Crankbait Question?

Hey guys, Do yall use snap swivels on crankbaits? Does it scare the fish or anything? If yall do what size do yall use? Thanks

I use the DuoLock Snaps. No need for a swivel

I've used these :

for crankbaits ... for decades. Mostly for casting cranks when Bass fishing ... and never had one open up on a large fish, or even when seriously snagged. And I use much heavier line/rods for Bass, than for Crappie.

I don't find swivels particularly necessary for trolling cranks, but I have seen them used .... and they seem to perform OK, and don't seem to be a deterrent to fish biting the crank. Personally, I believe they're used because that's what the people I've seen using them already had in their tackle.

I also have used them lately as they are lighter tackle than a barrel swivel clasp. I still use the barrel swivel clasp on bigger crankbaits over 2".

I use snapswivel's for one reason and one reason only... to avoid line twist on a fouled crank I may not catch twisting on me when trolling. Nothing too big or nothing real small will do the trick and don't hurt the bite on Bandits.. IMO.

I use a small barrel swivel to join my braid to my flurocarbon leader. My braid to flurocarbon knots were not holding up very well (probably my knots not tied properly) I Do get the Crappie spinning sometimes on top of the water, We call it a Whirly Bird, But I dont think it has cost me any fish that would not have got off anyway. We also use the fast Snap mentioned above on the crankbait itself.

I use a #7 locking barrel swivel with 30 pound braid in clear water and have been know to catch a few crappie on them.:biggrin

I use snaps, but no swivel. I change colors too often to tie them each time.

I use no# 7 swivels and normans speed snaps for the small lures such as arkies and johnson crappie lures.

I use snap swivels my partner ties his cranks to the line It seems to me I catch more I think the snaps whether swivel or not allow the crank to track true and be free more action when slow trolling my 2 cents

I usually tie my lures on but after reading this article and my failing eyesight I'm changing to a snap swivel.

The man who taught me to drag crankbait s. Said- never tie a 2 penny swivel to a 5$ crankbait. Use good ones.

blackfish, I was going to say the same thing.

Salmon fishing on Lake Michigan taught me that. 16 rods in the water, mutiple baits, very easily 300 to 400 dollars in the water at one time. We always use ball bearing swivels and ball bearing snap swivels.

On cranks for walley, we simply use the snaps. It seems to allow the bait to travel better (the proper wable) in the water. Put on side by side with a crank tied strait to the leader and you will be able to see the difference in the water.
