Only Three
To fish where I was today you have to get an early start. Anyone who has had a good day there always does what it takes to get there first. I left the house at 5:15 alone, as not many people are nuts like me and get up that early when it's 38*. Got to the ramp, post biscuit, as the second boat and got ready quick cuz I knew where they were going. The sun hadn't begun to light the sky, thank God for GPS. I ran past the first boat to launch to where I wanted to fish and they pulled in right behind, realized they were second and moved on to plan B. Water temp was 65 and the bass were beating up the Shad pretty good by the sounds of it. As usual it was after the sun had got up some before the fish moved through and over an hour before the first fish came to me. It was one of two throwbacks of the day. Fish showed deep and I set up the deep jigging poles and put it on their nose, but nothing doing. Later a school of Shad came though with lots of fish symbols in it and I grabbed the 6'6" - 4lb rod and threw a dose of Monkey milk over the side. A fair cast and let it fall with no telltale twitch in the line so I moved away from the structure and let the jig drag. THUMP and set the hook and I knew I had what I came for. 1lb 14oz and 14 1/2". For a few years I had lived closer and my job gave me Tuesday mornings to myself, and many of them were spent right where I was today. My personal best came from here, both day and fish. I have a little history here, and made some friends chatting with some of the folks who fished here on the days I didn't. I was in a super mood when that first one came into the net. Whenever I could find that school of shad I had a better chance of connecting, and two others joined the first though not quite it's size. I rolled up for the last time at 10:30 and called the folks who were looking to fish where I was who were close by and I headed home. The other two weighed 1lb 5oz and 1lb 9oz, and the pics tell what I can't. I don't see many filet's that size. The wind was light and it never warmed up over the mid fifties, but it was comfortable and easy to control the boat, and the fall color is coming on in fine style. If you're only gonna get three fish for the day it sure helps when they're as big as these were. The other lake I fish that's close to home just doesn't produce fish this chunky or big and it's been the best part of 2 years since I have had a day like this. Maybe an early Christmas present. Thanks for taking the time to read this.......Skeet.
