of the tubes.

Real easy. - heat your water to boiling, put a 1/4th of a teaspoon of the dye in take some of the hot water put it over the dye, 1 tablespoon of vinegar and mix it up good. Then pour your boiling water into the jar, stir and add feathers, I've seen where it says to soak your feathers and I've tried both ways and I like them soaked. .

Really nice Fatman. I wondered what you were going to do with all those feathers. Interesting how only the wing stem took the color. I bet you get it figured out as usual! Thanks for sharing.

They are all nice but I really like the way the Orange and Yellow turned out. Those are going to make some nice tie's.

z520tom - I waited for 3 years before I took a chance on doing it!!LOL I just kept trying till I got the colors I wanted. I learned a lot from other folks who were good at it, and passed on what they knew - just going another step with the Veniards plus they had Fluorescent colors!

Stump - yeah I think I'm going to re-do the fl. red, I kept the fuzz on the feathers as I read about a new pattern on Fly Anglers on-line that uses the fuzz in a fly and though since I'm dyeing the feathers get double duty.

Nice job buddy, now how about some jigs tied with them? I still fight off the desire to dye some my self. Plus I am just not sure I can get the colors I want. I have a pound of mallard flank that I have had several years and it just sits in a couple gallon zip lock bags. Maybe one day I will fold to this.

oh and on the FL Red, what a shame that doesn't come out right! FL Red should be that totally hot pink looking color when not under a black light!

and the FL Yellow came out looking like the Chart I really like! Looks close to my hackle color!

Skip - The Fl. red not coming out could very well be the DA that was doing it!!!!LMAO!!! and this weekend I'm going to re-do them to find out. Yeah I was really happy with the Fl. yellow. Spent the summer fishing and time with my grand daughter. Haven't tied anything since Jun 2013! I've poured, powder painted, dyed feathers and fur, cut zonker strips and bought all kinds of stuff - the prep work is all done now just gotta get off my butt and do it!!

With just getting back to work Monday after 9 months out have to re-organize my time!!!

How long did you soak the feathers? And did you take them out and have them dry on newspaper. Looks like it could be one heck of the mess

All I ever read is that Veniards is the dye of choice for tying materials! I am sure it's a learning. Experiance too though! Trying to get just the shade you want on one color may take a bit of experimenting.

I do them for about 10 minutes, I'll even shake them to make sure. I set up paper towel about 5 double pieces thick on each side ahead of time to lay the feathers on after rinsing. I just followed the directions that came with the dye.

Wearing rubber gloves take the container with your dye and flank feather and pour it through a strainer I have the cold water running and I rinse the bottle. Run the cold water over the feathers working them and when you see the water run clear - take a big handful of feathers and squeeze them, all you should get is water. Lay them on the paper towel and get all the single ones still in the strainer and put them on the paper towel and fold the other side over and press them. You will get a bit of color but that's okay.

Take the dyed wet feathers and put them in an old pillow case with a static sheet, tie a knot in it and toss it in the dryer. I do 5 mins of heat drying and then put them on 10 mins of no heat. Check them and when dry pack in ziplock bags. Fur pieces and the heavier wing feathers I tried with RIT and Kool-Aid I pressed and dried between paper towel and checked them daily - watching video's on youtube some used a hair dryer to help speed drying.

Yes it can be a mess if you don't take your time!!!! Make sure you have real Ball canning jars with the raised letters! They do have some that aren't and I found out the hard way when I poured hot water into the bottle it cracked with purple RIT dye in it!! The only thing that saved me was that I had an old cookie sheet with newspaper on it that I have the jars on when dyeing.

FM.....have feathers from a buddy who just returned for down south. Question......did you clean the feathers prior to starting process. I believe you also received yours from some duck hunters.

Yup real quick and easy to clean up - I have a plastic coffee jar with lid and I mix some borax and dawn foaming dish liquid you don't need much. I check them real quick as sometimes when they pull them out there were bits of meat on them just trimmed it off with scissors then dump them in the wash. I use medium hot water with the borax and dawn and shake em up - If you put too much water in you'll know when you shake the container you won't feel the water banging around in the jar.

After shaking let em sit for 20-30 mins then shake again - then pour them into a mesh strainer and rinse them off. At this point if you're ready to try dyeing them they're soaked real well - if not toss in a pillow case and 5 mins of heat in the dryer then 10-15 just air until dry. I put a couple of anti static sheets in the pillow case with the feathers but you'll still have some that have the cling effect!! Get all the feathers out and carefully take the pillow case outside and snap it to get any of the fuzz off the pillow case. Then put in zip bags and you're ready to go.

Okay Doug I got the feathers and took some picture under a Black Light and here they are. Same Order you sent them on first couple then I changed order. All of them have good Florescent properties and worked well! I did try several different setting on camera and the one I really wanted I could get right yet. Will try more later for that one. Hope you like the results, I did!

Your welcome, anytime! They did pop really nice and there is no denying that is very good Florescent dye! I am trying to figure out how I took pictures on another setting back a couple years ago and have not yet, but if I do I will share it too!

Nice, I could use a couple of those purple ones.

I get mine from Stone River Outfitters in New Hampshire - Veniard's Fly Dye you can find it on ebay but they don't always have the colors. Stone River only orders it twice a year.

Only other option I know of is to order from England - here's a link to the color chart at the shop in England Veniard Dye Colour Chart Page 1 Couple of guys I know on the fly boards order from this shop and have no problems and they are quick to answer any questions.
