I think I know what your calling a mushroom anchor. I have one but my main one is a large flat chunk of lead. I only anchor for Catfishing but anchors work best with enough rope to pull an angle and stop wave action from lifting off the bottom. Side ways pull ( not straight down / on short rope )holds better for me. Also anchor point tied on front / stern of boat holds better in the wind or current.
good to know thanks for info
I use a couple (when I anchor). I don't like to use them in deeper water unless the surface is like glass. If it is windy, the more angle to the rope the better. I have tried them on windy days in my 16' Pan Fisher when a mile of rope would not work. DP
old trick. Tie your anchor to one of the bottom holes of the shroom anchor and then use a wire tie to attach it next to the main eyelet and on up back to the boat. Then is she gets hung up pull real hard and the wire tie will break and let you pull the anchor from the bottom and get it back. An anchor saved is a dollar earned.
Let me be clear that my response isn't meant to be negative toward this quote in any way. Nimrod is an expert fisherman and boatman and has been so longer than I've probably been alive. However, I don't think he would want anyone to think that anchoring from the stern in "swift" current is a good idea. I witnessed a man do this in the little red river in swift current and when the rope ran out of slack water came over the back of his boat stern faster than he could say "OH Crap". Needless to say we had to cut the rope, help him gather up his stuff that floated off, bilge his boat out and tow him back to the ramp.
Thats a good idea there... Thanks.
We use 8-10lb mushroom anchors in the small boats on the smaller lakes around here quite often. More times than not I find them to be a pain, now that I'm. Used to a bigger boat with a better trolling motor/boat control system.
With that said we dont have fancy trolling motors our small boats, so a mushroom anchor keeps us on spot easier than working the old/small tiller style trolling motor.
I use them. I have no problems with mine. I have an 18 foot Triton aluminum boat and it's got to be too windy to fish for it not to hold. It is all about the length of line you have out and you have to play it a little. There's some work involved, but nothing is free and you get out of it what you put in it.
I can put mine out and play it a little and figure out just how much rope to put out. When I get it set, if the wind dies a little, I can bump my trolling motor to get me moving. I haven't said it, but I use mine when trolling (spider rigging) or when I'm catfishing on the river. Be careful which lakes you drag it in as you will drag into peoples brush piles. I use mine in lakes like Reelfoot and have no issues with it.
I'd be glad to talk to you on the phone and explain how I use mine if you like. If so, shoot me a PM and I'll send you my number.
I have a couple of them in the boat but rarely anchor up. Always on the move it seems.
I very seldom anchor, have had wet experiences!:Rofl
