Great day at Nickajack.

It was past time to check out my crappie spots at Nickajack.....well they are there! Started fishing at 9:30 a.m. Got a limit of crappie with only one fish being 12 inches and all the others at 13 inches. I made a decision after catching my first four crappie...which were all at 13 inches.....that I was not keeping anything less than 12 inches. For those that know Nickajack it produces slab crappie. I caught fish all day. I was not culling because I was using a stringer. If it wasn't 12 inches back it went. The crappie were holding tight to cover at about 13 feet depth. All fish were caught on a Bison colored Trout Magnet using 2# test line. It was almost some specie of fish each cast. The bass and Gills were in there thick also. Didn't keep track of the Gills but caught a bunch between 7-8 inches. Caught 10 large mouth like in the pic....caught a lot more large mouth in the 10-11 inch range also. Those bass were quite a struggle with the 2# test line. Had one bass that was way too big to even turn. He just kept running and my line cut in the rocks. I was beginning to wonder about my decision to throw back fish smaller than 12 inches at about 3:45 p.m. I needed two more fish to get a 15 fish limit. In the next 30 minutes I caught 3 more crappie....two were at the 13 inch mark and up the hill I came at 4:30. I will be fishing Nickajack for most of November and up through December. It looks like it is going to be a great two months of crappie fishing just as it has been in the past 3 years since I started fishing there.

That's a good day. I like your measure stick, where did it come from?

Skeet that is a "Hawg Trough" from HOOK1 kayak fishing gear. I like it as it lets one get a perspective on the size of girth also. At least IMO. Kayak guys use those for their bass tournaments.

Nice catch. Like that measuring stick. Have heard about those trout magnets catching crappie. Checked out there web site. They have all sorts of stuff there. Thanks for the report.

Thanks guys. I fish the Trout and Crappie Magnet almost exclusively for crappie......Gills...Smallies......white bass....and Kentucky's. I even catch walleye on them. I catch a lot of crappie during the fall, winter, and spring....using only 2# test line. It is not that I am that great a fisherman.....I have found spots that produce year in and out and have been doing so for years....and the Trout and Crappie Magnet are great lures. The funny thing I find about crappie....but different lakes also.....is the bait a crappie wants in one lake and not another. When I fish below the dam at Pickwick the crappie are all over a Midnight Blue Crappie Magnet and it is about all I use there. Yet at Nickajack they do love the smaller Trout Magnet in the Bison color. Even though I filet my fish I cut open the stomachs to see what they are eating. The fish I catch at Nickajack more often than not have been feeding on little black worms almost the same size as a Trout Magnet. Have been on the forum a few years and really learn a lot on here. Don't know if you remember or not about two years ago I think my brother and I were fishing behind the wall and you were sitting on the rocks around the fourth light pole down and we were in the corner. you were killing the crappie us not so much so my brother decided to come down and ask what you were doin different. you told him it was the 4lb test line and you were using the midnight blue crappie magnet, you gave him a few and we left to go to Roger Gants store to get 4lb test line. We both ended up buying new rod and reel combos with 4lb test line, came back and started catching a few crappie still didn't have it mastered as you did. We really appreciated your advice and kindness and willingness to share your technique with us, I have since ordered every color they sell and my favorite and best catcher has been the orange and chartreuse. My brother lives in savannah and preaches at Living Word Fellowship, he catches them behind the wall all the time. I live 2hrs away in dyer county but do get to come down every once in a while to fish with him. Again thank you very much and Gob Bless:)

Yes I do remember...... you're welcome and it is always my pleasure if I can help someone catch fish. Midnight Blue has always been a killer color down there. Pickwick has not been too good to me lately. But in the past it seems the crappie would not move in there until mid November. I will be trying down there once a week to see if they are in there. Meanwhile if the past years are an indication should stay on them at Nickajack for a while. Glad you are having success with the light gear. I really enjoy UL fishing. So do you mainly bank fish? I use to do it all the time and did well doing it. Now that I have a boat I never do it. I think you get more into it when you bank fish as you have to catch what is there and can't move to a different spot real easy. So instead of moving you try different things. Looks like you do well.

I have a couple of fishing kayaks that I use quite regular. But I do a lot of bank fishing. It took a lot of miles walking and looking at lots of maps to find my spots. The work paid off and my catch rate went through the roof when I started using Trout and Crappie Magnets along with 2# test line. While I prefer those two lures I tell people all the time if one starts "Thread Lining" they will put more fish in the boat no matter the jig of choice. Absolutely love UL fishing.
