Spider Rig equipment basics

Hey guys,

Got some questions for you all about the equipment you use to spider rig. First Im running an older champion so two in the front of the boat is out so I am planning on fishing 3 poles up front and 3 in back. What rods to you guys recommend that wont break the bank? Thinking I want 14ers but could be swayed. Next what rod holders do you all use? Thinking I want something that is detachable but the mount could stay. I bass fish too so something that is pretty flush to the floor. Thanks in advance guys, I have been coming down crappie fishing in MS for a few years but never with my own boat. Figured I would come straight to the experts and ask.

Smoker -

I spider rig out of a Champion 1998 190C and use the following equipment:

A. Two Driftmaster T-250H's - ordered direct from Driftmaster.com (The pole and T are removable, therefore all that remains is the base)
B. Two folding chairs with cushions (from Wal-Mart) (5.99 each)
C. Six Tournament Choice 12-footers from Academy ($19.99 each) with Mr. Crappie Slab Shakers from Dick's Sporting Goods ($19.99 each) Note: The reels actually came off a combo setup from Dick's Sporting goods and when I'm not using the reels with my 12-foot poles, I use them on the poles they came with which are 10-foot.

I have fished with better quality rods and reels and agree there are significant differences, however I haven't had any issues with my "cheap" gear. I've caught plenty of other species of fish to include a 18-pound spoonbill (snagged it) with my spider rig setup and I can't complain.

spyderlock rod holders for sure I am learning the spider rigging along with you but the racks are awesome also I like the 14 foot b&m trolling rods next on my list is the Mellinium seats EZ POLEHOLDER has check them out in the member sponsor classifieds

Get you some 12 ft Pinacle Limit rods from Grizzly Jig. 4 for 60.00 and can add more for same price each. If you have some Baitcasters laying around use them. Don't know many bass fishermen that don't have some extra reels.
If you want quality holders PM E-Z Poleholder here on the board and get some of his Spider Lock holders. They are the best made today. Stand attaches to base with two bolts that have knobs on them. Remove in about 30 seconds.

What does he get for a rod holder? I looked at the review and they look pretty nice!

The longer lengths help when fishing shallow water, other than that you can fish with just about any length.

Been a ton of fesh caught on 12 foot rods, nothing wrong with 14s or 16s or even 18s if you have the boat for them, longer boat makes it easier to handle longer rods. I can name a bunch of folks that have their double seat set up back further in the deck, doesn't have to be as far forward as the single seat pedestal mount is now in your boat.

Get you the millenium set up from Ez.. I use both 14' C&C's and 16' PST poles trolling. Just depends on how I feel on what I use. I have a 1860 War Eagle and I love it! Added a Terrova this past winter an it's truly the cats meow.

I don't know for sure but you can call him. I know he gives a crappie.com discount. I have 2 sets of 12's and a set of 14's. One set is the Pinacals and I use them on a regular basis. Like Ree's said, have caught a lot of fish on them and the price is right.

I like these rod holders, but there are lots of good ones out there. Attachment 177839

The Capps and Coleman's are my favorite.

I get by with ht panfish specials and Cumberland crappie rod rack

Thanks for all the replies guys. I have an 18ft boat so i think I may just with the 12fters they seem to be cheaper. I am undecided on the rod holders yet, I think the spyder locks alot, but thats a lot of dough for 2 rod holders. Maybe ill buy one now and one closer to spring lol

Most of the guys on here a year or so ago used to preach about how nice the Hi Tec rod holders were, and they do work really well. They are the least expensive aluminum rod holders out there. They run about 85-90 per rack for a 4 rod holder, and that's new. You might find someone selling a set for much less.

The Tite Loks run about 100 each for a 4 rod holder for the 5840's and about 125 each for the 5841's which has a wider T bar.

I agree with Bill but check the price with EZ, you will find its in line. Then look at the different holders and make up your mind.
I try hard not to say one is better than the other but just what I use and why. I can say out of what I have tried the SyderLoks are what fits my needs the best, if not it wouldn't be on my boat. Will that change, not sure, time will tell.
The Millennium seats are awesome as well, I prefer the Saltwater version.

Don't go cheap......you'll wind up doin it several times, so how 'cheap' was it?? EZ's stuff is quality and in line with price vs quality. I know....I run them on my boat. Looked at several then decided to do it right the first time. Haven't looked back. I have 12' and 14'. Really like the 14's cause they're newer..lol. Both work real well. About any old bait caster reel will work jus fine. You can get stewpid on reels, but for riggin all they do is hold line anyway.

Yeah i plan on just getting some cheapy spining reels used the baitcasters before and wasnt impressed! I am putting together a christmas list now so it'll be a bit before I get all rigged out. The girlfriend wants to buy fishing stuff for me, talk about making a guy nervous. What happens when she shows up with the wrong stuff? LOL

I've got the Hi-Tek rod holders and have never had an issue with them. Simple and effective and the best value on the market.

If there's any chance you might use them to pull, I'd not go with the hi-teks. I have issues with my rods jumping out of the front part of the holder. Now spider rigging, I love them. The poles come out easy for quick hook set and never hang on anything. I love EZ's design for pulling and his mounting hardware.

Never have done any pulling normally just spider rig in the spring 3 or 4 times a year fill the freezer then switch to bass fishing. That could all change though!

On the poles go ahead and buy u some goodpoles you regratt it! !!! For just spiderrig I use 16ft bgjp b'n' m or if u want a rod to pull with I use the 16ft pst from b'n' m these will work for both spiderrig or pulling! !!!!
