Not sure where Harker Heights is. Good luck on getting the fish!
I don't even know what state It is in!!!!!!!
Never heard of that either so tell us where that is??? I am on Toledo Bend on the very East side of Texas. Also if they are not here or at Rayburn which is about 25 miles away, then I am not catching!
so how is the bite on Toledo?????? and rayburn??? went to Livingston today and very slow!!!!
I am not sure where Harker Heights is either E&E. A general area? Best of luck to you though.
thanks skip!!
Spent a few years in the Harker Heights area serving in the Army at Ft. Hood! Wasn't really into Crappie fishing back then was more of a Largemouth and Wiper fisherman. Belton and Stillhouse reservoirs are both quality fishing for said species. I would look at Texas Game and Parks site as they list fish stocking and individual lake records for different fish on there and can give big clues towards were to start out.
Hi E&E,
You will be about a 45 min up the road from me. As Skinner80 mentioned, Stillhouse and Belton will be near by. I have not fished either, but have friends who do. Stillhouse seems to be popular with friends. Belton has Zebra Mussels so you will have to take precautions if fishing this lake.
My home lake is Granger about 45 min south from where you will be.. It is known as a crappie lake, but this year was tough for everyone. I have only been fishing for crappie for 2 years, so don't do quite as well as some of the locals but locals have been very helpful. Hate to plug other forums, but Texas Fishing Forum (Crappie Fishing | Texas Fishing Forum) and GrangerGang.com will be helpful for Texas fishing.
Be glad to show you around Granger once you get here.

Hey Everyone,
Harker Heights is right outside Ft. Hood in Killeen. I will be stationed there while I finish up contract. I will be getting there the first week of February, just in time for spring crappie season kick off. I have small 12' Jon boat, that I will probably bring with me. I usually use Kalin's John Deer green curl tail grub. What do all of you use for the area? Sizes, colors, etc.
Really I can't tell much other than what I will be doing. Spring to me means relaxed fishing as I use a small 1/32 oz Roadrunner and fish it long lining. I just cast it out to the back and take off with the troll motor running some place between .4 and .8 MPH. Have been doing this for Fall and Spring fishing for crappie since the late 1970's.
I get the unpainted heads and paint and tie them myself. We do extreamely well doimg this, but I also make a ton of 1/16 oz jigs that guys around here do great with. My favorite early color jigs is Chartreuse/Blue/Chartreuse amd after the water clears a little the same will do, but also add some other colors to the hunt.
