Opinions on what unit has the best detailed down scan images. Is it lowrance? Is that good as it gets?
"The best" image is purely ones opinion. I am very satisfied with the images on my Lowrances, while others may think they are terrible. It all boils down to personal preference and finances when it comes down to buying fishing electronics. My $.02.
Now Brett...you've owned almost all of them...(even the Garmin you've recently purchased)...
That gives you an advantaged opinion over all of us who have only owned HB or Lowrance...
Which do you think gives the best detailed down scan images...??
Rickie
SOUNDS LIKE A LOADED QUESTION AND I DO NOT WANT TO BE THE ONE WHO IS SHOT AT:Rofl:dono
Its the one with a dedicated DI crystal in the transducer...hope that narrows the field...LOL
Ok justin, ill go first.i have not seen a picture from brett, that I have considered a quality ds shot.that being said,I have seen several quality ds shots that justin has posted.also I have posted quality di shots:Rofl.(its just the internet, right):Rofl
:RoflBeings this is only the internet, and internet feeling really don't count as acuall real life feeling I will add this, the same thing gos for sc/si,brett seems to be way below the curve with the pictures he's posted:Rofl
I tell you what,
The best I've seen personally are lowrance lss2. The best I've seen online by owners are the lowrance lss1 with the 8 unit, what ever it's called, and those onix pics and some hb 998 pics, IT'S SETTLED!
Brett..........Like I said in my first post, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I know Kosmo wouldn't trade his birds for Lowrance and I wouldn't trade my Lowrances for birds. Well.......... with enough cash we might work something out :Rofl. Work on your settings and td set up and I bet you will get the images you want.:cheers2
I have taken some good shots on 998,but I have seen some great shots on lowrance and the onix,we all must remember that over all we mainly post just the good shots and then the ones looking wonder why theirs are not that good, for some reason some shots are not going to be good, maybe adjustment but sometimes no mater how I adjust it ,they are not good, still learning and it takes and old dog a long time if ever:biggrin:dono
Where's the Garmin pix at? I'm having trouble finding them!
I have had HB 898, Lowrance HDS8, and Dragonfly. HDS8 is best.
Not sure about the new garmin or onix
Yea, what's the buzz on the Dradonfly? Hahaha
Garmin documentary soon.
STAY TUNED!
No one wanted to pay my price on Dragonfly so I kept it. Put it on console last week.
Hate the 2d but di is pretty good.
See my "got perch" thread for screen shot.
pffffttt .... if you can get images like this :
Attachment 166162
from a Elite 5 DSI ... which is now a discontinued model, in favor of the Elite series with 2d capabilities  (for whatever reason) .....
what more do you need ?? :dono
Does it really make a $1000-$2000 difference, just to be able to count the number of spines on the fish on your Down Image screen .... or have a pretty finger paint collage of colors (2d) that you need to compare to the DI in order to know what it's showing you ... or have multicolored fish symbols with their "depth" out to the side (when it's not really the depth of the images that's showing, but how far away from the transducer they are  ) ???

Clarify,
Is this pic from an elite 5 dsi?
Yes, Brett ... it's a screen shot from my Lowrance Elite 5 DSI/Chartplotter unit. The same model that Lowrance discontinued, in favor of the Elite HDI series, so that all the "old school" players could have their 2d sonar screen back :banghead (Elite 5 DSI units were DI only, no 2d sonar).
I just find it amusing that the "latest/greatest" hype is over a process that enhances 2d images ... when most of the discussion I've read has been about how the DI images help the user to interpret what the 2d image actually is  ... To my way of thinking, CHIRP is retro & out of place/sync with the progression of depth/fish finder imaging. :dono maybe I'm off base on that, but it just seems like the mfg's looped back into the past (2d imaging) and made it better AFTER they'd already created a better imaging system (DI/SI). I just can't figure out why everyone thinks that's such a cool deal :scratchhead

I think the manufacturers are chasing $$...anywhere they think there might be $$...
Whether it be old technologies, new technologies....or old technologies in new applications....
Each technology has it's very own niche for certain market bases...and some (fortunately)...cross over into several market bases....
Some technologies even have no useful place in certain market bases...but conversely, can be the number one used tool in a completely different market base....
We tend to think in the small realm of pan fishing...
The Brand's "decision makers" think in the realm of every water borne vessel on the planet...and where those $$ are capture-able....
Rickie
well,
when i got a good down image unit, i stopped using the 2d almost all the time,
but if a 2d worked better for my particular situation, i'd use that.
thanks for the reply.
Now that I trust the DI Inrarely use 2d anymore. Occasionally when I am split screen with the SI, 2d gets thrown up on the other screen. I will say the DI on my Lowrance kicks the **** out of the Humminbird it replaced.
Zummy, pics please,like to compare
Genec, for me, it's hard to compare. Lowrance I could see trees and fish, the bird showed a blob on the bottom.
Heres some di shots from my humminbirds.there not of the same structure so its still not a good comparison, but its the best I can come up with.the dedicated di does way outperform the di/from si,but just like crappiepappy stated.even the cheapest units with a dedicated di with perform enough for most people. First picture is the 597,second picture is the 998,third picture is the 998,with the transducer rotated, then the last picture is from the onix
The onix is about as good as it going to get, great pic
Ive been looking through some of my pictures and I found three pictures of the same structure.the first two are the 998 and the 360 in di/si mold, using the 998 and the third is the same using the onixhttp://i826.photobucket.com/albums/z...psbb319060.pnghttp://i826.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps77da99b6.pnghttp://i826.photobucket.com/albums/z...psf3um2uyv.jpg
Kosmo, those are great shots on the ONIX...:highfive
This is probably my best DI shot on my HDS 7 Touch. A 5 post dock with drain pipe(with holes) and Christmas trees. It does not look as good as some I have seen on Gene's HB 998

In an effort to add "worth" to this post, I present some pics
pics from hds 9 touch, various SI and down images with a few sonar (2d)
Garmin pics refuse to load, I'll try and save as a different suffix
