X-2 on a Henderson gathering. Would doing it when the Spring bite is on make it easier for us that don't know Henderson?
"gene"
We need a monthly get together
Excellent attitude Swamppers, thank you. Not at all what you read on other forums.
As for a Henderson gathering, I have thought about that in the past. We started the Toledo Bend gathering so everyone around the state (both north and south) could attend and not be a local event where most drive in for the day/evening and go home. I am all for a Henderson gathering as Gene as stated - since I'm only 30 minutes away :). We need a place for our out of town guests to stay for the night, as well as a gathering spot out of the weather just in case. I know the motel next to Pat's is nice because I have had friends stay there. Just my thoughts.
There is another hotel in Henderson (Holiday Inn Express) and there is also a new hotel in Breaux Bridge right off the interstate just 10 minutes away from Henderson so accommodations shouldn't be a huge problem. As for cover in the event of rain, if we plan in advance I know my company has a tent and I could probably get another or a couple more if necessary. We're in the heart of the oilfield around here and most companies have tents that they'll lend out. Heck even the Sheriff has a couple that they will let groups use and they'll even send the trustees out to set them up. I say we meet up one day and start planning in advance. I am only a "minner" on the forum but I am certainly willing to help in any way possible to get a gathering together to make new friends.
we could either use the new landing pavillion by bayou amy or we could use the park and hall in Henderson there is plenty of places we just need to figure out a date i would say march or april when the fish are spawning
Jason.....I looked at that pavilion and parking area on my way home.....I don't know if it is big enough.....I will take a picture of it my next trip over......I think we may need some place bigger.....the locals might not like it if we came in and filled up the parking lot with all our vehicles with boats attached.....we had about 100 folks at D'Arbonne and the Toledo Bend gathering usually is large.....I think an event here will bring a lot of folks....at Toledo Bend we have a pavilion which has a kitchen, restrooms and a huge dining area with lots of tables and chairs....we need a place for people to sit and eat.....it is perfect especially in really cold or rainy conditions.....all the major fish frying is done outdoors under a tent....these events usually are for 2 days and a pot luck supper on Friday and Saturday nights....some folks may actually come for 3, 4, 5 or 6 days.....some people bring their RV's so a campground close by would be good.....
Here is the way I see it.....first, we have to decide if this is a one or two day event....is it fishing only or a get together at night with pot luck suppers also....we usually eat pretty good.....after all, it is Louisiana......some people may not want to drive far for only one day....
just my thoughts....
I think the pavilion at the park in Henderson would be a great place, lots of cover and there is a kitchen/serving area there with plenty parking.
We have to do this
Give us the details on the pavilion you speak of - availability, cost, location, etc. Maybe a picture as well.
I will try my best to get back today before dark to get a picture. I will also give City Hall a call to find out costs.
I just stumbled across the topic of the Henderson gathering. Haven't had the pleasure of meeting any of you but look forward to doing so. Anything I can do to help with organizing just let me know.
i believe the pavillion is free i can get the hall for around the same price they are both very large buildings with plenty of parking if we can come up with a date i can check availability
I have crossed the Henderson swamp many times driving between Lafayette and Baton Rouge and have always wanted to fish it, but was a little intimidated by the shear size of the area and the many waterways running through it. But, if ya'll get a Henderson gathering organized I just may come. Maybe someone could fish with me in my boat or maybe I could just follow someone around. Either way, I believe it would be fun.
Henderson gathering is a great idea, but maybe we ought to continue the discussion in a thread with a more related title. Some may be missing all this good stuff. They skip threads where the title doesn't catch their attention. How about "Henderson Gathering Discussion"?
These are some more of my thoughts.....since we already have two other gatherings with 2 days each of competitive fishing, lets start this one off for one day, say a Saturday, and see how it takes off....to push for two days may be trying on those who have families, jobs or other interests like attending the other 2 gatherings.....this does not mean that those who are retired or whatever can not come and stay as long as they like....
I would also propose that we have a weigh in at 3 PM like most bass tourneys and eat around 4:30.....this would give a lot of folks time to drive back home if they did not want to spend the night.....
we also need to consider scheduling this around other crappie happenings like the tourneys Treefrog has on 3/21 and 4/25.....then there are the Henderson "Take Dat" tourneys....
just wanted to throw some other ideas out....discussion invited......
so, what do you think of a one day event for this first one??????
Well I only live a couple of hours away so I think this is a GREAT IDEA! I drive 6 hours to Darbonne and 4 hours to Larto & 3 hours to Toledo, so driving 2 hours to Henderson sounds great!
Don't know if i can hide from 100 people.
The Henderson "Take Dat" tourneys are during the week, so it shouldn't be a problem. We must consider those that want to attend that work on a rotation in the gulf - so you fellas look ahead at your schedules and chime in. I figure on a Saturday as well, for those who have to be at work bright and early Monday morning. I say sometime mid April should work. Swamppers, et al, do you want to check on the availability of the pavilion then and let us know? As Bruce has mentioned, a pavilion is ideal. Regardless of the weather, everyone is out of it. Also, everyone has a place to sit done and eat. Just my thoughts.
As far as a competition tourney, I guess I will de donating my share to Swamppers or The Fisherman :). At least an excellent fish fry will be involved.
