Yes...just slide the small chrome button on the left side of the reel.....that turns the bait click off
What G said... Its easy to hit
Thanks guys, I knew I had to be over looking something.
They will still have a slight clicking sound when reeling. If the clicker is on, it will sound like a coffee grinder.
What is the function of the bait click? Even when off the clicking is plainly audible and I am deaf. Well my wife claims I am.
When my button is up I hear nothing. Line spools out freely
Mine too Wilbur
I just got 4 new ones and they click all the time now. When the button on the side is in the up position, it's a small click. When letting out line it doesn't click. When it's down, it's a loud click.
I would think it is the anti-reverse pawl. Some reels they do not have a "silent" anti reverse bearing, rather they have a ratchet pawl that clicks against one of the large drive gears, very similar to the locking pawl on your boat wench.
You can disengage the anti reverse and the spool will spin backwards to feed out line and the clicking should disappear when you reel in(or be very faint).
I have 4 Ultra light Okumas and one of them has started clicking when I reel in line. I have had it apart 3 times and I can't figure out why it clicks when the others don't.
A guide I hybrid-stripper fished with once used them. We were using 5 or 6" shad. He told us not to set the hook until it started moving the second time. The clicking let you know when the fish was taking line. We still missed several but also caught some really nice ones. He said the strippers would hit the bait to kill it before taking the whole bait into their mouths.
The clickers also make it easier to set planer boards out. You can set the clicker and set them with an open bail which lets you set another one without having to thumb the line.
