Bald faced hornets!! At least that's what builds those in oklahoma. First good freeze and they will be gone. Flame thrower would work if you had one!
wait till it freezes.
Get this: Raid Wasp & Hornet Killer - Walmart.com
Wait until it the sun sets, (getting dark), spray the nest liberally with spray.
By waiting until "dark" the wasps have retreated back to the nest for the night.
Check the next day for flying hornets, if none knock down nest and you can dig a hole and bury it.
Simple! Just invite Billybob over and tell him its a pinata.
Heavy Frost and there still could be a few survivors.
A buddy and I took one out of a tree with temps around 50 degrees. They could crawl, but they couldn't fly.
Okay, the pinata thing was really funny!!!
We'd wait til frost but it's in Charlie's favorite potty tree and fairly close to the shop too. It's hanging low enough that Paul could bump his head on it. Temps are supposed to get down in the upper 40's Friday and Saturday nights, so I guess it'll hang til then before eradication begins!
Let us know how it goes. Take video of Paul running away after the drop! lol
Good luck.
When it gets cold.....slip a garbage bag over it and tie it off then cut the limb. Then get rid of it.
If you want to save the nest for a decoration..spray a can of raid in the bag and tie it shut good. Then after a few days remove the bag and take the nest out and spray a couple coats of clear poly urethane on it. I did that and nest has been hanging in my shop for twenty years now and still looks good.
I live close nuff to go watch this from a distance. lol
i will be there
Take lots of pics
Be careful. They can put a hurtin on you. Paul must have found it, a little high for you to spot.:biggrin
They won't be gone away Vonna they will just go dormant in the hive! If it freezes in your area like others have said slip a garbage bag around it after making sure there is no activity around it. Seal it up tight, find the hole in the bottom of it through the bag and empty a can of hornet killer into it. Once you are sure all the hornets are dead, open it up and shellac it, they sell for a pretty penny sometimes for decor for cabins and lodges.
Ha Ha very funny! I'll have you know I saw it first. :yikes Good thing too, cause it's about head height for him. I don't know how long it takes them to build a nest because we were both out in the yard over the weekend and never noticed it.
When I was a little kid, my Dad got stung by a hornet at my grandpa's well house. It got him on the left side of his chest and he said it knocked him to his knees. I remember seeing the sting afterward and it wasn't pretty.
Happened to me on a golf course. Wasn't sure if I was gonna live. Felt like the wind was knocked out of me for about 15 minutes. Gasping for breath. No one around to help. Very scary. Finally made it in and called doctor. He nonchalantly said "sounds like you had a reaction". No joke.
I would have to have my EpiPen ready to stab just looking at the hive!
Hey Vonna....I have met Danny and guess what......you are taller than him lol
Same here Saltine.
My favorite tactic to kill wasp (should work on hornets too) nests is to load up a pump up sprayer with tobacco juice with some dish soap thrown in. Tobacco is a natural insecticide and the dish soap breaks up the surface tension of the liquid so that the wasps/hornets/bees/spiders absorb it quickly. I can knock them out of the air with it and use it to drench the hive. Just be sure to wear goggles or a swim mask and stand upwind.
Spectracide concentrate loaded into a backpack sprayer will knock them dead on contact. Fun to shoot them out of the sky!
Personally, I simply blow the hornets nets up with a shotgun and never look back. Two rounds of #8 birdshot works pretty good. Go out that evening and spray the carnage with a good can of wasp/hornet spray for good measure.
don't forget, i get the nest, after its cleared of the critters
pox go get it EARLY
Give billbob a blind fold and a golf club and tell him it is a Pinata !:Rofl
Worked for a tree service, and we were cutting down a THICK mulberry that unbeknownst to us had a hive in it. The limb it was on hit the ground and ruptured the nest. You never saw 5 full grown men MOVE so fast ! I got stung twice; 1 guy got like 8...we came back that night with 3 cans of Black Flag Wasp and Hornet Killer and liberally soaked what was left of it. Would bet what was left of it was 20" in diameter and it had had a couple hundred hornets in it, luckily most died when the limb landed on and crushed most of it. But the few survivors were EXTREMELY pissed off at 1st...
Call EB. He can pluck hornets like shucking corn.
Call CP, he can send Clyde in to get it. :ThumbsUp EB
Reminds me of a friend of mine who discovered one of these nests in the dead of wintertime and decided he was going to cut the nest down and place it as a decoration in his living room next to his collection of deer heads and fish trophies. Well he successfully cut the nest down and inspected it very carefully... and when he saw no hornets at all over about an hours time while the nest was outside... he came to the conclusion that the nest had surely been abandoned. He then proceeded to hang the nest in his living room... and after marveling at his new found trophy for only a few minutes... he and his wife left to go about whatever their plans were for that evening. When they came home later and entered their home... to their total surprise... the nest had warmed up and the hornets apparently came out of their dormant state. They said they saw... not hundreds... but closer to a thousand paper hornets swarming in their living room and aggressively attacking everything in sight that moved.
Waited til dark and temp was down to 49, so Paul went out and sprayed a whole can of wasp & hornet spray into the nest. They were trying to come out but they weren't making it far. Gonna douse it again earlier in the morning when it's even cooler.
don't mess that nest up.....ha!!!!!!
jus be careful, they hit you full speed and hurts like well really bad
How Rude to attack these poor dudes. There only doing what nature wants them to do. :hatchet: Hit one on the Kubota with the cab last year. Let me tell you it was not fun watching these fools trying to find a way in the cab with me.:popcorn I know they did not give up the chase for a mile. But then they turned back and I was glad. As I had to get off to unlock the gate and was not liking that ideal with them around.
Cousin of mine found one around 1979 and cut it down put it in his trunk of his car. Few days later it had gotten above freezing and he could hear this sound. Dumb butt opened the trunk and got stung 20+ times. But he never got one again without spraying them down and leaving it outside for a few days.:Rofl
Its Enid time in 7 days........................................
