Danica Vise space age materials but lots of folks like it for the money http://www.amazon.com/Danvise-Danica/dp/B001NZNRBK

Thanks for all responses. I'll check all of them out.
I use a Nor Vise, but sell the best vise under $150 which is a Peak. Here is a study done a few years ago, but still good!

Do you have a fly shop in your area that carries vises you can actually look at? If so, go there and try them out for yourself. You don't have to actually tie a fly on them to see if they will work for your style of tying.
If that is not an option, check out youtube videos. Haven't checked on vise reviews but there is usually someone that has posted their thoughts or review on just about everything else out there so I'm sure they have vise reviews as well.
I live by the theory that a good vise is just one that does the job you need it to do. Sometimes the extra price spent is just for a name.
just my :twocents. Good luck and have fun!
A Griffin 3AR should get you in at just under $100. It's an extremely versatile vise. Its jaws rotate 360 degrees. Set them up horizontally to fully utilize the rotation.

You can be very creative with this vise to tie not only flies and jigs, but other alluring creations. The one listed here is a very good deal imo.
If you're happy with just jigs and flies, most vises from reputable makers should work for you.
X2 with Skip on the vise review. Here's another one http://www.flyfisherman.com/2012/08/...ly-tying-vise/
Check the fly shops and also check for fly tying clubs in your area - actually putting your hands on the vise even if you can't tie on it will help determine if it will be comfortable to tie on!! If it doesn't feel comfortable it takes the fun out of tying.
Here's a search for fly clubs in VA https://www.google.com/search?q=fly+...m=122&ie=UTF-8
I've got a Nor-Vise and the Apex and love them both
So the danica is a better choice than a griffon spider odyssey?
If you're leaning towards the DanVise it's on sale right now at J.Stockard for $80. http://www.jsflyfishing.com/danvise?...m_medium=email
I did leave out that I also have a Renzetti Salt Water Traveler which is a very nice vise, but over $200 and probably some place around $225??? The Peak which you can buy a lot of places all at the same price because that is controlled by Peak. It's a darn good rotary vise, but if someone wants a fixed vise Peak makes a good one and many tiers started off with. Thompson AA I think it is. I love the rotary part so I can rotate it around and see all sides and even tie some upside down as some patterns use for at least part of the tying. Do what you want, but a better vise is going to be easier to sell if you don't like tying and if you do then no need to upgrade anytime soon since you start with a good quality vise.
That is just my way of seeing things and maybe yours is different and that's fine. Get what you want or you will never be happy with what you have. I do tie on y Nor almost 100% of the time. I started off with a Danvise and used it a lot for one year, then bought my Renzetti. However when I saw all the advantages with the Nor I bought it after 2 years of tying. So do what you feel is best for you and if that is spending a little more than you want, just save for a couple months and get what you want!
just looked and the SW Traveler now is $239.00, but there are several versions and this is what mine is at now. I think maybe I paid something like $190??? Oh and to keep everything right I also have a second Nor-vise that is still brand new and I don't use it. I have it with a board base to move around if I choose, but also just bought a set of "C" clamps for it if I need to send in the one I use all the time. Last time that happened was not long ago and I had thought I could just take that vise and use it with the clamps I already have, but that was not to be since the vise stems are made different. I should have already knew that, but didn't!
I have also gone to bass pro in the fly tying area. They will sit down, show you how they work and let you try it if you want. Was very helpful to me.
the dan vise is a great option i have one of these as a back up to the renzetti traveler vise i got. i have has regal and a few other cheap one the tera tool silverado is not a bad vise see link.
