I am looking to start tying, I want to make my own gnats, for spider rigging. I just need to know what I need to buy to get started.I have been looking and think it wont be to bad. I know the more you get into it the more your going to end up with more supplies so any suggestions on tools and basic supplies to get started would be appreciated.
Steve, get you one of those inexpensive tying kits. Vise will hold your hooks and has all the tools you need to get started. Get you some spools of flat waxed 230 denier jig tying thread, some flash, and some rubber skirt material. All of it can be had from JannsNetcraft pretty reasonable. Watch some of the videos on YouTube and you can figure out how to tie in materials,wrap and tie off thread. Use clear Sally's hard as nails for thread sealer.
thanks Cray I was thinking that was about what I need to do. I know there is a lot of different prices out there on tools and I don't need the high priced ones, Im thinking one of the sets that cost 75 or less will get me everything I need and may be a little better set in that price range

Check out the supplies/tools at walmart, craft jewelry making section. I needed a small side cutter of sinker/jig casting. I found this one at about half price as some other places. Wire And Rivet Flush Cutter - Walmart.com
I use the cheapest clear fingernail polish for thread sealer.
I use nylon thread from the fabric store.
Most of the hair comes from Wild Wolf, ShilohRed.

Couple of vises and inexpensive tool kit right here. That Super A or Super II either one would work for you.
look at Ebay for your skirt lot of good deals on there and Barlows for other like thread and tying supplies good fishing to you

When I started I found an ad with 4 bobbins, start bid was $5 and $2 shipping. I guess no one wanted 4 bobbins at once, I was the only bid.

Helloween at Dollar Tree. They carry some long haired wigs in bright colors. I combed through it and gathered the hair as tight as I could as a flat piece. Ran a seam of glue every 4 1/2 inches across it. After the glue is cures cut the hair at the glue.
Is it worth the extra money to get a rotary vise?
Probably depends on who you ask and maybe what kind of stuff they tie, but for me personally absolutely yes. I have a Renzetti that was something like $220 and then becaus I like the features of a Nor-Vise I bought one and that is around $300 plus close to $100 for each different type or size jaw and I have several of them. You wouldn't need anything like this though unless you really get serious. I even sell the Peak, but use the Nor. This is definitely a personal type decision and each one has to make that. there is a vise called a mayfly 2 on ebay that people say is a pretty good vise from what i have found. I think I might get it. Its a rotary vise
Look into the anvil line of vise', They handle real smooth from those I've been around, and the peak is definitely money well spent.
I do t know that vise, but also maybe we look at this a little different okay? Not sure what kind of equipment you use at work or at home regular like, but I am sure there are some that make that tool much better than a different one or cheap one, right? Well if you happen to have both. One not so hot and one really nice, well then your changing what you do or use and don't need either any longer so let's sell them. Now do you think it's going to be easier to sell that cheap one that is just short of junk, or do you think it would be easier to get some of your money back o. A superior tool you have? I have always found it's much easier to get a little money back on something of quality! Just my 2 cents and I dont know one thing about that vise so I can not say it's no good or it's good enough, no way I can justify making a comment on a mayfly 2 vise.Quote:

Thanks Bobo, I had already been to the site to check out what would be the better selections. I still don't know wether to spend a little more upfront and if things don't work out I can sell it easier. I have been looking at a mayfly 2 on ebay but I haven't found anyone that knows anything about them on here anyway. It looks like a decent vise and the guy that has them made looks like an Ok guy

I like the looks of it but know no history. The only thing I think of is that some jaws are made of off quality steel and will snap off a side of the jaw at some point. If replacement jaws were available I would go for it. If it turns out to be good and smooth you'll be ahead of the game. Good luck with it and keep us posted.
