Worm food

When I feed cornmeal it will mold does this matter?

Are you feeding in a worm bed or just worms you purchased with which to fish?

Feed the bed maybe once a week with about 1/2 cup of meal for a 4'X4"X1' bed.

For store bought worms in a worm box don't feed them at all. Just check the moisture once a day to keep it from drying out and don't get it too wet or you will have worm-goo not worms.

I have 2 worm beds and 2 different kinds of worms the meal will always mold after I put it in there just wondered if it was ok or should I feed something else

Always used to use ground up cheerios when I kept worm box's in an old fridge.

If is staying there long enough to mold, you are adding too much.

Try using half as much.

I used worm magic for years then found a recipe that has worked very well for my 1,000 or so nightcrawler bin.
2 cups oatmeal
1 cup cornmeal
dozen or so washed and dried egg shells
Put in blender and run on high until powdered

To feed, I use a 3 tablespoons and make a line about about 1/2" wide across one end of the bin. This gets covered with a fine layer of shredded/pulverized lettuce. Within 24 hours almost everything is gone and the next day it is all gone. I feed every 2 or 3 days depending on how many crawlers I think I have. I was always told not to put too much food in as it can sour the soil which will kill your worms. The egg shell helps keep the soil sweet and provides grit for the crawlers to aid in food consumption.

every couple weeks I replace the bedding top 2-3 inches at the feeding end, My bedding is spaghnum peat moss and coconut coir about 50/50 mixture. Crawlers will eat the bedding and do well on it, but adding the grain makes them fatter IMO,

We used to feed them coffee grounds.

A buddy of mine used to use chicken starter like they feed chicks, he always had good beds.

Sounds like your watering after feeding. That is the issue, I feed on one end of the beds and water the other end. Then swap ends the next feed. But then again mine will eat a cup of corn meal per 24 hours.

My dear departed dad used to dump household garbage on his compost / leaf pile/ worm beds. Just remember potato peelings , coffee grounds, lettuce , fruit , vegetables ,and ect . Just no grease or oils and they will do fine.

I feed every scrap other than meat/fat/oil/citrus. Stay away from tomatoes, as they will start growing fast in the bedding.

Yowser if its that much fuss I will go grab a shovel.
