Also what cause some jigs to come out darker than other? Attachment 184392
Same paint is used
Here's what little I know of viynl paint! I was always told to dip the head of the jig in vinegar, rinse then dry completely to get any oils from skin off and any older ones may have some oxidation to get off. Paint eyes hope Jackie chimes in cause I use 3d eyes on mine. If you're going to be using plastics make sure to epoxy coat the heads or the plastics will melt it.
Advise from the best in the Business!! I have learned form Fat man's post!!!! Did not think I was listing and watching your threads!! Always watching and learning from Fat man's post's!! The vinegar and rinse is the key on vinyl paint!! Fat man taught me to use a White under coat helps!!
Ok so rinse with the vinegar and I will have white eyes?
Here is final product. Still fishable lol. Just not what I wanted.
Thanks for help. Attachment 184407
Looking good Bowhunter!!Looking Good!!
Would love to have this mold modified for 3 d eyes.
Anyone good at modified em for 3d eyes?
Should've cleaned eyes out but oh well. Just something else to do on a rainy day lol.
JW, those eyes are fine. The fish don't care about a tint difference. I know you want them the best you can get but keep it all in perspective. I use Testor's model paints for my eyes and do well, still need a clear coat. I just bought the clear that Scott uses and plan on doing some heads with the airbrush too. I made this to do eyes with, holds a bit over a couple dozen. Glue and staple with a 1/8 carpet staple on a piece of Oak so it doesn't shift so easy. Do 1 side complete and let them set up and then turn em over without touching the paint as it doesn't all dry the same speed, then do the other and let em set up good before the second dot is added. Have fun.
Skeet that's a great idea. I been hanging mine on cardboard box. Will the clear coat vinyl do anything to the powder paint ?
How thin do you dilute the paint? Also can you dip them in head cement before applying paint?
If you want a spot for the 3d eye and don't want to mod the mold, just take a pair of pliers with SMOOTH inside edges and slightly flatten the sides big enough to fit a 3d eye. Do a lot of mine that way. Here's a video on how to do it by another board member Stump Hunter.

"WOW"!!! Cannot beat experience thanks Fatman,Stumphunter!!! Great site!!! enoyed the video!!
Good info there thanks.
Hey bowhunter, Make a few hundred and send me the one's you don't want. I kinda like the orange/yellow eye ones.:biggrin
Messed up on this one!!!!!!!!
"I powder coated all my jigs and heat treated them. I have vinyl paint and the eyes are changing from white to yellow on my orange jigs."
Saw vinyl and thought the whole jig was done that way!! DA!! LOL Anyone doing all vinyl first advice is good but now I really don't know what to think of white vinyl changing to yellow. What orange is it?? Blaze, Fluorescent, Bright?? Got a buddy that does all his jigs with vinyl and I'll kick him an email and see if he knows what could cause this.
I'll let you know.
Akb, Try putting a clear coat as a second layer on your heads and fire them off. Is the orange ProTec or something else? There are different chemistry formulas on some of the powder paint. With the color difference (Dark jig pic) it is usually uneven or not enough heat to set it up.You are getting a reaction for the paint to bleed through and is the vinyl CS Coatings? Check this out. Powder Formulation 101 : Products Finishing
Yes it's ca coating white vinyl. I powder coated blaze orange on the heads first. It is pro tec powder paint. Only happened with orange that the white changed colors.
I had some pink and orange heads that turned real dark and didn't stay bright in color. Thoughts on that?
Thanks all.
Just vinyl eyes. Will the vinyl stay after placing eyes or should I clear coat them.
Just remember that the paint on the eyes are thin so you will get a little bleed through on the darker colors. You jigs look very good.
I paint a lot of orange jigs and this is what I've seen some times when I first tried it. Make sure you powder paint a white under coat before the orange coat. The darker orange could be from 2 things....No under coat with a layer of orange that is to thin, that the lead head is seen thru it. To much heat on the orange will make it darker at times also. What I've done is this when painting bright colored heads....(MY WAY)Take your jig and put it over the HEAT GUN for a count of 5.(APR) Then swish it into the white powder Holding the jig with a needle nose over the eye. You don't want the jig paint to cream over instantly our smoke, if it is it's to hot!! Now the jig should have a little of a powdery look to it. Put back over heat gun until jig paint turns that smooth creamy look to it. Now as soon as the jig turns smooth dip(needle nose) into your orange color. Shouldn't have creamed over and then put the jig back over heat gun to cream that color over. THIS is when timing is important,to long and you will over heat it and it will give you that dark orange. I have a glass of water that I dip the jigs in to cool the head so it doesn't get to hot to long. This hole process for a single jig paint should only take about 20 seconds to do. I hope this helps you our any one else . Have a good day. STEVE
Ok thanks all for the tips and comments. I may have over heated the jigs as the paint just creamed smooth after dipping in paint. Will try some of the new things.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...ec16f4265d19c4ARB. These jigs are Blaze Orange and Super Glow Orange from Pro Tec. They have a white base coat followed by the orange and then they are dipped in UV Blast for the final coat. The eyes are vinyl paint applied with the ends of drill bits. These jigs were painted six months ago and I do not see any yellowing. It might be the final UV Blast power paint dip had some affect but not sure about this. The darker ones are Blaze orange and the lighter ones are Super Glow orange.
Those are very fine looking and thanks for sharing
got a message back from my buddy and here's what he said "I know I have put eyes on powder in the past with testers enamel and it worked good, and I have put vinyl eyes on vinyl heads when I wanted a more transluscent looking eyeball. I always over coat the head after putting eyes on there with the clear gloss vinyl, but it will soften a baked powder head somewhat this is the reason I don't use powder any more and also it seems to ave a dull finish on it after fishing for a while, but a clear coated vinyl head will shine like nobodys business, they are a pain to do but to me they are worth it.
So it could very well be the vinyl re-acted with the powder painted head and softened it up. Maybe switch over to the testors with a clear epoxy coat.
Really like those roller swivels but wish there was a way to buy them in bulk for a decent price.
The solvent base for that vinyl paint is leaching color out of the powder coat and yes even when fully cured this will happen. On chartreuse the white will yellow too. I finally gave up and just put the eyes on and colors be damned, they can do what they want. I can say that because I don't add eyes to any of my jigs except a Do-It Flathead jig that I tie in bucktail or some 1/64 flu flu ties I do for sunfish.
Great thread. Fatman, beat me to the idea with the pliers. LOL Story of my life a couple days late as usual. LOL
Great looking jigs guys.
Here is what I do with 3D eyes. I hope it helps. I do the powder paint, baking and everything just like you would normally do. Then I take Loc-Tite super glue "Gel Control". It is a grey bottle with blue finned sides. I use this to attach the 3D eyes to the jig head. I allow the super glue to dry completely. Then I use a Clear Vinyl paint by CS Coatings called "Clear Vinyl". I dip the complete jig head up to the hook in the bottle of clear paint. I then dab off the extra "paint" and set the jig head on a rack facing down and let them dry for 12 to 16 hours. After the clear vinyl is dry you can just about bounce the jig head off of a rock and the eyes will stay intact. You have basically just put a clear coat on the jig head like the clear coat on a car's paint job.
I realize that this is a long and time consuming process but the jigs look fantastic after this is done to them.
I hope this helps someone,
Take care and stay safe,
Bobo
Awesome info guys
Ok thanks micro.
