I'm about to buy a new outboard and wanted some opinions on how many horsepower to buy. I have a 1648 Xpress flatbottom and typically fish wish two other guys. We all way a little over 200 pounds. We fish mainly lakes but get in a few smaller rivers. I just want to make sure I have something that's strong enough to push us around 25-30mps.. I was leaning towards a 30hp but wanted opinion. Would a 25hp work? Thanks.
50 hp. No replacement for displacement. Anything less would be foolish.
I have a 50 four stroke on a war eagle 1548 wouldn't have anything less.
50 hp is the way to go. Never can have to much power.
One thing you want to look at first is the hp rating on your boat. Their is a Coast Guard rating decal on the inside of your boat. You need to stay within the limitations of that rating. Stay Safe.
My 16.5 ft Tracker had a 25HP Merc on it. Ran good and planed off easy, but top end was 22MPH with 2 in the boat. I just upgraded to a 55hp which runs about 35 top end, but cruises easily around 30.

I have a 1648 war eagle with a 40hp etec. It runs 35 with me and my gear and 33 with me and my buddy. Great motor and is made in the usa. It is not the fastest but very reliable. This motor will also run without a battery.
Most fuel injected motors will not.
If you put a bigger motor on the 1648 than it's rated for, and you have an incident, your insurance company may have an out. But, it will take a 50 to get the speed you want with that load. Don't know how safe it will be.

I have a 16' x 48'' Aluma Weld with aluminum floor rated for 80 and run 70. Used to run 90 but backed up when replaced because of reasons stated .
I have seen a lot of 16's with a 40hp, but you really need to look at weight being carried. 600# is pushing it for a 1648 IMO bigger motor is more weight and more fuel etc etc. Good luck and think SAFE!
Yamaha 4 stroke! The new models are like 10% lighter. I've abused a 2006 model duck hunting and stump jumping on Grenada. Been through 2 stainless props and never turned a wrench on it other than changing oil and lower unit lube. Ask birddown about her.
40 merc. 50 requires insurance. You may want it but the 50 requires it. Also I think the 40 merc can be pushed into 60 horses pretty easily. like in taking a restrictor out of the breather. May have changed that now but sure could in the past.Think there is a 40 running almost 50 mph on a boat in Louisiana.
The law states over 50hp had to have at least liability insurance. 50 and under good to go.
25 2 stroke Johnson on a 542 Wareagle runs 28.3, but speed goes away fast as you increase the load. I'm about 99.9999999 percent sure 28.3 is fast enough to eject a person in the right conditions. Kill switch and life jacket are a boaters best friend. This is your Boating Safety PSA. Now go buy the biggest motor you can afford. Hang it on that boat and let us know if it will blow your hat off.
I may have been wrong on that last statement. I had a pontoon years back that had a 50 and the lady said I didn't need it because the law states above 50hp it was required. I just read it and it said 50 and above. Sorry.
max hp that boat is rated for in a 4stroke. my preference right now would be a yami....
First 600 lbs of people is over load for that boat, and a 1650 express has a 40 hp limit so probably that for your boat too. Now my question is why would you put a boat on the water with no insurance?

There is a fellow here in Lake Charles has a Merc 40 tuned to 60hp and will do 63mph on an Edge 15/52. He races boats and builds motors. He does advisory for Edge and does tests on marine products. He says the new motor in 40hp to buy is the Tohatsu 40hp 4 stroke. He bought one the day after he did a test run. It jumps on plane like a 2 stroke. Remove the restrictor plate and its a 50hp. Everyone around here are buying them for the marsh. It pumps 26 psi of water pressure. There is a waiting list.Quote:

Insurance is dirt cheap on a boat. Don't let insurance stop you from getting what you want. If the insurance is an issue you probably should stay home and use the motor money for groceries. :)
I'm putting a Tohatsu 50 4 stroke on a new Tim Scott built 1656 Havoc boat today. They are great engines!!! I still sell lots of the Tohatsu TLDI engines also. Gonna be a fast booger!!!!Quote:

BTW, Tohatsu also offers a 4 Stroke engine from a 60-250 now. They are pricey as they are built by Honda. The New 40 and 50 4's are built by Tohatsu.
I would recommend a tohatsu 40 tldi. I have a 648 wareagle ldv. With me 200++ and 300 pounds of batteries I run right around 32mph. Good solid motor. Don’t mess around with trying to get more horse power out of a newer motor. Yes it can be done, but you are taking a couple of big risks. 1 you will lose your warranty secondly I have known plenty of guys whose motors have never ran the same after altering them. Just my opinion. Good luck shopping. BRM wont steer you wrong.
Oh and 600lbs may be overloaded for that boat but how many duck boats have you ever seen that has not exceeded the weight capacities. Pretty much put 1 dog, decoys, a gun and 1 passanger and your over the limit.
Oh one last thing this was number 1000. Still have a long long ways before I ever catch up with RCC and probably will never catch up with BRM.
