Got my first batch of feathers from a buddy and spent the day cleaning them - out of a packed one gallon bag after cleaning I got all these so far still have more to do. My wife showed me the veniards dye to make sure it was the right colors so I know I'll be getting it!!

I bought a lot of dyes while waiting for a call from anyone about feathers and white fur.
washing feathers I use regular dish soap and put them in the sink work on them for about 10 minutes and then rinse them off and then I put them in a laundry bag or pillowcase and throw them in the dryer I use a zip tie for the end of the pillowcase I do the same process when I'm dying feathers .
Yeah the guys take good care of me with feathers and I have a couple more who will be sending me some also. This is just the first bag he's sent me I've got more coming. I put them in a mix of Dawn and borax and hot water and have them in a tall plastic coffee can with lid - agitate the heck out of them, drain the water refill and shake em again. Then they get a nice luke warm rinse, a soft squeeze to get most of the water out and then the pillow case's and in the dryer.
Cleaned materials also make it much nicer tying.
I know only because the wife wanted me to check and make sure the colors were right the Veniard fly dye - got 3 colors in but 3 are back ordered. Still need to get some tied with the feathers I dyed last year.
Stump - ALWAYS like the Lemon barred flank feathers!!! Use a lot of them for the Catskill style dry flies.

Yep, you asked for feathers and I added to it asking for feathers and fur. I bought $60 worth of dye and still waiting.
Have one guy here and a couple of different hunting and fly tying boards where I'm a member. As I'm also a fly tyer I've been in material swap box's on those sites and get lots of good feathers there and furs also.

I'm curious as to what type of fur you guys are after. What about deer hair or squirrel tails?
Some guys use a lot of Buck Tail, but body hair would mostly be fly tyers. Squirrel is or should be used by more tiers. I have all I need of both, but sure seems some of the guys here would lover some tails! Kip tail (calf) is a big one for jig tiers and used by many. After that most any kind of fur/hair is used in fly tying if not jigs and I mean most any kind from a mole skin to Moose Mane. I even have a small amount of Temple Dog hair which is really long nice stuff!Quote:

I'm headed back deer hunting Thursday. I need a reason to kill some squirrels. I sure don't mind sending someone some tails if they can use them. We are about to do a little "cleaning" of our land and ridding it of some coons and coyotes as well as some hogs. I'll spend some time doing all of this in the next couple of months. coyote is not bad looking fur and I wouldn't mind some more of possible, but has to be on skin. Some of you guys tying should get some of this too, it's not bad looking hair at all! I traded a guy Something for a little coyote and just kind of holding it so far.mi do that with a lot of stuff and some of it I have had for several years and never tied with it yet, LOL! Have several ones I can think of just off the top of my head that I still want to tie something with it really bad, just have not.
guys you always can store feathers and fur/hair and use it when the mood moves you!

I'll cut tails off the deer and squirrels from this coming weekend and put them in the freezer. I'll post up what I have next Monday and if someone wants them, then you can let me know. I don't believe in wasting any part of any animal or bird that can be used.
i just leave em in a bag in the freezer for a couple months.all that processing just adds chemical smells to the feathers IMHO.dying is another story.guys i know use koolaid for dye.but i am not a commercial operation and only tie some flies and jigs for myself
