Picture taken yesterday by Bob Mislan, on Stumpy Lake in Virginia Beach. There are about 6 otters in the lake that have stripped it of fish. The otters are fun to watch, but my last honey hole had an otter and now it is fishless.
We have alot of em here on the eastern shore too but knock on wood we still get crappie where we see em. They will however spoke the fish if there active rite when your fishing .Got a friend who traps he just showed me tanned otter hide at work friday it was a 52 inch otter he said there tricky to catch tho .My son has an otter skull in his room that the jaw works

If that's a sunfish then it has a big mouth!!!!

The otters aren't to blame for the lack of fish at Stumpy Lake. It is the shallow water impoundment less than 5 foot and the periods of drought that occur there. Fish lose the cover when the water pulls back. Not to mention that lake had a major fish kill 10 years or so ago when a developer lower the water 18" all at once in the middle of the summer to have some surveying done. Then the major drought we had 2-3 years ago where when you drove down the golf course road and looked out at the lake it was mud even the Cypress trees in the middle of the lake were high and dry. Besides there are way more than enough crayfish in that swamp to keep the otters fed.
Otter will not stick around if there arent fish. Unlike fishermen, they aren't wasting their time in fishless waters. Plus most of the fish they catch and eat are dinks so they are doing a service weeding out the dinks.

Yep there are otters in stumpy lake and yesterday there was a bear spotted, maybe the bear smelled the otters?? perhaps nature will take can of itself.