Again, just my thoughts.
Sounds good to me, any proposed date(s) yet? Jason, can you check with Sherbin to see if we can schedule it? I think if we use the pavilion in Henderson we wouldn't need tents. New to this but do you guys typically use one landing or let everyone decide which they want to use?
I know, I am full of questions but once I find out how it all works I'll hit the ground running!
Finally got a chance to stop by a grab a couple pictures of the pavilion and the park in Henderson. I think it would be the PERFECT place for a gathering!Attachment 179966Attachment 179968
Does the park have RV hookups (at least water and electric) in case us Yankees might want to come and stay overnight.
I might would come if there was an RV park nearby.
I just spoke with the Mayor of Henderson. He said there are no RV hookups at the park but there is a really nice RV park just 5 minutes from the park and the marinas. You can check out the RV park by clicking on this link: Cajun Palms RV Resort
If I get an idea of how many might be interested in bringing an RV I would be more than happy to call them about special rates if available.
Also, we really need to narrow down the best date for the meet so I can reserve the pavilion in advance. Since I have plans that I cannot break on March 21 and I am the first to through a date, how does March 28, 2015 sound?
Since this is my first, do you typically work with one marina?
Buster....here is just one of several campgrounds close by.....more info later..
CG= campground
RA=rest area
BL=boat launch
FA=fishing area

Mr. Bruce, I used Google Earth and added a couple items such as launches, the park/pavilion, a couple RV parks and a hotel.

The pavilion looks excellent - nice job Chuck, thanks for the post. March 28 is good for me - I'll be there. Might need some tables and chairs. I can bring a couple of tables, and folks can bring their chairs. Working with one marina/launch isn't a big deal. I know at the Toledo Bend gatherings some folks launch at different places (even on the Texas side) and meet back later. Or, we can all launch at the same place.
Thanks for the RV park info Bruce and Chuck.
Right now March 28 looks good for me.
I will try to come down the Thurs before and stay the weekend. Maybe I can get someone to guide me around a little on Friday so I wont get lost.
Okay, I will call today to check availability for that date. I will also look around for tables and chairs and will report back. My goal is to get what is needed so you guys don't need to pack stuff here. I manage a couple business webpages so I may put together a "mini" web page as an extension on one of them (which will be free!!) with information and maybe some photos for folks who are not real familiar with the area. I can post links here so this would allow maps, larger photos, etc. Swampers said he will get with a local landing to begin making arrangements. He also said that the landing may have a few camper hookups but will let us know. Personally, I would like to have everything in one place if possible but that would require tents at the landing so I will not stop working on that possibility but I will let Swampers chime in on that idea since this is my first gathering.
We have a beautiful lake here and in speaking with the Mayor yesterday he seemed very excited for us to want to gather here. He is a great representative for Henderson who has fished Henderson and the Atchafalaya Basin his entire life as a commercial fisherman and is widely known for his Cajun hospitality.
And since this will be my first gathering I want it to be as inviting as possible so that I get to meet as many Crappie.com members as possible!
Henderson gathering would be about A 2 hour drive for me so I would come for a one, two or three dAY event and stay one or two nights. I would welcome any one showing me where to start fishing. I have fished the other side of the spellway but never the Henderson side. What ever ya'll decide I'm for it. See you at the bend.
First....I say we lock in the March 28 date......I see 5 or 6 saying they like that date so lets lock it in....any objections??
next...in post #14, Swamppers mentioned the possibility of using a "Hall".....I assume it would have tables, chairs & restrooms....a kitchen would be a plus but not required.....if so, I think it would work better than the Pavilion.....Swamppers, could you or Chuck get some pictures of it....an enclosed building would be perfect for being out of the weather as we usually have wives and small children in the group....
next.....the weighing in for the one big fish is usually handled by one person who normally volunteers to do that....usually folks are not limited by one landing and I think that's the best.....ie, it is not like a weigh in at a big bass tournament .....it is pretty much very informal.....we would need a place to clean fish....the two other places we go have fish cleaning stations at the launch....any suggestions for that....
Swamppers & Chuck.....I would be glad to drive over and sit down with you guys and hash some of this over....maybe do a lunch....any one could come.....my main concern so far is the location of where we get together after fishing....if it rains (or snows), we do not want to be getting stuck in mud around the landings....all the landings I have seen are over the levee with a small grassy area for parking....
again, thanks you two for jump starting this off.....really appreciate all your efforts.....let me know how I can help....
March 28 works for me too. I am also available to assist if needed.
Very good Bruce. The "Hall" is a good idea. I see that what we use at the Toledo gatherings has spoiled you :).
Swamppers & Chuck - I'd take up Bruce's offer to come over and help you guys. He knows how these are put together.
I will check with the city about the availability of the hall and will try to go by to get pictures either today or tomorrow. Henderson is a very small community, I called City Hall yesterday and left a message but have not received a return call yet. The "hall" may be the best bet now that I think about it as I think there are tables and chairs in the building already and there is plenty parking all around the building. I have not spoken with Swampers for a few days now, apparently he thinks he's a duck hunter now:Rofl, but I am sure he will chime in soon on his ideas and feedback.
