See the fish ,catch the fish, I'm with you . I'm a HB guy no need to upgrade if it's still working. I'm still killing deer with 15 yr old bow, the deer are still dying no need to speed thousand on a new bow can't kill them anymore lol. Nice picture
That's a great shot Don ...
:ThumbsUp
Rickie
Very good Don.
Nothing wrong with that all :ThumbsUp
Whatever works for you and fits the budget :ThumbsUp
Don,
was the dock still standing or did you scan over it.
ive never seen a better doc pic if you too a side scan,
Awesome pic Don, I gotta get me an si unit.
GREAT SHOT DON,REALLY GOT IT TUNE IN
Dock ??? What dock ?? :dono All I see are trees and a ball of fish :Rofl
(or are those "match" shaped images the dock supports/posts ?? And if so, why do they not go all the way up to the prop wash strip ??)
... cp :kewl
I would guess those are indeed the dock posts starting in the left water column at about the 18ft SI Range line ...
This would mean the dock was a little over 18ft from the xducer before the sound pulse actually 1st contacted the dock posts ...
Echoes of a vertical structure all the way to the centerline would mean the xducer would be right up against the dock posts = shorter distance to xducer ...
Rickie
Thanks for bailing me out, Rickie..:ThumbsUp Gene usually has to do that..:ThumbsUp
OK ... I can grasp that. But, why would the fish or trees show up "above" the dock posts ?? If the SI signal is 90deg/side, why wouldn't it show a solid object (that rises above the water's surface) reaching all the way to the center line/prop wash image ?? Don has the range set at 50' ... so if the dock is around 20' away from the transducer, it would seem that it should show the posts going all the way to the surface (or at least a image above the ball of fish).
Had I only seen the screenshot, and not been told of a dock being there, I would never have suspected there being a dock in the image ... and probably figured the "matchsticks" images to be tree trunks or posts from a dock that no longer exists.
... cp :kewl
Those are nice shots Don, but you do know if those fish ever find out you are not running the latest depth finder, they will not bite.
CP,IT IS NOT UNUSAL TO GO BY A BRIDGE SUPPORT THAT COMES OUT OF THE WATER AND SEE FISH OVER TOP OF BRIDGE SUPPORT ON SCREEN IN SI,DI OR 2D. IF THE FISH IS 8 FEET FROM DUCER UNDER BOAT OR TO THAT SIDE IN 2 FEET F WATER,AND U ARE 12 FEET FROM SUPPORT WHEN U GO BY IT WITH DUCER IT SHOW THE FISH 8 FEET DOWN AND PILLOW AT TOP OF WATER TOPPING OUT AT 12 FEET,U HAVE TO UNDERSTAND IT MEASURES DISTANT,I LEARN THIS BY GOING BY BRIDGE MANNY TIMES TO HELP ME UNDERSTAND WHAT IT WAS TELLING ME.IT IS ACCURATE BUT OUR UNDERSTANDING SOMETIMES IS NOT,HOPE THIS DO NOT CONFUSE U TOO MUCH
The dock posts are approx. 18ft from the xducer ... Therefore painting the structure as starting approx. 18ft to left of the center line ...
As the left SI sound pulse is traveling toward the dock posts ... The first 18ft of its travel is merely thru water with no reflected echo ...therefore black (no data) between the centerline and the Left SI 18ft Range line ...
It's not until the sound pulse has traveled 18ft from the xducer that the sound pulse 1st contacts the dock posts ... Then starts painting the dock post reflection ...
The fish school is more rounded ...
Some of the individual fish (of the rounded school) are closer to the xducer than the dock posts are ...
The individual fish (of the rounded school) that are closest to the xducer would be painted closer to the centerline ...
I agree ... Vertical posts are difficult to discern in an SI image ...
Rickie
Well. The hds 8, in Dons hands is as good as it gets.
Now I'm confused..:scratchhead:scratchhead:scratchhead:scr atchhead:scratchhead Google stuff yeall
One last question, May have been answered. I see fish on both sides of the si image. This tells me the the school was directly under the boat.
If if was just on one side, it would show only on that side? Or am I nuts.
It could have been a school so big as to be under the boat AND around the poles?
I could be wrong, but I think the fish are under the boat, kind of of hanging off the edge of were the water is getting deeper and the dock is just to the left.some of the fish are probably around under the dock, but most are not
Yeah, I get the distance not depth translation of the ping (I have a DI unit). That's exactly why I don't understand why there is no dock pole image above the fish. Even a ghost image appearing would make more sense than no return signal image at all.
All I'm saying is ... say the transducer is about 1ft under the water, and it's supposed to be shooting out a sonar ping at 90deg/side ... then why would it not show the dock post above the ball of fish, even if it only reached to within one foot of the centerline ?? It shows fish higher in the water column than the dock post ... and the dock post is a more solid object, so it should reflect a good image. I can understand the fish ball blocking out part of the dock post return signal, but not why the dock post return signal isn't being picked up "above" the fish ball, which tops out at 10' "deep" (in the screen image) but which is actually 10' from the transducer. The dock posts are not more than 50' away from the transducer, else they wouldn't show anywhere in the screen image .... the sonar ping is picking up the bottom half of the posts, so why not the top half ?? Wouldn't the SI ping pick up fish just below the surface, as long as they were within the set distance range .... even though they would appear to be as "deep" as they were actually distant from the transducer ??

Good deal DonG. The only time I see a dock in that depth of water is when my dock in under water. But, I guess you know this.:dono
Keep the posts coming. I'm glad I posted the snapshot because I sure am learning more about this stuff.
What degree is it pinging Justin? And how do you know?Does it have to do with water depth or what?
ah but you need that NEW GEN III....better target separation......
We need GPS numbers to confirm these pictures!! :biggrin
:Roflyea, it looks photoshopped, blended, to grainy and to smooth.:Roflwhy are some things showing on only one side of si and showing up on di?:Rofl
:RoflI think the other brand shows that color palette better.:RoflDon, are you sure your transducer is level?:Rofllooks fuzzy also:RoflDevil IconDevil Icon:angel::angel::angel:
I've been starting to follow these types of post because I'm thinking about investing in one but beginning to believe I'm not smart enough. I understand where crappiepappy is coming from does boat speed have any thing to do with it? Could the thin dock post at the surface level already been past by the sonar beam before it was returned causing an incomplete picture?
Kos, I'm not smart enough to "photoshop"...nonono I do like the HB Amber 1 & 2 better than the Lowrance Tan color:ThumbsUp but a nice HB user(Wayne P) is helping me on using the darker Lowrance palette. He told me how to lighten it up and I'm going to try his suggestion next time out.
I took your advice on a "tilted" transducer and that must be my fuzzy problem...:Rofl
I will try to get a better image next time out.......:dono
PS::::: When is the baby due???:Rofl:Rofl:Rofl
To all of the people that don't have a si/di unit...don't pay any attention to post #33.thats just a joke. That picture that Don posted is a really good example of how well these units work and also shows that even with all of the information that's being displayed, there still has to be some interpretation of what's being displayed. These units , even as advanced as they are, still can only display the ping returns as distance, not acual location.its really great that Dons, describing what he's seeing also.:ThumbsUp
The regular posters know what we are doing. I have learned a lot from you, Rickie, & Wayne P even though we have sets from different manufacturers. Nice to have that kind of help
I don't know if everyone knows about "the baby"..:Rofl:Rofl:Rofl You might want to post another picture of the sonogram..:Rofl
I have a rough road to travel. Here are my fishing partners::
