This is an image from my Humminbird 899. I can see what I would think would be a ball of shad under my boat with what I thot was crappie off to the right of the boat approx 37ft. I shut the motor down and started fishing over them and quickly found out they were white bass, and man was it fun for about a half hour! My question is... How do I determine what kind of fish im looking at when I find em on my graph? And also, what does crappie look like on these things???!!!
You can't tell species of fish but depth , spacing , and size can give you a clue sometimes. I saw a school of fish on my down image last week and looked like big black slashes all over screen in deep water. Did not take long to find out it was a school of Stripers! With a jig pole in each hand and Striper on both can get interesting or exciting to say the least.:Rofl
There's a setting to make bass green, crappie white, stripers blue, and carp yellow, I think.
P.S. How would I know what a crappie looks like, wet or dry???? rotfl
Hahahaha I bet it does!!!! I love to catch crappie, but any nibble gets me excited! So bring it on stripers!
Crappie and White Bass look a lot alike on si. If you have your sensitivity and contrast set right, the shadow will often tell you more than the white spots. Crappie tend to be more football shaped, whereas White Bass are thinner(not as tall,) and slightly more elongated, as you can see on your screen shot. When you are unsure, do exactly what you did, mark em and drop a jig in their house. Shouldnt take long to figure out what they are. The longer the mark, the bigger the fish. What you are seeing also depends on which way they are facing. You will get the best view if they are facing parallel to the boat. With time and experience, you will be able to identify them pretty quickly.
When I first started out with my 898 it was overwhelming Nimrod & Cmj gave good advice the more time you spend with it the easier it gets.

Excellent picture and good job seeing and catching the fish in it. Just a little reminder that the first fish showing at the line labled 37 are actually only 27 feet away. You will need to subtract the depth of the water to pinpoint them. The deeper the water, the greater the error will be. There is no doubt you knew exactly where they were:ThumbsUpQuote:

I wouldn't think the error would be 10'. Maybe wrong though! Maybe I'm not sure I understand how SI works.
I got 32.25. At that range, you lose approximately half of the depth :dono
Not sure, and also that math is only accurate if they're on the bottom!! Precisely why I stick to my Lowrance x135.

Chris, correct me if I'm wrong, but the way this was explained to me, you would lose half your depth plus half your boat width?? That may be the wrong calculation, but for the way it was explained the math worked on the example I saw.
I've never seen one of these units working on the water so you could tell me if you turn it on the sky will fall and I wouldn't know the difference.
Maybe this will help or just confuse but I will give it a try. We are not actually talking about error but subtracting the water column. The measurement starts from the center of the transducer/boat so you have to subtract that to get your actual feet.

Im probably not explaining it as good as the guys from hb, but this is what they have said the last 2 years at the jig show.
Michael is exactly right. All the water column shows flat and it makes your lines read wrong. If you are looking at your sonar in deepview on a pc. The coordinates will not change until you get outside of the water column. The wide dark spot will have the same coordinates from edge to edge.

When u scroll over to mark them it tells exactly how many feet they are from the transducer or my 998 does

Well that cleared up a lot for me. I just assumed the black under the boat is a cone that side image wouldn't read. For some reason I thought if you were in 20' of water the black area was 20' wide of water not on the screen. So where the image starts is what's under the boat on left and right side?Quote:
