I would always choose a spinning reel over an underspin. In terms of quality, there is no comparison.
I'm like D4D, no comparing the quality even though I own a couple. Best thing about them I can think of is they are good to teach new fishers how to use a spinning reel when they first start.

Then there is the "sometimes" issue where wind can blow line off the open spool of a spinning reel. I also find it easier to "shoot" with an underspin like the old Zebco UL series.
I tried some for spider rigging and had a heck of a time. I would accidently hit the trigger when I grabbed the rod to set the hook.Quote:

Yeah, I liked the Zebco UL's, but about one season was all they were good for-same with their ultralite spincasters. For beginners and for infrequent use they are great.
underspins once you put line on them you fish with that line 4,6,8 lb. A Spinning reel allows you to carry (extra spools) for whatever the situation calls for clear mono in clear water,braid for heavy cover ect!! lots of option's for spinning!!If line gets low change to spare spool on spinning!!!

Oh and I agree that you should just buy a Pflueger President. Not the Spincadt as that's still too new. I have maybe six President reels and I'm always looking for more. Need another 25XT, 30XT, and maybe a couple 20s. But even the Trions and Echeclons (pretty cheap on eBay) will do better than most spincast and just about all of those under spin reels.

Onto the spinning reels I'm looking at two of them the Abu Garcia Cardinal SX20 and the Pflueger President. What size President do y'all use "assuming they come in different sizes"?
You see a lot of presidents in 35 size reels but I found the 30 to be a good general purpose size. I actually use my 25 and 20 more than any of the other size reels. The 25 I use for casting bobbers with a jig and the 20 is on a 12' rod for jigging.
I'd recommend the 30 if you aren't sure or only plan to have one reel for most of your fishing. If its just crappie and panfish you are after the 25 does just fine getting them to grease. A decent rod and some good line will balance everything and give you a good setup.
I agree with staying away from the underspin designs. None of them have as good a reputation as open face designs. I have nothing to back it up with, but I'd certainly challenge the open face design creating "UV deterioration" problems. Been using spinning reels for over 40 years and have yet to experience any significant evidence of that being a serious factor. I think this is purely subjective and not born out in fact. However, I could be wrong. It certainly wouldn't sway me toward the underspin design.
Finally, if you are looking at a good open face, I can vouch for the Cardinal 100 series - I have had 2 in service for 3 seasons now. Inexpensive, almost bullet proof and a great drag system. Inexpensive too. Just not sure if they are still making them or not?
But, right now Cabelas is having a great sale on the Pflueger Summit reel line. A $60.00 reel selling for just under $40.00. I'm mainly a Shimano fan, but I'm going to give one a shot - after Father's Day! ;)
UL rods 4'-5'6 use a size 20
6'-7' use a size 25 or 30.
Weight is a big factor unless you are going to bobber fish all day, so get the lightest reel that will still balance the rod.
