My BIGGEST fish EVER
What a surprise day. Tried for whites but nowhere to be found. Decided to bait fish in the deep water were we marked a lot of fish. Something started pulling a little on my line. Picked up rod ans slowly pulled back. I use circle hooks. There went the drag. Oh my. Told husband this is am real fish. A lot bigger than the 21 lb cat I caught a few years ago. It went down the river then up the river. Pulled some drag. Then it JUMPED. It was a big lake sturgeon. Finally after it taking a few rounds up and down river husband dip neted it. Well sort of. Half in net and hand around tail to get it in. It bent the net. Fter all the fight we quickly measured and weighed it then released to swim away. It was 5 ft long and weighed at least 44 lbs. probably more because husband couldn't get it completely off the bottom of boat even standing on front deck. And I FORGOT the camera again. Did take a few with phone. They didn't turn out to good. Don't have smart phone. Have stupid phone. Husband ended up catching a 12 lb one and I caught a 17 lb one. They were a blast. That one is going to be hard to top. I was just glad it wasn't a carp.

Have to brag on my Abu Garcia red reel, Ugly Stik rod, Bass Pro green Offshore Tightline mono and circle hooks. That offshore Tightline is some tuff stuff. Oh and night crawlers for bait. Watched a lot of the lake sturgeon jump out of the water today. Never saw that before like today. See the shovel ose do it in the spring but not lake.

nice! congrats on catching your personal best, ever. those lakers have some real power, long and strong!
-
Yep. What a challenge landing it. Half in the net and husband holding onto tail. Bent the net. Lol. They have a LOT of power in those tails.. The smaller one I caught slapped the crap out of his ankles before he could get out of the way. The length was the biggest problem.

Awesome as all get out, I seen a guy grill a sturgeon, he was on the television they were farm raised, do y'all eat the river ones, or just catch and let go.

From now on camera will in tackle bag. The lake sturgeon and pallid sturgeon are endangered so they have to be released. You can keep, the small shovel nose sturgeon. As long as they are 30" or under. Anything over has to be released. They are so slim built that there isn't much meat on them. We kept a couple but husband said they weren't worth cleaning. Hard to clean also. So they all get turned loose. Probably never happen again but I will be ready.

I had smoked shovel nose one time and it was very good, but I have no clue how it was cleaned or any other details, but it was good!

Catch of a lifetime there....congrats
