Whats green and goes 70mph. Mississippi money going to Tennessee and Louisiana to buy lottery tickets. It never ceases to amaze me at the lame excuses people want to use to keep the lottery from passing in Ms. if it was here and you didn't like it then just don't but a tickey. No one is going to twist your arm and make you get one. One of the best examples I knw of happened in Alabama. Fellow ran for Governor with the idea of putting the lottery in place and if your child graduated with a B average or better for the last two years of High School you could go to college for free within the state of Alabama. He won. When it went before the local voters they turned it down. Now lets see College going up almost every Semester and --- You just told your child if you work hard in school your hard work will not be rewarded. have the perfect video for it. Show a young couple with a new baby then jump forward to a child at graduation. Have the parent tell the child. Well we didn't care enough for you to go to college for free so we voted against the lottery. Go on down to the gravel pit and work with your brother.----Some say that folks will be spending their rent money on tickets. if a person has that bad of a gambling problem they will stand on the corner and bet on the color of the next car coming into view.

You got my vote, but be warned, I am generally opposed to almost any level of government intrusion into the private sphere of peoples' lives. If you want to buy a lottery ticket and if there is someone selling lottery tickets, buying it should be your affair. If there is no one selling one and if want them sold, you should be able to sell them yourself whether any other people buy them or not.

When I first read the title I expected to see a fancy green bass boat.

The reason the lotto hasn't been passed in Mississippi is because of the casinos. They do not want anything cutting into their profits.

Interesting, and why would they be concerned about the casinos profits?

And they are willing and able to spend large sums of said profits to keep a lottery from happening.

Agreed Boar.. The money Ms is supposed to be getting from these casinos to improve the areas is a joke. Just come to Greenville. The roads are in shams and the area is and will continue to be poverty stricken.

No offense to you when I say this. I have heard that excuse before also. However if a pesron has two dollars in their pocket they are not going to dive to the casino and the person planning to go the casino and spend mega $$$$$$$$$$$ is most likely not going to spend the same amount of dollars on lottery tickets. Wife and I went to La today to see the great grandson. While I was there I picked up one mega lotto ticket. I would not have made a special trip over there to buy one ticket nor would I driver the 2 miles to one of the two casinos here in Natchez to gamble with my two dollars. However I would have went to the local stop and rob store to buy a scratch off or lotto ticket.

Thank you for spending your money in La, wish I could say it's helping to have the lottery.We have the worse roads in the US, physically our state has to look awful to tourist's with all the litter. They don't even pick it up before cutting anymore. I live by Hwy 190. This is named after President Ronald Reagan. He would not be honored by the litter. We are at the bottom of most list's. We do however, have a college tuition plan(TOPS). We were able to use it for one of my girls and it helped. Paid tuition and a small stipend for 4 years. However, the scholarship program she would have qualified for, before the changes was 5 yrs paid and a larger stipend(TOP 5%).

No offense taken at all, what you are saying is logical. That's the problem, not many use logic these days. The attitude here is different, that's why our casinos are located in backwater towns on the river or either on the coast. The folks kinda want it available but not in their hometown. The preacher might catch you coming out of your local snatch and go with some lotto tickets, but he ain't likely to see you in Tunica or Natchez. They don't even think about the Man above that sees and knows all. Anyhow the casinos do consider any other form of gambling a threat...lottos, dog or horse tracks, bingo, etc. You see, they are a greedy bunch and don't want anything cutting in on their cash cow. The casinos funnel money to politicians who get to thump themselves on the chest and tell their voters how they are keeping gambling out of their town, meanwhile they run to the coast for another "conference". It's all quite hypocritical. I really don't care if it's legal or not myself, I choose not to gamble, it bores me.

Phooey on casinos and a lottery. Just sumpn else for the government to ruin and our roads will still be crap and out education will still be on the bottom. Somebody bring me a big soapbox and I'll set y'all all on the enlightened path. A biggun now. Like Kdavid sized.

Got this from Channel 16 Tonight. It seems that since 1992 Mississippi has been able to put the lottery in place. However the Ms gov has been dragging its feet. Besure to read this and contact those that repesent you so we can get this moving forward.

Mississippi gas stations find ways around state's gaming laws

JACKSON, Miss. —Some gas stations are finding ways around Mississippi's gaming laws by selling what some call "lottery tickets."



Mississippians can play to win at any gas station in the state, and it only costs a few bucks. But there's a chance to lose big. Some people 16 WAPT's Tiffaney Bradley spoke to said they have lost hundreds of dollars playing the scratch-offs.

It may sound like the lottery, which is illegal in Mississippi, but store managers Bradley talked to said it's not.

"They're phone card tickets," said Jackson gas station owner Surender Singh. "They're not lottery tickets.

The state Gaming Commission didn't say much about it, but commissioners did say that the scratch-and-win game pieces are legal. According to the state's highest court, the long distance calling cards can give a cash prize to customers who buy them.

"To me, it's very similar to a lottery," said state Sen. Alyce Clark, who wants stores to pay taxes on the cards. "I think that almost every service station has them, but as far as I've been able to find out, the state is not getting one red cent."

Clark believes a lottery would help resolve the issue. In 1992, voters passed a referendum to allow the lottery in Mississippi, but state lawmakers have yet to implement it.

"We're still working on the lottery. It's just that we don't have enough people who are interested," Clark said. "I encourage each of you to encourage your legislator to become interested in the lottery."
