Yo-Yo's....Like or Dislike???

I know this has come up before but do the Yo-Yo fisherman take more than they should and hurt a lakes population?? I compare it to trot lining a lot and even though I don't Yo-Yo fish I do like to trot line when I get the chance. Me and a buddy were talking this morning and both agreed the way we trot line, only about twice a year when we have time, it probably won't make a much difference but there are those who really take a lot of fish out of the lakes and rivers by setting lines and Yo-Yo's. I mean how much can a fishery take?? I've yet to set line this year and my love for the Flathead catfish is about to drive me crazy wanting to set some but working around my schedule makes it tough. I have a bass tournament coming up I always fish and then I plan on focusing on crappie more but hope to mix in setting some lines then as well. Where we live there are a lot of retired folks who move in and line an awful lot. I enjoy it myself but wanna ensure our fishery's aren't hurt, what yall think?

I first saw this type fishing when I visited ARK the first time. Doesnt seem very exciting to me and reminds me of running a trap line. It deffinetly is meat hunting and not sport.

I hate em!!! I think we should all carry bazookas in our boat at all times and blow em all to pieces.................Yep, cut em, burn em, and impose the death penalty to anyone caught using them!!!

I feel if used right it is OK but few do. Would like to see live bait for game fish on them banned and used only for Catfishing. I have used them but not anymore. Good way for folks just to load a freezer but truthfully cheaper just to buy their fish.

Never used a yoyo, but I do like to run a trot line one weekend a year or so. Nothing like grabbing that line and feeling them cats tugging. Don't like it when folks abandon them. I hate thinking ya got a crappie then realizing ya got someone's old line! Take em up guys!

I use them a few times a year for crappie. I dont have a problem with them any more than I do any other type of LEGAL fishing methods, but, like any other fishing methods there are those that abuse the system. I dont think most yo yo fishermen take more than they should. Whats the defination of "should"? More than you can eat? A limit is a limit no mater the style of fishing. I'd be willing to bet Nimrod and some others on here catch more crappie single polling in a month than I take all year.

I'd like to know how many poeple are capable of catching 10-20 crappie on most of the trips they take on a rod and reel, but prefer to run yoyo's? I'd bet not many. I have a lot of good memories of camping at greens lake years ago and catching 50 crappie all weekend. At the time thats the only place, and method I knew how to catch enough fish for a few messes. I never left one unless it broke a limb off or Iijust couldn't find it, which was very rare. That being said I haven't hung a yoyo in years but I still have them and think about running them every once in a while. I'd hate to see them outlawed, I may get around to running them again some day.

I use them, but I am also legal.

If you are not labeled, and within eye sight during daylight hours, you my friend are not legal and deserve to have all your yo-yo's taken.

I agree 100%. But when you are on the water looking at that unmarked yo-yo with the dead 2lber hanging off of it, decide then which one you are going to do: cut it, or report it. Definitely dont do both, or you are likely to get a surprise when you hand that yo-yo to the warden and tell him you cut it. Just sayin.

I don't have a problem with any type of legal fishing. As long as one goes by the letter of the law, it's not up to me to judge. Nor is it up to any body else.

Let's all go hang some yo yos and sit around a fire and drink whisky and beat this dead horse. ;)

Didn't wanna start a fight, but I'm seeing a few opinions coming out on this and we all should have our opinions. Here's a solution, lets just get the G&FC to stock more crappie and it won't matter? They really hit our lakes hard. While on Dequeen lake this spring I seen several newly made 2x2 boards with like 4 pegs to hang for Yo-Yo's on. If added up they ain't no telling how many they screw gunned into the timber in East and West Cedar coves. I couldn't help but think how many crappie were taken out because of them. I seen a ton of them on Pine Creek lake and Gillham lake as well. I'm sure they hit all the lakes with them just as hard. Dequeen lake for instance has most of the lakes main lake brush in East and West Cedar coves so it would be easy to hit em hard by just hanging in those coves alone. Most all my brush is out in open water because of that reason on Dequeen lake. I just keep saying we need more stocking where it won't matter.

Oh no here we go again. As long as they are used properly I do not have a problem with them. Most people I know including myself got their start crappie fishing by running yoyos. I havent touched one in 4 or 5 years, but I would hate to know someone would try to take that option away. When I fished with them there were older guys saying that it was not really fishing then I quit using them and started trolling. Guess what I caught grief for that. So I say fish with what you want to as long as you follow the rules and enjoy doing it. I hope this is the last time we have to beat this horse, but give it a couple weeks and we can do this all over again.

If its the number of crappie taken out of a lake due to yo-yo's is your argument, then the AR river and Nimrod should be crappie free by now. Just go back and look at the limits that folks are catching, almost daily with single poles and spidering, and then how many people are pulling limits with yo-yo's (not necessarily posted on here). I bet folks pull more out with poles than with yo-yo's. Yo-yo people are usually only out a short period of the year.

But they're catching our fish!!!! And they aren't doing it right. I caught a thousand out of one treetop but would have caught more if the yo-yo fishermen hadn't caught those that they poached.

Nimrod is now free of crappie. there is NO reason for anyone to go back there. C.A. should move, tomorrow. Rest of you, go somewhere else. Besides, it's flooded and won't be fishable for weeks. So go away. OK?

Years ago Yo-Yo's cost about $9.95 a dozen. I saw them at Wal-Mart the other day for $3.47 EACH. Can anyone afford to leave them on a tree when they are through fishing????

I have 5 dozen that I paid $1.00 a dozen for right after Lee surrendered.

I love em, just hang 60 off the sides of my boat as I spider 30 poles across the lake. I call it the seine!!

But the yoyos baited with minnows take alot of the biggest. I remember old timers trotlinng for Crappie back in the 70's in the backwaters. They actually sold slabs (illegal but went on )and man it was unreal how many they hauled out! There would be lots fewer yoyo fishermen if they had to follow the regulations!:twocents

Make them self-enforcing by declaring them public property if hanging between 30 minutes before and after sundown/sunup. My gripe at Conway is some that live up there leave their yoyos out for for weeks making it difficult and dangerous to pole fish in the cypress trees with hooks hanging everywhere. I always considered yoyos a night time sport anyway.

To some degree, that was me. I ran a ton of yo-yo's in the Plumerville Cutoff.....back when it was lined with big trees. We tied ropes between the trees and hung the yo yo's off of the ropes. After a couple of years of that, we found out it was illegal! We also shot frogs in a pond offshore there, and found out THAT was illegal. We stopped when we found out. We were maybe 25-30 years old (Lincoln was running for President, and the Dead Sea had just started to get sick) and we'd bass fish till dark, then run yo-yo's till dawn.

We did NOT haul out "tons" of crappie. We caught mostly catfish. But we caught a few crappie.

I can't even imagine leaving those yo-yo's out there when I left. They were too expensive to do that! Plus it'd be stupid. I never did that, not once. They are still in the shop, with hooks stuck in the styrofoam bucket.

And I'd go again in a heartbeat.........and do it legal.........IF I could stay awake that long, which I can't! :)

I repeat- Im so glad im not the only crazy person on this board! One night in November years ago Rookie and me were running yo yos and I fell out of the boat with the spotlight in my hand. Being to drunk to swim I DoD an underwater flip jumped back in the boat with the spotlight still burning bright! When we stopped laughing 10 min later Rookie said - I got one question dog- DID YOU SEE ANY FISH?

True story and I have never laughed that hard in my life. Some of the best times of my life were had while running yo yos.
