You didn't say where on Lake Cumberland you are going and Cumberland is a BIG lake. I will just tell you that I have been catching nice crappie 20 to 22 ft deep on submerged brush in 25-30 ft of water and the deeper trees around the lakeshore. With the water falling, thousands (literally) of trees are being revealed around the banks and in the creeks. You just need to search the deeper ones. Also, with the cooler temps (especially at night), crappie should start biting much shallower. If you are coming in a couple of weeks, I wouldn't be afraid to try them 10 to 15 ft deep around the trees. I've been having my best luck on Bobby Garland jigs (chartreuse or pink) tipped with minnows, but tipping the jigs with crappie nibbles will probably do just as well.
thanks for all the info.
What's everyone's opinion on the best area on the lake for crappie?
oldbigun i would say you wouldnt get to many replies on the best area until after oct. 18th (tourney)
Gonna have to do some research. Like crappiepappy said it's almost a new lake with all of the new growth. I got some spots in mind. But I'm fishing the classic so mums the word!
If I don't have positive information, I tend to not reply to posts asking for info. But, as I think this through. its as important to know where and how to not fish, as it is how and where to fish. I live on the upper part of Lake Cumberland, have been fishing in the pm. I use various plastic jigs and don't tip with minnows or niblets. This week I fished on the main lake a couple of times and it is very clear. I fished three times in White Oak and the headwaters are green with algae. Each afternoon my fishing buddy and I would average five keepers and they were nice as in 12" and in White Oak threw back several non-keepers but not on the main lake.
For your information I consider myself a fair fisherman but not expert. I'm retired and don't push myself. I'll go fishing just because its a beautiful day
The fish were scattered, no pattern! In White Oak some were caught at 5' and some at 50'. and all in between. But they would hit the jig with authority, no sucking and nipping the tail. 1/16 was as good or better than the 1/32. No luck with the 1/8.
The water temp is 75 plus.
The only thing they would hit on the main lake was Lake Fork red with silver flakes and the only thing in the creek was Kiwi Bobby Garland and they wouldn't deviate from them. I'd never seen them more particular.
It's my feeble and unscientific opinion that more crappie are caught on Lake Cumberland at Fishing Creek than anywhere. Faubush Creek, North and South Fork are tied for second, North and South fork are usually hotter early in the spring.
This is not a glowing report, I know, but it is reality for me and the way I fish. If you wish I'll report any changes I find or any local gossip I hear.
good luck
fair weather
I caught 23 16 inchers down there yesterday they were caught between I wish and what a dream lol
Only had 3 keepers yesterday. They were caught between few and far between! Done a lot of looking and some fishing just not a lot of catching.
i'll be fishing the classic this month as well,i should have known better than to post here about fishing lake cumberland until after the classic, but by then it would have been to late lol.i have checked a few things about the lake and it seems to be the same(except for size)as a lake we fish here in middle tn.they are both deep and lots of blow downs, one big difference our lake(tims ford)has alot of docks and boat houses where lc doesn't,to us thats gonna be challenging, but we are excited about the opportunity and are looking foward to the trip, hope to meet some of you guys there, good luck and be safe.

the terrible pre fishing stories probably will be the truth this time.........lol
I too plan to be on Cumberland for about 4 days, 1 1/2 in preparation for the tournament. Gonna fish a lake similar to it in depth and clarity near home Saturday and just see how the fishing is here in Middle TN before we go up that way. Would love to meet any crappie.com folks I can up there. I am sure it will be a crowd, but we will do the best we can. :) Some my worse days ever was great compared to being at work instead. LOL
Look forward to it guys.
