If you are talking about long-lining, it has been around for a couple of decades, but like everything else, it is always improving. There are some guys on here that are really good at it that will be glad to help.
Not sure exactly what's it called. May be long lining. Saw a post last week from Kenyon and he referred to it as a new technique for him. Thant's why I thought it might be something totally new.
Kinda like pulling crankbaits except using jigs! !!!!
Very similar to the old obsolete term "Trolling"..........
:fish
What you want to know? I've done it a time or two.
Throw out jig as far as you can cast on a really good casting day. Drive fast. Reel in fish. So easy even a caveman could do it. (give Wayne a big holla he be da man)
It's like pulling cranks you just go slower. to adjust your depth pulling cranks you use your amount of line out with jigs you control your depth with your speed. As RCC said make a long cast behind the boat, an 1/8 oz jig will go about 8 feet deep going 1 mph. I put my longest rods(18') to the front of the boat next is a 14' next is a 10 on each side. Then I run 6-5'er across the back for a total of 12. Hi vis line helps alot keeping your lines untangled when reeling in a fish. May sure to keep line tight when picking rod out of holder, that is where my customers lose most of their fish.
Thanks Hudnut for asking the question. Thanks Wayne or answering. That info will help me. To be completely honest, I've done it a few times, but have no clue why I caught, or did not catch.
I can see why it is referred to as the old trolling way.
It's kinda the same but with a more specific technique.
Thanks Wayne for the info
Trolling depth depends on several factors. Weight and type of jig. The weight line (diameter of line) and speed trolled. I know some old timers that long lined here and got them using Southern pro Umbrellas with 1/8 inserted jighead and pulled them with 10lb test line. My recommendation is make sure and carry a gps to maintain proper speed when ya find out what works where your fishing. I'm sure most of those guys that troll will agree with most of this.:twocents
I've seen folks troll just about everything from Rattle traps , Bandits, hand tied jigs like MEATGETTER 's Spanky , Tube jigs , Roadrunners and with proper technique most caught fish.
I just estimate the depth by the angle the line takes into the water at your desired speed. For instance, if you are fishing 10 foot forward from the back of boat and your line enters the water at the back when you hold your tip 4 foot above the water, then a 30 ft. cast will put you around 8' to 12' down depending on how low you move your tip. Close enough, as long as you can hold speed. :scratchhead
Lol yup Wayne don't make it too easy. I have been playing every trip I make ad the pieces are falling together and fish are In da boat lol.
I have a little different method than Creek's. My nerves will only take four poles at a time. I use my shortest ones up front with an egg sinker before a 3' leader. Because....I kept getting them tangled in the big motor prop. I only let out about 20' of line on these. The two rear ones, I cast out as far as I can. Makes it interesting. Sometimes I only catch fish on the front ones. DP
