I shoot Kent FastSteel 3" #2. Its not cheap, but it works the best from my 870. Federal bluebox steel, not so much, they are crap in my gun.
x2 on the Kent. One of the ag fertilizer places here in town had a retail side they just recently closed down. Lots of stuff went dirt cheap and at one time they had the Kent's for around $9 a box on the 12ga steel. Wish I would have caught it earlier and would have bought all they had. I have shot the Kent's for years now and really like them. I still shoot regular ol' 3" shells and never seemed to have a problem killing ducks along side guys shooting the high dollar 3 1/2". Hawks over in your neck of the woods used to have good deals on them as well.
Fort Thompson has Federal 3" for 99.99. I have shot before and there is nothing wrong with the shell.
Mack's or Fort Thompson should be running sales about now.
Federal has always been a "dirty" shell in the heavier loads for my experience. I shot Kent's until they got up near the $150/case range. I shot Xperts for a while and then we couldn't get them. Fiochi's last year, but man that shell throws a fireball out the end of the barrel. I'd shoot some more Fiochi shells if I could get them for $100-$110/case.
Hawks used to have a lot of stuff and be really competitive on most items. Seems like they don't try to be competitive any more.
Nimrod, I did see online that Mack's had Xpert's for $109/case. That may be what I get, just thought there might be a store along the way of my route throught he state that would be worth stopping and picking up 5 or 6 cases for a decent price.
5 OR 6 CASES! !!!!! MUST BE A TERRIBLE SHOT! !!!!! LOL HOW MANY THOUSANDS ARE U PLANNING ON KILLING! !!!!!
Check Rogers sporting goods. Usually have fiochi's on a deal.
Ha meathead he uses shells like you use minners lol
Jerry, you ever been in on a good conservation snow goose hunt? LOL.
Hate to hear that about Hawks. I used to get over that way quite a bit because they had the best deals around. Haven't been over there in probably 4-5 years though. Seemed like they were always the "Grizzly Jig" of hunting stuff but I will say that the customer service was always much better at Grizzly. Hopefully they can turn it around and continue to do well.....Blytheville is like Kennett...they need places like that to stay!!
I saw a sales brochure for Roger's Sporting Goods and it looked like they had some deals going on. Thinking about getting some fiocchi myself.
I did a lot of business with Hawks for a long time. Now you walk in and it's like they don't care if you are there or not. They don't stock up the store like they once did either. I thought maybe it was just me, but used to during duck season, you could hardly get in the door and there was no parking. Now days, you can park pretty well right up front.
The Fiocchi's we shot were hard hitting loads. The only thing I didn't like about them was the fact of the amount of fire that came out the end of the barrel. The first time I shot right after shooting time started, it spooked me. I had to check the duck to see if he had flash burns!! As far as clean burning and knock down, the shells were good!
Also, Kents are free shipping at Rogers.
Attachment 179630 Kent check this out looks like some pretty good deal, Rogers with free shipping
i like the Xperts used em for years with no problem , 3" BB and 1550 fps
I looked those up this morning. I ended up with 3 cases of Fiocchi's in BB's 1500 fps. That will get the job done. Found those at $110/case. I got a buddy gonna pick me up 2 cases of Xperts from Mack's the next time he's there. Those 1 1/8 oz loads in 3" BB are 1550 fps. That should get me through until mid Feb unless we completely freeze out.
Roger's is hard to beat right now with the free shipping.
I'd much rather shoot some 2 3/4" #4 lead.............:biggrin
