Tough Day on Jordan, but Good Screenshots

We were glad to welcome seasoned tournament angler and crappie guide Freddie Sinclair onto the boat with us today. Freddie had not seen the Onix in action and had the day open, so he joined us on Jordan. We fished some, but it was more about technology and crappie hunting.

Last Tuesday, three of us limited out on Jordan. It was freezer day. We went to the same place today and nothing but barren water. The temperature had dropped nine degrees and the fish have gone much deeper. We caught a couple of throw-backs, but didn't seriously fish today. It was more about screenshots and trying to figure out how to follow the crappie as they transition to their wintering grounds.

The screenshots below were all taken today. As you can see, the water is a lot colder and fish deeper. We didn't buy any minnows, so it was jig-only today. We will go back to some of the areas in the shots below and see if we can catch any of them.

Thanks a lot to Freddie for a very good day on the water. He helped us better understand what kind of fish we were seeing on the screen. We all agreed that the most important thing is there are literally tons of baitfish. Lets hope we have an average Winter and all the shad make it through. Enjoy the screenshots.

I think those are crappie on the drop-off under the baitfish. Sorry the 2D is way too hot.

JL, what you need to do is drop a jig down there and watch them come up and follow and occasionally hit it. When you see them come up to it, you can call your shot- "I feel like I am going to catch a fish". That really ticks off the guy in the back seat.

I remember several years ago you and I think it was Cratageous talking about seeing fish come up off the bottom and hitting your jig. After reviewing the pictures on the computer tonight, I realized there are more crappie under the schools of bait then I could see on the boat. Next time out we will work on slowing down and figuring out how to catch those fish.

Those are AWESOME shots!! It would be cool to watch them come up for a jig, like Chief said. It'd be sorta like the ice fishing guys do with their Markum units. You don't suppose maybe some of those fish under the bait are bass do you? Well I guess the pro you had with you knows the difference. I once did the same thing with an inshore saltwater guide on a non fishing day. Just rode around, marked fish, and learned a lot. Of course that was before SI and hi def DI, all we had to work with was 2D. Anyway, totally rad screenshots. Keep 'em coming!

Reading your post and thought I'd share this shot. We were in a school of White Perch and I caught one jigging a spoon. My buddy said he watched me catch him on the DF. This is the screen shot. You can see the jig moving up and down, the fish hit it and me reeling it in. I would raise it about 8 or 9 feet with the rod, then reel back down and lift again. You can see the pauses as I reeled down and then lifted again. Pretty cool to see it all on the screen. This was last winter as evidenced by the water temp.

Yall had one of the best with you

SeaRay--thanks for adding your picture and comments. I'm hoping the pictures will help those interested in being a better fisherman. I appreciate all comments, especially about what is being seen in the screenshots. I'm still not sure what all kinds of fish are being seen--crappie, bass, catfish, perch, stripers, etc. Charles and I will be working in the coming weeks to see if we can solve the puzzle of what we see on the screen and what kind of fish is underneath.

Hoped I did not highjack your post, I just thought it was cool to actually see what was going on. The only way I knew they were White Perch is that we were catching them, but they are predictable and 9 times out of 10 I know they are Perch. Now we occasionally get surprised with a big catfish, striped bass or Largemouth that was mixed in, probably feeding on the perch. My buddy actually caught two LM about 4 lbs. each that ate the White Perch he was reeling in.
I am installing my LS transducer so I can do SI on my HDS touch 7. Have to let it warm up a bit though, cold here in SC.

Thanks for the info. You're definitely not highjacking the post. One of the reasons I am posting these shots is so that all of us that fish Jordan and other lakes can begin to identify what we are seeing in the water. The Onix and 360 make for clear images, but anyone with a basic fishfinder can begin to understand what they are seeing and go after their intended fish.

Great shots. I am afraid, as someone who has quite a pile of money in his humminbird finders, that anything that is not an Onix, is pretty much now a basic fish finder. Way ahead of this mess I got. Thanks for posting what it's suppose to look like. :banghead
