My experience is some brush will almost always hold fish. I usually catch some there, so I don't scan it, I just fish it.
Other areas have many trees or brush and I scan until I see fish on or near.
I might scan once and throw out 3 markers on the areas as I go over them (downscaning).
However, it is a sad fact that seeing fish doesn't always mean catching fish.
I caught 2 last time out. I SAW 100 + on the sonar.
I left early.
yep, marking and catching is a big difference. i've thrown everything i've got at a hole that was showing fish to end up with a pain from casting and no fish in the boat :dono
one thing i have notices though is when i've marked fish tight to cover they seem to be less active than when i find them scattered over and around it.
WHEN I GO OVER BRUSH WITH SI ,I GO AS SLOW AS BIG ENGINE ALLOWS,2 1/2 TO 3 MPH,WITH 998 SET ABOUT 60 FEET LEFT AND RIGHT,IF IT HAS MANY FISH IT WILL EASY BE SEEN,IF 3 OR 4 MAY NOT SEE THEM BUT IF BRUSH IS THICK THEN I WILL GO STRAIGHT OVER IT WITH DI TO SEE IF IT IS WORTH FISHING.IF IT IS A BAD DAY WHERE I CAN NOT SEEM TO FIND FISH THEN A GOOD PILE I MAY STOP AT FOR A FEW MINUTES AND STILL FISH,BUT KNOWING THE LAKE AND THE SEASON OF YEAR WILL DETERMINE WHERE I PLAN ON LOOKING,BUT SOMETIMES I WILL DO OPPOSITE OF WHAT THE NORMAL SEASON SHOULD CALL FOR LIKE GO SHALLOW IN HOT WEATHER,BUT I DON'T STAY LONG IN ONE PLACE WITHOUT A BITE,WELL IN WINTER I MAY STAY LONGER,DON'T KNOW WHETHER ITS I THINK THEY ARE SLOW TO BITE OR TOO COLD TO MOVE:dono
SLABBACK, AS U KNOW THAT IF U CAN SEE A FEW OVER THE BRUSH THEN THEY ARE TAKERS FOR SURE,ALSO WHEN THEY ARE TIGHT AND DON'T WANT TO BITE TO PUT ABOUT A 1 INCH JIG ON LINE AND DROP IT DOWN TO ABOUT A FOOT OVER THEM AND WATCH YOUR 2D TO SEE IF THEY ARE INTRESTED COMING UP AND GOING DOWN,MANY TIMES IF I HOLD IT STILL FOR ABOUT A MINUTE ONE WILL HIT IT AND SOMETIMES WILL START OTHERS TO BITTING,BUT AS ALL FISHERMEN KNOW ,WE LIKE TO TELL OF THE TIMES IT WORK AND NOT THE OTHER TIMES:biggrin
I don,t usually take many pic with 998 but here is a few, these crappies I found last fall ,was catching many off that pile but found it late and had to hurry up and leave to get cancer treatment each day 60 miles one way ,then got where could not go much then,a couple more pic if I can get it to work.can,t get it to work
These are clips from shots to go right into what I think you were asking about without all the other stuff showing.
With this tree you can see how the limbs and trunk come out but notice that you only see a few dot or returns I would take as fish. This spot would be marked for another day but left alone for now. (Notice this muddy or stained water shot compared to the other clearer water shots)

Here however you can see the trees along this drop and how the fish (dots) are stacked in and around them.

Genec talked about slowing the boat speed to pick up fish better in the structure. This is a shot of what he spoke of. You can see the limbs of the tree but notice how you no longer have the dots but more of a stretched out return marking the fish but still have detail on the tree.

slabback,good si shots,last 2 u slay them?
Here are a few shots, where I would actually stop and fish.
Crappie around a tree, hard to make out the tree but, it is there.

genec there may have been a keeper or two in the boat after hitting some of those places lol
Nice shot on that standing timber Redge, that loaded structure in that last shot just screams for a jig....:fish
Thanks Slabbacks, I love single poling standing timber!!
Man those look amazing!!! Keep em coming! How do you zoom in on the images on the graph without making them distorted? Thats what always seems to happen when I try to take photos like this. But I dont come across something like this that often either. Most water around me to fish is 10ft or less. Hard to get all that to fit in the down imaging cone at that depth. Do from time to time get good side images tho.
I would like to see a screenshot of this "distorted zoom box" that you speak of...
I'm wondering if it's the same issue I have with any software version above 6.310 on my 1197...

