Crappie fishing in the creeks running into the Ohio River is HOT!! Fish are in 8-12' of water, fish with floats and minnows around 4' deep around boat docks or laydowns. Yesterday I fished from 3:15-5:15pm, 2 hours, and caught around 40 crappie. Kept 21. Fish were between 8-12" yesterday.
Water temps were 43 degrees.

I am fishing above Meldahl dam. Close to the Maysville area, but farther downstream.

Sounds like your catching my fish. :D "Ha Ha" Just kidding as I live on the river just below Maysville and fish these creeks often. We went last weekend and caught maybe 20 and ended up cleaning 10 nice ones. Water is getting really clear and making it tough.
Any one here fish further south around the owensboro area?? New to the area and looking for some local knowledge not your fishing spots..
Do you ever fish Bracken creek for crappie? I fished there for 6 hours, Friday, after Thanksgiving, not a crappie. I caught 3 white bass and one largemouth on small 2" crappie jigs. This was my first time fishing Bracken.

I have fished Bracken creek many times although not any this fall. We rarely catch a lot out of there although I work with a guy who swears by it. Not saying we never do any good just not as well as other local creeks. My partner and I like the ohio side better. We fish them all though from above the Meldahl dam up to Crooked creek above maysville. Usually catch more on the wrong side of the river.:rolleyes: Bracken creek sure does have some nice cover though. Especially up the creek before you get to the R&R bridge mainly on the left side. Sooner or later we will get on them. We are probabaly done until early spring. What's your ride Bassky I'll keep a eye out for you?
16' HydraSport white with red trim, 115 merc inline 6 both are 81 models. Good little boat, just not enough storage space. Best thing is it is paid for.

I'll be in a 83 tracker (60 hp Merc) or a 14ft john boat (9.9). Keep a eye out for us. Same thing here they aren't pretty boats but they are paid for. MERRY CHRISTMAS !!!:D
With all of this warm weather this week and weekend, is any one going after the crappie this weekend?
I am planning on hitting the Ohio River early Saturday. I may go below Meldahl, sauger/walleye or fish the creeks for crappie. Haven't decided yet.

I fish around the markland dam area.Been doing real good with the crappie in the creeks.Got my limit last 3 times out in the last 2 weeks.Although alot of em are running pretty small.Have had 1 15in. and a couple 14s. been catching quite a few white bass mixed in.Some of them were over a pound.Man can them things pull for their size or what.I;m waiting for the cold water now so the sauger and walleye get stacked up.t These crappie lately seem like a good bonus.I'v had a few crappie come right up on top and hit my jig lately.I'v been catching them anywhere from about 7ft deep to 3ft. docks and trees.1/32 chartruce tube with power bait nibblit.I'm going tomorrow if it's not to windy.I'll post back in a day or two.Good luck

Are you fishing around Craigs, Sugar or are you on the Indiana side? I have never crappie fished or sauger fished in this area. Do the sauger stack up in the mouths of the creeks? What do you throw? Spoons, jigs, jig n minnow?

Bassky.I fish only the KY side. Yes,all the creeks in this area on the KY side,above and below markland dam.As for the sauger,sometimes I can find them at any of the creek mouths but not yet.If the water is low below the dam I catch them right below the gates when there closed but if it's up I head in to the creeks below the dam.I'v only caught one sauger so far.Still not cold enough.Alot of whites and hybreds though.FYI.Don't fish in the lock approach area below the dam.You will get a ticket.Oh,I will take minnows when I can get them,but red and white tube jigs or chartruce work good.1/16th in the creeks
1/4onc below the dams.4lb and 6lb stren.Sometimes you need minnows,other times you don't.I have had minnows with me and didn't have to use them.Good luck.
Tough day for me.20mph wind got the best of me after 4 hrs.Managed to catch about 20 crappie,only 7 would keep.Had 1. 12in. and 1. 11in.2 small largemouth.All came from deep docks.Good luck.
There was no fishing this weekend. I couldn't get anyone to go with me and I don't like going alone when the water temps are this cold. I did have to go down to the river Saturday. My buddy's BassCat with a 225 Merc, the starter gears tore up and he couldn't get it started. I had to go 7 miles below the ramp at Meldahl dam and tow him back to the ramp. He did manage to catch 3 nice smallmouth, 2 at 3lbs on crankbaits. Water temps were 43 degrees.

I didn't go out either although a coworker had good luck using a small roadrunner in local creek. He said him and his dad caught several 12 and 13 inch crappie.:D

hit the Ohio river today for my first attempt at crappie fishing a river. NO LUCK. I found some fish and some nice looking structure in 12 feet of water but nothing. Any help you guys can give on the ohio would be appreciated. I have fished for crappie in lakes and resevoirs. But that another challenge the military life gives you is fishing in new areas every couple of years.
I don't crappie fish in the river but the creeks and oxbows off the main river.
Just find some docks or trees or both and use jigs or minnows.start shallow and work deeper until you find them.Most of the time you will have to pitch up under the docks or in the middle of the trees.you will get hung up quite a bit.It's not easy fishing but if you work at it you'll catch some.Good luck.
My buddy and I went fishing from the bank of a local creek this afternoon. Fished about 2 hours and brought home 11 keepers. Caught numerous small fish and several bass. All were caught on roadrunners. As for fishing in the river for crappie, I have never tried it. But they are there I'm sure.:cool:
