Has anyone ever used one to mark structure and return back to it? I have an old hds gen 1 an cannot get back on a waypoint to save my life. Rather upgrading to gen2 and a point 1 I thought I might try this as I already have a Garmin e trex that I have used to mark bluegill beds in the past before I got the lowrance.
That's what I'm currently doing with an older Lowrance H2O. My HB unit is messed up and locks up when I try to mark a waypoint, so I just started using the handheld. I can hold it right over top of the TD on the TM and it is very accurate.
Been using a yellow e-trek for 7-8 years . never a problem . mark Enid when on winter pool and fish when it gets water on it .
I like the Garmin 62. Handheld. I use it got trail riding and fishing. They are cheap also
I have an old Gamin GPSMAP 60Cx that I bought new for 80% off when that model was discontinued. That's the only reason I bought it but it has proved itself over and over. I have used it hunting, fishing and just in the car. It has been especially valuable here because Oklahoma puts out a spreadsheet with state brushpiles on it. I can download that thru EasyGPS in seconds. Then, when on the water I use it to find the brushpiles, look at them, and decide if I want to mark them as a waypoint on my Lowrances or not. Mine is as accurate in finding waypoints as any non-military GPS I have used. I do find however that, when fishing, I want a good chart visible on my Lowrance at all times so I would buy a new df/gps instead of just relying on the handheld.
Just throw a marker buoy when you get to the spot you marked, you’ll be close! Approach from another angle if needed and throw another, never fails. I use and Etrex a lot, blue on if it matters but also have used the yellow one.
I would give it a try since you already have a unit. I still use a handheld with my Humminbirds and the heading sensor GPS.
I mused to use a Garmin E trex and it worked. I now have Low HDS Gen it works okay too.
With the Gen 1 I had to learn start looking a little farther away and to slow way down while approaching the waypoint.

You could also use your phone and download the Navionics app and mark spots on it. You can then use the app to travel to that spot anytime. The app shows you the speed and direction you are going and when you get on a marker you can see the spot you marked on the map easily.

gps eats phone batteries.
I keep a phone charger in the boat at the helm........ I keep the iphone connected to charger.
What problem do you have using the etrex? That is what I use .
You don't have to leave your phone "ON" all the time. Mine goes into sleep mode after 1 minute saving battery. You don't need to have the app open all the time. Only when you are navigating.
Look for 1 second updates on gps.
