Considering moving to Kentucky.

I am getting ready to retire in a few months. Wife and I are originally from WV and have been in NC for the last 24 years. I will be in NC for another 2 years to complete training for my new job, but afterwards I am looking at moving to Kentucky.

Currently I am looking along the Louie B Nun Cumberland Parkway between Glasgow and London.

I like the Kentucky retirement allowance for state taxes.
My wife likes to Crappie fish.
That area will keep us within the 4-6 hours to both our parents in WV that we currently enjoy
It opens up a large area within 6-8 hours drive for my new career.

So for you that live in or are familiar with the area, what say you?

Any advise, suggestions or just plain information would be appreciated.

I'm a transplant from Tennessee, but Kentucky is home now! My home is in Northern Kentucky but I have a place at Kentucky Lake where I stay all spring and fall. The tax allowance on Social Security and other retirement income is nice, if the politicians allow it to last much longer. If you're 65 or over you'll qualify for a $5 annual resident fishing/hunting license which is great if you hunt AND fish. You ARE going to have to pay personal property tax on all your registered goodies, i.e. cars, boats, motorcycles, rv's. Those taxes are due when you register you're stuff each year, and can hit you pretty hard if you own new stuff. You are also going to have to make a wardrobe adjustment: All your shirts and hats will have to be blue! You will also need to develop a taste for bourbon, if you haven't already, and you'll have to be ready to sing a particular Stephen Foster song at the top of your lungs the first Saturday in May each year! Welcome to the Commonwealth!

Cause, the area you are looking at would be great for fishing Cumberland, Dale Hollow, Green and Barren Lakes. Property rates for buying a house should be good also. Since you are retiring consider any medical needs you or the wife may have and check medical doctors in the area. Lexington may be the closest big city for doctors. Not sure about medical staff in Glascow or Bowling Green.

Thanks for the information so far. All good information to be sure. The $5 hunting and fishing license won't help me, since I am only 47, hence the reason for training for a new job after retirement from the State of NC.

The medical treatment advise I really like, but again our current age helps to mitigate that for now.

The vicinity to good crappie fishing was one of the reasons that I looked at that location to start with. YouTube videos and crappie fishing lists all seem to center around lakes that are included in this area.

The proximity of the area, with the Interstate system is another reason. My new career will have me in a teaching capacity with quite a bit of travel. So access to the interstate system was a must. When I look at point of origin to destination points, that area opens up a tremendous section of the US within 6-8 hours because of the interstate system access.

Please keep the insight coming. With the nearness of the lakes in the area, what is the summer, winter cycle like with tourism. IE Way to many people in the area in spring, summer and fall and virtually abandon during the winter? Or pretty stable year round.

I too am a transplant but of Ohio. Infact I just returned from a week in Ohio where I did battle with the yankees and their roads. It rained every day but did find enough fair weather to work in a walleye trip on Erie. I live less than a half mile from the Corvette Museum and plant, and Beech Bend drag strip and amusement park are just across the river fom me. The tourists are actually great bunch of folks an are here to see all they can while here and town folks do their best to make them welcome. I mainly fish Barren, and heavily from mid October till the bobber fisherman begin to bloom in the spring. I have my best luck in the summer fishing the bridge pilings with lights at night and am trying to learn the art of pulling crankbaits. So would I do it again? Without a dout, no hesitation. We have but one question, does the name Calipari ring a bell with you? Let's not even mention the dirty birds to him! :) I trust you enjoy the art of "Front-porch-sittn" and drinking sweet tea, an should you share a porch with a fella by the name of Whiskers, I'd bet he'd share a clear licquid out of a mason jar.

cause,,,,,if your serious about looking for that perfect Kentucky Lake fishing place, let me know,,,,, My inlaws are selling off their Kentucky Lake weekend house to ready themselves for retirement,,,,It's a beautiful lakefront right down the road from Moore's Landing marina off Castle Rd....It's a double lot, 4 bedroom dual outside deck cottage type house with newer Lennox AC and heat unit just installed a few years ago,,,, It will have brand new vinyl siding put on this week.... best thing of all is those covered boat docks which has one of those float on poontoons dock which fills up with air takes your boat off the water....anyone interested , let me know,,, Illl actually be there for the next couple weeks cleaning and painting getting he ready for sale,,,,Gonna go cheap he told me so He doesn't have to carry it another year,,,,, so contact me quick if you want a killer lake house on Kentucky Lake,,,,I only wish my wife and I could buy this ourselves,,,, It is the perfect place if your a fisherman or lakeside retired couple for sure,,,,Andy at 901-619-8747 for more information,,,

I'd think Columbia would be a good location. Green, Cumberland and Dale Hollow are all just a short drive away.

I've been considering a move down there too.......The only way for your vote to count in Illinois is to vote with your feet.

Thats what hat I just did. I just moved from Millstadt, Illinois to the Paris Landing area of Kentucky Lake. Many of the people I knew up there thought I was crazy to leave the job and house I had but I had all I could stand. For the last nine years I worked in East St. Louis and last year two gangbangers killed each other in front of our shop. I feel like I've moved to a different world down here.

Life long KY resident except time spent in the Air Force, way back in the 60's. Suggest looking in the Russell County area (Russell Springs and Jamestown). There you will be .minutes from Lake Cumberland, then about an hr's drive to Green River Lake, Dale Hollow, Barren River or Laurel Lake. You're on Cumberland Pkwy there and mid-way from either I-65 or I-75

I didn't get far in life. I am about 40 miles north of where I started out. Tn has no state income tax and is a right to work state. I am near the KY border and I don't see much difference in lifestyles in either state.

Born and raised in Glasgow. I moved to Bowling Green for college, then north of Lexington for a short stint in a sales position before getting married and moving... Back to Glasgow. Cost of living here is AWESOME compared to most other places in the US, especially big metro areas and their suburbs. If you want a backwoods, no neighbors, "Lucky if there's a Wal-Mart & McDonalds" type place, any of the area you've mentioned is fine. Coming from the WV/NC direction (in order) Somerset, Columbia, Glasgow, and Bowling Green are the only places that I would consider "Cities" - everything else and in between is rural and farmland with small pockets of bank/shopping/post-office type stuff scattered in. The entire stretch of Cumberland Parkway is "God's Country" and the people are friendly - it's just a matter of deciding how close to 'city living' and the things that has to offer, you want to be.