I agree with slabbacks ... Redge nice screenshots ... except one of the "readout boxes" is blank :Rofl
RDJJ if I am not mistaking, I sent those to you earlier this week without the numbers blocked off!!! LOL It is kind of funny how we were discussing the same thing earlier in the week!
Yes Redge, but I just couldn't pass that up. I wish you luck at Xkiller, if you go (not that you need luck). Stay safe it is really going to be "HOT"
LowePro I find that I do a lot of my scouting on the couch in front of the flat screen. 46" is way better than what the 898 can give rotfl
Open the shot in "paint" on the PC. I make a lot of recordings now that Greg put me on it, I then just watch and with the aid of HBPC and HV I can mark what I want to go back to and load it into the unit. Working in paint you will be able to zoom, crop and really help to pull stuff out.
This is from one of the shots I posted on page 1. I took the shot and went into paint...magnified and then zoomed in by cropping the area that interested me. I then re-sized it from 100 to 175. The tree keeps it's clarity and you can count the returns on what I think to be fish.

Also I think you may have given me something to make another SI Interp on for the other guys if it's something of interest. By doing this you can really pick a structure apart. Helps on ledges and points as well.
hope it helps
Don't forget though, these are SI shots that have been modified to help him ID fish like he was asking for in his post.
Minnow, sorry for side tracking your post on this other stuff.
Slabbacks, here is one.

This is similar to how I use SI while spider riggin...
I'm inspecting details with the 800kHz while I spider rig from waypoint to waypoint...(and my waypoints are close together)...
I only use 455kHz when I'm in unfamiliar water looking for new structure all the way to the edges of the screen...
Then I drop waypoints on those new structure marks...re-position the boat closer...and scan the new structure with the 800kHz so I can see the details of the new structure...
Rickie
Kosmo you can't ask for more than that, tons of bait, structure and FISH!! Nice shots
Only have a few SI shots but here they are.
Bean those are some toads!! Which shot gave them up?
Hey, Bean what is that in the picture above you on the right side? Thanks
Bean , the 2 lines that are running parallel with each other, an old road bed? Thanks
Looks like the mooring cables for a big dock or marina to me....at least similar to what we have here
To everyone thanks for the pictures. I hope the pictures will keep coming in and it helps to talk about them. Side Image has been hard for me to learn and understand what I'm looking at.
Great guess vic n. You guys are good. Wish i could ID things like that. My wife says that I need to pay someone to show me how to use the thing. LOL she's still mad about the $1,500 bucks. I have not told her about the new Minn Kota Terrova with foot pedal and I-pilot yet. HA HA
Rnvinc: I have problems understanding what I see in the picture. Have watched all the Tips N Tricks on YouTube. I have the HB598 SI and a new HB688 DI to put on trolling motor. Bigger screens may be better but this was the best I could afford hope these units will help. On the SI and DI are faint images & 2D always shows strong. Maybe just these 81 year old eyes.
Smaller screens definately are more difficult due to the size that structure is shown in the SI image...
A few things that can help...
*Anytime something looks interesting in the display...stop the screen scroll by pressing the 4way cursor...then move the cursor over that interesting item...and start pressing the + button on the unit face to open a "Zoom box" and zoom in on the item...
*Then press "Exit" until the zoom box goes away....
*While the scroll is still frozen...press "Menu" one time to open the Xpress menu...and change the "Si Side" selection to "Left" or "Right" side only...(this will, in effect, zoom that entire side of the SI image)...
*While the scroll is still frozen...change the pallette colors in the Xpress menu...(sometimes different colors show better detail than others)...
*While the screen is still frozen...Open the "SI Enhance" menu from the Xpress menu...and play with the Sensitivity and Contrast settings...
