I've caught crappie in farm ponds before but never cleaned the and ate them. We fished a buddy of mine's farm pond last night and caught a dozen nice ones. So I kept them and I cleaned them. My question is, are they safe to eat? I always here people say those fish are probably full of worms.
We eat them out of the ponds all the time. If they have worm you'll see them when your cleaning them.

I do but I also try to stray away from eating out of the ponds that actively have cattle that stand in them. Most of the fish that I have caught that I have seen worms in them were ones that cattle were around. As LBM says cook everything properly, honestly think some of the ponds can be cleaner fish that if you caught them out of reservoir.
This one had cattle in it!!
O- I can see the worms in the ones from our ponds in Tennessee when cleaning. Cattle ponds, by the way. Our one pond in the hay field without cattle only has bass (too many for the small pond; they've eaten everything else I think).
LOL it just boils down to your own personnel preference people are eating fish with worms everyday I am sure and still walking around fine. The worms would be in there guts that I have see not the fillet. Another thing to do to get rid of parasites is to soak the fillet in salt water in the fridge over night.....Quote:

I've cleaned Bass, Bluegill, and crappie from the same pond at the same time the bass and bluegill will have little yellow worms about the size of a piece of rice in the filet meat and I have never seen a crappie have one single worm, I'm not an expert and I don't know if they get them or don't but I personally have never seen a crappie with one of those worms in them and as for the ones that do have worms flick them out with the point of your filet knife or don't worry about them I've eaten them both ways with and without. As was said in previous posts as long as you are cooking them everything will be fine and probably would be OK if you didn't, but I'm cooking mine.
The pond I've fished before, I've seen them in bass but not crappie.
