Eight-year-olds' first deer!! Atticus showed off this weekend!
Our camp has a rule that a doe must be killed before a buck is allowed. Well, eight-year
old Atticus got his doe, which happened to be his first deer, out of the way yesterday and then this morning went on to kill an 8-point buck
and immediately dropped a 5 point that had walked out a bit further down the lane and was just a little too slow getting out of the way....he made a slight hesitation after the first deer dropped and Atticus thumped him too!
That made two bucks and one doe in two days.....three shots = 3 deer! All 100 +/- yd perfect neck
shots with a .223....on semi-moving deer!! Several hundred practice rounds at the range since he was
5 years old have certainly paid off......that boy can shoot! His gun was a customized
Bushmaster Predator .223 with Valdada 2x12x35 scope shooting hand loaded 60 grain V-Max
Ballistic Tips that he helped load (Atticus seated all the bullets himself). That gun routinely
shoots .3 to .4 inches and has put a 5 shot group into .23 inch with that particular load (the shooter just happened to be
having a good day)!! Per G&F regulations, Atticus was the only one on the trip who had a gun and he handled it totally by himself and with excellent safety the entire trip. His persistence, self-control and patience have paid off and I am very proud of him.
